My name is Greg Talbot here standing by for our pregame interview alongside the head athletic director at Mead here, John Barrington, as we get ready to kick off Mead and Ferris to start the 2021 GSL season.

John, of course, both teams tonight have new coaches. Keith Stamps here for your Mead Panthers. What was it about him that let you know that he was your guy? Well, you know, I know he wanted to be basically come back home. You know, when we interviewed him, he was really excited about that opportunity giving back to a school that he graduated from.

He was on my first year coaching. He was a senior on that football team and got into coaching right out of when he was done playing at Idaho. Been at Deer park and been extremely successful. And we're lucky to have him and talk to him a little bit, just, you know, just a few minutes ago. And he's excited, he's nervous, but he's glad to be home.

1998, meet grad. That's what we said. That's what he said this week when he talked to him. He's happy to be coming home, obviously. Great to have fall football back after a spring season last year.

How was the lead up to this season organizationally for the gsl? Because I know that you are the schedule coordinator. Right, right. Well, the schedules the last few years in the Greater Spokane League, regarding football, it's been tricky with all the changes in our league. The, the school's dropping to 2A and the 3A 4A splits and we've been involved with the MCC and now the big nine in our non leagues and so just a lot of change and really kind of hard to pin down.

But now we've got one on paper and you know, we're looking forward to playing it. And John, finally, how great is it to finally be playing fall football in this beautiful new Union Stadium? Because it's been up for a while. We just haven't had fall football. Right, Right.

For some reason it sounds different to me playing out here in September than it did in March and April. So it's. Yeah, it's quite the buzz. The Ferris Band is here, so all those football sounds that we're used to in the fall, we're looking forward to it. It is great to have people in the stands.

Football is finally back for real in 2021. How good does that feel to say? This is the Arby's GSL Game of the Week on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM. We're kicking off the brand new season tonight with the Ferris Saxons and the Mead Panthers alongside the great Paul Sorensen with Steve the Wingman Pry back in the studio.

My name is Greg Talbot and it is our pleasure to welcome you to week one of our GSL radio broadcast this season. Well, you might be wondering what this fall football season is going to look like considering we haven't really had one this properly in two years. So let's lay it out. The GSL teams are going to play about nine games. The WIAA is still definitely planning on having playoffs and championships, unlike the shortened season we had last spring.

So all that out of the way, let's set the stage for week one here. Two teams with a whole bunch of changes. Both Ferris and Mead with new head coaches that are given the program's new identities. But both of these men who got hired are familiar faces. Mead, for their part, made a great hire.

They brought down the Keith Stamps, who had a very successful career as the head coach of Deer park for 16 seasons. Paul, he created a stable winning program up there. He's a Mead graduate, class of 98. They're counting on him to do the same thing here long term. Well, and I think he's got a.

He's got a vision that's more than just three weeks down the season. He's looking at building the program. And one thing Mead has always had, you go back to the grid kids program many, many years ago. Fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade, they've Always had great numbers. He wants to maintain those numbers.

There seem to have been a kind of a drop off from eighth grade into that freshman class and then taking those freshmen and working their way up. So by the time they're seniors, they're ready to go. And the coaching hire at Ferris was probably the biggest splash in the GSL this offseason. They promoted defensive coordinator Malik Roberson to the main job. This is something they've had in the works for a while.

The school hired him as a counselor in 2018. They made him the defensive coordinator and now he's taking the reins after the spring season. But there are two things that make him an important figure. Number one, he played college ball at Central and Wazoo. Then he was an assistant at both of those schools, plus Eastern and Portland State.

And number two, he's the first African American head coach in Spokane history. Ferris Paul is beyond lucky to have him. Well, I coached him. I was very fortunate to coach him at Lewis and Clark. And he's one of my favorite players.

I mean, heck, his last job before he went to Ferris was defensive coordinator for the, you know, Portland State Vikings. So he's been at the Division 1 level. He's, he's been an assistant coach at D. C. you know, and I love the fact, you know, from him, he doesn't care about color of skin or race, creed, any of that kind of stuff.

It's all about developing good people. It's making them better. And he comes under the auspices of John Hook, who was his coach at Lewis and Clark, who was a big mentor, you know, for him along with Tom Year out and Dario Mero who recently left Ferris and he's now coaching up at Lewis and Clark.

Well, Mead went 4 and 3 in the spring. Ferris went 2 and 5. They are both counting on having turnaround, bounce back breakout years in 2021. We'll take a quick break, then back with the Arby's GSL Game of the Week on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM.

Onward Crimson Soldiers. Welcome back to Union Stadium. A little GSO football action on Friday night. Greg, it's great to have you in the booth. But we're going to have ourselves a heck of a ballgame and two programs, you know, if you, as you mentioned Greg, that are dealing with new head coaches but have been around a long time and it's kind of a plug and play situation for both these teams. Well and truly, Paul, when you think about teams that have new head coaches, the kind of thought that goes along with that right at the start of the new season is people getting their sea legs under them.

People people being kind of unsure. I don't think that's really true about either of these teams. Mead or Ferris These coaches have been around. These coaches are well known. The kids are excited to play.

For these coaches, I think it's optimism versus nerves to start the season well. And I just think all of the things that these kids and coaches and fans and supporters, administrators and there's been a lot of turnover in the Greater Spokane league. John Barrington's one of three of the original kind of GSLADs. You know, there's been a ton of turnover on your principal side, your athletic director side, your teacher side. Covid wore a lot of people out.

And for these teams to have to play in the spring, they were able to at least get seven games in, but then turn right around now and have to come back. That's tough on the body. And I think you're gonna see, you know, some wear and tear, you know, on these kids as the season goes on. But the fact that they can play in the fall, the fact that they're playing each other here on a Friday night, you know, is really a good thing and a promising thing. And you're starting to.

And they're doing it front of fans. So that's the part that makes it really well. That's the biggest thing. You and I actually broadcast a meet against Ferris game this last spring, Paul, and it was nice to have some people in the stands. It was nice to have live football.

It wasn't quite the same though, was it? These kids have had a couple weeks to get going for fall camp. They were back in school this week for the Greater Spokane League. It's phenomenal. We got people in the stands tonight.

Beautiful night out here at the View. A beautiful new Union Stadium. This feels like something we haven't had in about two years. It is and it was fun because Larry and I got back from, from Las Vegas this morning at 4:30 and that. That was a nice nap, by the way.

And then had to go in the office and so forth, but they had a bunch of fans, you know, down in New Allegiant Stadium down there with it. I say the Oakland Raiders because they were my team when they were in Oakland. Then they moved la, then back to Oakland. Now they moved to Las Vegas. But that facility down there is unbelievable.

And the lower bowl was full and it was louder than heck and it was, was so cool. And you could tell the athletes really responded to that. Having people out there. Well, let's talk a little bit about Keys to the Game. Kind of an interesting deal.

Ferris has got some really darn good explosive players. Anthony Aguirre is the second team all All GSL player last year on offense, a wide receiver, a senior. The young man's going to come in and do some great stuff. They also have an excellent quarterback and Paxton Page, big strong kid. It transferred in from the Oregon coast.

You know Cruz Wheeler who was a sophomore last year who got some all league honors at running back. But the big stud was Jade Jaden Ola Joe Egbe and we have not seen him tonight. You talked to Malik Robertson? He didn't mention him during, during his conversation. I've been looking for number three out on the the field.

There he is. He's in. He's not suited up. So I don't know if he's dealing with an injury right now. He's.

He's playing catch over there. So unfortunately that will be a big loss. That was one of our keys is that get the ball to him. But if he's sitting on street clothes on the sidelines, that's going to make it problematic for Ferris. Yeah, that's absolutely true.

JD Ola Joyegbi not only a first team all GSL receiver. Paul offered a Montana Western 6 foot 4 wide receiver. Not a lot of DBs in the Greater Spokane League that can beat a guy like that and go up and get him passes. Good news for Ferris. When you look at the rest of their receiving corps, they do have another true stud.

And Anthony Aguirre, he's actually bigger than g day. He's 6 foot 5 offered by Idaho. He's going to be the feature target for them tonight. I agree with that and I think and as a senior he's going to give you some leadership as well. And I love the fact that you're starting to see a lot of these players get offers.

And that was the other thing from the college standpoint is you had a lot of players that did not. You know, you've basically been squeezed because Covid gave seniors and players extra years at the college level. What does that do? That hurts the high school level from that standpoint. So Farris and I know Malik is.

He's a grind. He's going to pound you. He's going to play action. Yeah, he's going to throw the ball down the field, but he's going to rely on defense and good special teams. And I think this is going to be a work in progress for Ferris, for Meade.

On the other side, their strength really is their line. They're big and strong. They've got some honor candidates coming back, you know, on that front and I think that's going to Be the matchup. You know I think on a skill position standpoint I think Ferris has got some great skilled people, you know, all over the place at wide receiver, tight end, quarterback and running back. But can they hold up?

Mead is very good up front. I think that's where they're going to cause some problems. Yeah, especially if you're thinking about the Ferris offense line. They're not necessarily small but when you look at the Mead defensive front you got, you compare them to me. Yeah.

You got Chris Prince second team all league he's offered by Whitworth. And then Spencer lineman who is first team all league lineman last year also offered by Whitworth. Those guys are two of the four up front. Yeah and they're big and they're strong and they're college bound which makes it, makes it really interesting. So now you've got a new head coach, you know, coming in and Keith Stamp he's going to take advantage of.

They're going to run the football. I think you're going to see a lot of it between tackles he'll set up play action, pass. You know they're going to try to control the clock, control the tempo and turnovers are always a key. Who wins the turnover battle, who wins a field position battle, who wins the red zone battle. Those are going to things that are going to decide this football game.

Yes. So Mead certainly better up front. Ferris tends to have more returning skill guys so that should make for an interesting mismatch battle tonight. We're going to take a quick break here. The RB's GSL game of the week on 700 ESPN and 105.

Let's go ahead and take a look at our starting lineups tonight. Now, in case you weren't with us for the top of the pregame show, we were joined by Mead's athletic director, John Barrington. He made a note of the fact that because the GSL is kind of all out of sorts with their stadiums this year, despite the fact that this is Mead's home stadium, they are technically the team tonight.

It is what it is. It's still weird times. Let's go ahead and take a look. Paula, their starting lineup. Let's start with their O line.

Jacob Gatlin, Spencer Lyman, Sebastian Montaut, ryan Beasley and J. T. o'. Connors. Skyler Harkness is one of their two running backs.

He'll line up in the backfield, along with Declan Alganinja at wideout, we have Max Workman and Nolan Braun. Preston Egan also working in the slot. And then their quarterback who transferred over from Mount Spokane, Colby Danielson. Yeah, no, he's a good little player. I like him.

And I think he's going to add a dimension that's dynamic, you know, for this ME team. And again, the offensive line and the defensive line, in my opinion, are really the strength of this program. They're big, they're strong, they're going to be physical. If Keith Stamp will take advantage of that, the new head coach there for the Panthers, and. And try to basically, you know, ground and pound you a little bit.

And if you can't stop the run, why would you stop running? Bingo. All right, let's keep take a look at the Panthers defense here. Chris Prince on the line along with J. T.

connors, Jacob Gaitlin, Spencer. Lineman linebacking corps, Chris Gross, Skyler Harkness, first team all league last year. And Becca Montez. And the DBs, Nolan Braun, Preston Egan, John Hartman and Colby Thomas. You are not kidding, Paul.

Those are some big boys they got up front. They do, and I think that's going to cause fair some problems because they're not. They're not big. They're going to probably have to roll their quarterback out, get out on the edge and try to create some advantages that way, or use the quick passing attack. And now let's take a look at the starting lineup for technically the home team that I know, although they're quite a ways from their home on the south hill that is.

The Ferris Saxons into their first year. New head coach Malik Roberson, who Paul has coached before. All right, take a look at their starting offense with the O line. Josh Beanie, Hayden, wine claw, Dylan McCain, O' Jalin Jones. And give me a second with this one.

Elon Supkowiak. Wide receivers Anthony Aguirre, Johnny Talarico, both of whom we saw last year, along with Keoni Lindsey. He'll be lining up at wideout and running back for them tonight. Brody hall is starting at tight end, second team all league. Running back Cruz Wheeler lining up in the backfield and returning quarterback, the senior this time around, Paul Paxton Page.

And Paxton Page has got a great release. He was a transfer from the Oregon coast, came in in the spring and I thought really did a nice job. He had a little tendency sometimes to force the football, but when you give him time, he's explosive, and that's going to be the Key tonight. Yeah, he had some developing to do, but when you and I saw him last year, we thought he has the tools. I agree, I agree.

And he stands in there and does a nice job. And you know, one thing I know about Malik and his, his acumen is this is a team that's going to play hard. They're going to be well coached. They may be, they may be at a disadvantage physically in some areas, but it's not going to be an effort issue. They're going to play hard and they're going to, they're going to compete and they're going to come out wacky in the mouth.

And that's the one thing that you can guarantee with a Malik Robertson head coaching, you know, job in terms of what they're able to do. It's just too bad one of their big playmakers is not going to be on the field. All right, let's take a look at their starting defense tonight. On the line, Davion Walter, Hayden Crumley, Josh Beanie and Roderick Bird. Taking a look at the linebacking core, couple names we recognize, including Cruz Wheeler, Brody hall and Carson Lucas.

And then we have safeties and corners. Keoni Lindsay, Luke Nice, Khalil Lindsay and Johnny Talarico. One of the wide receivers, they got a couple two way players. Well, they have to. Ferris has always done that.

They've always had to kind of go. And lc back in the day, we used to play, you know, our best athletes both ways as well. And so you're going to, you're going to have to, you know, kind of rely on that. And early in the season you're going to have some physical conditioning issues. It takes you a while to get in shape when you play both ways.

You can't go 100% the entire time. You've got to pace yourself a little bit. And, and so when you have a team like Mead with a lot more numbers, you're going to have more guys playing, which can keep them fresh. And really quickly, Paul, before we toss it to break here before kickoff, which is about seven minutes away here on 700 ESPN, where do we think these teams are going to kind of end up around the middle or end of the GSL season or, or is it all too different right now?

That there's no way to know? I just can't really tell because we haven't had a chance to kind of compare the teams. Even though you kind of saw what happened last year, you know, your teams were, you know, Mount Spokane, you know, was outstanding on the 3A level. Gonzaga Prep was, was nails, you know, on the 3A 4A level as well. Central Valley was good.

These two teams, you know, struggled a little bit last year I think and, and I think they might struggle a little bit this year. But I think you're going to see them in prove as the year goes on because now you've got a regular schedule where you're going to play, you know, your 9 3A 4A, you know, games and I think that that makes a difference. Well, the Mead Panthers in their white uniforms and white helmets are lining up on the left side of the field. They are just about ready to put up the sign and run through it that the cheerleaders are holding. Awesome stuff. Yeah Paul, you and Larry have been so good to me over the years. So happy to be joining the team. And boy, you and Larry got a workout in last night with that eastern game, huh? Yeah, that was, that was a lot of fun.

And even when you got a little excited in the booth from time to time, which is, which is always a neat thing but they were able to come through. They should have blown, I thought they should have beat him by, you know, a lot more. They left a lot of points on there but who cares? They came home with a win. It was over an FPS opponent, first one since 2016.

All right, the Mead Panthers on the left side of your radio dial tonight wearing white helmets and white jerseys with blue numbers. They're about to do the Papa Murphy's kickoff to start this game change the way you pizza back to receive for Ferris in their red jerseys, Cruz Wheeler and Johnny Tallarico. It's going to be a deep kick down the right side into the back of the Ferris end zone. That'll roll out. They will take with good field position to start the 2021 high school football season under Malik Roberson in his first year.

You know Paul, we talked to him at the start of this week. He says he's going to bring more of a pistol based offense to the South Hill well and that's that. That gives you an RPO RPO option which, which will loosen some things up. But you've got a very stout front seven for me so I think you'll see Ferris tighten their split second down and if they do pass you're going to see a quick kind of one and three step passing attack. Get rid of the football quickly.

All right. And Ferris Starts on the right side of your radio dial in their silver helmets and red jerseys from their own 20 yard line. Four down lineman for me to three linebackers. And this will start off the 2021 GSL football season. Paxton Page, the quarterback takes a high snap, fakes a handoff, goes along the right side and he is a met by the defense along the line of scrimmage.

You were right, Paul. They started off with an rpo, it just didn't go anywhere. Loss of one. Well, that's just it because they couldn't get create any holes there. So that's, that's a tough part when you want to run the ball and your quarterback doesn't hand out.

I saw the running back and he got buried as well right at the line of scrimmage. So nice job by that Mead. Front four linebackers did an excellent job of scraping. Came over there and knocked, you know, knocked Page down. Paxton Page, a pretty big guy, six foot, 290 pounds, a senior.

He has a college offer so far to Montana Western. They're counting on a couple more coming up later this fall. Two receivers to his left, one to his right. And Cruise Wheeler, the second team all league running back with him there in the backfield. And the referees blow the play dead.

Let's hear what they say. Which reminds me, there's a shortage for officials as well. In fact there's going to be. There were a couple games canceled, you know, tonight because of COVID situation which actually I think played into, into the officiating strike because I don't think they had enough guys to cover all the games.

So that's something that every sport is having to deal with and they're going to. Looks like a delay. Oh, he had a false start. Okay, so. So anyway, you know, just a little appeal out there.

I've been a basketball and baseball official for many, many years. If you get, you want to get yelled at, you want to come out, have some fun and run around a little bit, make a little bit of money. It's a great way to do it and help the kids. All right, so Ferris moving backwards here after the penalty. Second down and 17.

They take it now from inside their own 15 yard line. Somebody flinched. Two receivers out each way for Paxton. Page comes near side the, completes a pass to Keone Lindsay. He slides down to his knees around the 22 yard line for a moderate gain.

But it's still going to be third down and pretty long. Nice job by Lindsey and you know, that's I think going to be an important Thing I think you're going to have to drop back, step, set that back foot and that football better be coming out quickly, you know, and I think that's going to be the way to go. And that'll set up the defense and for a double move down the road. All right, third down and 12 for Ferris. Paxton Page going to have to show off his arm here.

He's got Brody hall, the tight end and the left side slot. Two receivers out to the right. They're lining up on the left hash mark. Third down and 17. About a minute into this 20, 21 GSL football season.

Third and a long way to go for Ferris. Page drops back, defensive line has already gotten to him. He throws down the field and it's intercepted at the 40 yard line. Mead already got to him. It's hauled in by John Hartman.

He gets all the way back to the right side to the Ferris 25 yard line. And the Mead Panthers pounce ball. Senior did a great job. He read that perfectly. They're running kind of a seam route and he just slid right up underneath the wide receiver.

And that's exactly what Ferris cannot afford is to turn the football over like that. But a great pick by, by Hartman, his first one on the season. Nice job by the senior defensive line didn't even knock any O line guys down. They just got right by him. Well, that's just it, you know, so they're doing a nice job of moving and shifting, you know, up front.

And the offensive line for Ferris is going to have to make that adjustment. They've got a slide protect or man protect, depending on, you know, what works best for them. But that was, that was a tough deal. Good pressure caused that interception. So here comes the meat offense.

For the first time in the 2021 season, they are on the Ferris 25 on the right side of the field. The junior Colby Danielson with his first snap of the season. He turns and hands off to Dakota Hackworth. He powers his way forward on the ground for a gain of about four yards, all the way down to the 20. Me really threatening here right off the top.

Well, you know, the fact from the standpoint that you get an interception, you get it basically it takes you right down, you know, to the 25 yard line. You've got great field position here. You got 10, 15 to go in the first quarter and you know that's, that's a recipe for, for success when you can turn the football over like that. Make a short field and give your offense this opportunity. All right, Colby Danielson like we said a minute ago, in his first year as the quarterback at Meadow, he transferred over from Mount Spokane during the off season.

The coaching staff very high on this kid. Takes the snap on second down and medium turns and hands to Skylar Harkness, one of their two running backs. That's his first carry. He's the more hard nosed downhill runner. He does go downhill for a first down.

Picked up six division. Walter, the defensive end was the young senior who came in there and made the tackle. But that's a first down. Just a great job, you know, from that standpoint and getting that first down. That's an STCU first down or maybe.

Yep, there we go. See, I blew that. Now the right spot. First game, man, first game. Yeah.

Okay, I got to get into midseason form here. My bad. All right, so Mead on the Ferris 15 here with 935 to go in the first quarter. Still no score. High snap here to Daniels.

He turns and hands off to Hackworth and he is met in the backfield. Went absolutely nowhere for the first time in a couple plays. Here comes the Ferris up front. Give the defense credit. They're doing a great job because they had the quick change on the interception and sometimes that, you know, you'll give up a big play because you're kind of down a little bit about the turnover.

But this defense has come out even though they've given up one first down there. They're playing hard here and that was great pursuit and great pressure up the middle to make that play. The Ferris D line and their white and their silver helmets and red jerseys, they are not big but they are tall and they're quick. All right, three receivers to the right side here for Daniels on second down and 11. He'll throw for the first time, drops back, here comes pressure over the middle.

That ball is tipped and knocked away by Cruz Wheeler. Yeah, Cruz did a nice job of reading that and he gets a pass broken up, you know, from that standpoint. Did a nice job of, you know, of reading that route. It was just a drag route across the middle and, and I don't think, you know, I don't think Danielson saw him. He just jumped the route and gets a pass.

Yeah, I saw Cruz reading his eyes, didn't you? Yeah. And he nearly had an interception. He just couldn't get both hands on the football. But he did a nice job of separating the wide receiver from the ball and his body.

So as Danielson marches out back here for a third and 11 for me, he'll be Expected to throw. Coaches said this week he is hyper, coachable, high IQ and picking up this new offense very quickly. He's got three receivers to the right, one to the left. On third and 11 from the Ferris 15, they put Nolan Braun, the slot receiver, in motion. Drop back, throw.

That one's hauled in by Harkness. Down inside the 10. He goes end over end. Got down to about the eight yard line. He's still going to be two yards short for fourth down.

Lindsay did a nice job of coming up from his corner spot and knocking out the legs of the running back. But I think you'll see me go for it here on fourth down. You know, that was a nice job. Just a little safety valve route to the back. Coming out of the backfield, Threw it out there, corner came up, made the tackle.

Nice job in open field. So the junior quarterback, Colby Danielson is going to march out there. There is no kicker on the field. They are at the Ferris 8 yard line. They got to get down to the 5.

They have an eye formation with one receiver out to the far side. And Ferris is stacking the box on defense. Danielson under center. They put a man in motion. Turn and handoff here to Harkness.

He goes off tackle to the left side. He did not get there. Ferris with a big stop on defense. Yeah, that's an excellent job. You know, from that standpoint in terms of that, that defensive stop there, they just overwhelmed the line of scrimmage.

Basically a nice job by the defensive staff because they played gap football that time and lined up enough players in the gap that they overwhelmed me offensively up front. Really had no place to go and they get the ball back. So in my opinion, that's just like a turnover. You get a fourth down stop. So the Saxons have a little bit worse field position.

They started on their 25 the last time. They're on the seven right now. All right, eight minutes to go here in the first quarter. No score between Ferris and me. To the South Hill Saxons here on their own 8 yard line on the right side of the field.

Paxton Page deep out of the shotgun, right around his own goal line. Four receivers, one tight end. He turns and hands off. We have a flag coming out of the backfield. It was a bad snap.

Which was good because basically, you know, Paxton Page had to go down to get that bad snap. And that was something we saw in the spring that was causing some issue with this offense because it messed up their timing. He went to a knee.

Why take the penalty? It goes to second and long now. Second down and 12 for Ferris. Now inside their own five yard line. Anthony Aguirre split out to the far side.

He is their best wide receiver, bar none. Turn and handoff to Cruise Wheeler. He can barely get back to the line of scrimmage. Two big boys on that Mead defensive line. Chris Prince and Spencer Lyman making the stop.

I think you basically have to get outside in these guys. I don't think you're gonna be able to move this big offensive line off the ball. They did get, you know, about a yard and a half on that. But I think you gotta attack this Mead Panther defense to the wings. You know, throw quick slants, curls, hitches, get your back out of the backfield, that kind of stuff.

Well, now on third down and man 11 to go from inside their own 10, Paxton Page has to be careful. Last time he was out here he threw an intercept. Yeah, he threw an interception. So he's got to be careful here. No matter what, don't throw a pick and get this pass off.

In the spring, he also had a safety where the ball was snapped kind of over his head. He had to go recover it and that, that didn't go well. And that was, that was really just a safe play to try to get up there. Now you got to punt the ball. You wanted to try to get a little bit more yards than this because now your punt team's going to have to come in.

But the defense dodged a bullet. Big turnover, Nice interception, you know, from that standpoint by, by John Hartman. But now they're going to punt the ball away and Mead's going to get good field position. And they handed it off the Cruise. Wheeler got absolutely nowhere.

You were right about all this, Paul, in the pregame show. Mead is really good on the O and D line. That is where their strength lies. Yeah, they really do. And that's, that's good.

They're going to cause some problems in the GSL with this, this line. And unfortunately for Ferris, they, they were only had. They only had 10 players. Now they have 11. All right, Ferris, now in the unenviable situation, Hunter Ziegler of kicking from Inside his own end zone.

Mead really brings the rush. He gets a good kick off to the right side of the field going right to left. That one takes a bounce. Out of bounds around their own 40 yard line. So about 40 yards to go for Meade.

The new quarterback for me, agreed, Colby Dainton Danielson rocking back out there. 6 foot 3, already 165 pounds. The junior has the best arm on the team.

He's the best pocket guy on the team. Also, Paul happens to be the fastest guy on the team, so hence the rpo. That makes total sense. Yeah. We will see him run the ball a lot tonight.

As he comes out under the gun on the right side 40 yard line. He turns and hands off the Braun the motion, man, that ball is on the ground. He fell on it at the Ferris 35, gain of 3 yards. He's lucky he fell on that. He did, but nice job on the outside over there.

That was Brody hall who was playing kind of that outside linebacker position. He saw kind of the, you know that speed option deal where the receiver comes across in motion, the quarterback turns around, just pitches in the ball. You know, that's actually a handoff. And then he was trying to run around the left end, but hall was right there to make the tackle. Nice job by him.

Plenty of folks in the stands tonight here at Union Stadium on both the Mead and Farah sides. Man, how good, good does this feel? It is nice. It has been a while. All right, Mead back in offense here in their white helmets.

White unis. Second down and nine. Bron the motion, man, right to left. Danielson takes a high snap back to the 45 yard line. Throws a bomb back behind the defense.

Oh, and he overthrew his man in the end zone. Pass intended for Max Workman. Yeah, Workman's got good speed as well and he's a good tall looking dude. His brother also played and very good athletic family. The Workman's out there And I like the way this kid is developing.

He's going to to turn into an outstanding, you know, wide receiver as well. So good for him and you know, just a nice job. He's only a sophomore but that ball was just a little bit too far out in front of him. I think if he throws it a little bit flatter, that's a touchdown. He had his man beat.

Yeah, his older brother Michael was pretty good here a couple years ago. Really good. All right, so after the incomplete pass, third down and a long eight on the Ferris 36 yard line on the right side of your radio, good snap here to Danielson pocket collapsing, throws over the middle. Nearly intercepted pass right through the hands of Khalil Lindsay. Yeah, but that was good.

Good coverage over the top too. And the Saxons had that cover and Lindsey that just. That's tough because he's breaking on the ball, he's looking at the man. Also that ball was right by me. I don't think he was able to get his hands up.

If he might have been able to see that a little bit earlier, he might had a chance. But how about Ferris? Too tight inside their 50 possessions and they're gonna have to punt the football. They're coming away with another turn. So great job by this sack and defense.

Kind of with their back pinned against the wall. Five minutes and thirty seconds to go, fourth down for me. They will punt left to right down inside the 10 yard line. That one will bounce out of bounds and for the third straight time here, Paul Ferris. Not the best field position with 524 to go in the first.

Yeah, but that's okay because you're in a, in a situation where they're playing field position right now, Mead's keeping them pinned and Ferris hasn't shown that they can move the football on the offense right now. So sooner or later the Mead offense is going to kind of wake up and come up with a big play. If they can keep, you know, keep Ferris pinned in their own territory. That's really cool. By the way, you're listening to all the Greater Spokane league action on the home of the GSL that 700 ESPN 105.

3 FM524 here to go in the first quarter, no score between Mead and Ferris to open up the 2021 GSL season. Ferris once again pinned on their own eight yard line. The senior right handed quarterback Paxton Page takes the snap, turns and hands to Cruise Wheeler. He jukes past two guys, barely gets past the line of scrimmage, Chugs his leg Forward falls forward, gain of two yards. Yeah, that's, that's okay.

You know, I mean, they're just trying to find some weaknesses. They're basically probing. They're trying to figure out, you know, where they can go. But they're realizing between the tackles is probably not a good option. I would work the outside, I would get my quarterback outside the end, give him an option to run or pass.

Let your receivers. I think there's a good matchup there. I think they can win some back. Anthony Aguirre, their best wide receiver. Six foot five, lining up on the left side all the way near to the sideline next to Paige.

Keone Lindsay, a great player. Also running back is lined up in the left side slot. Second down and long. Turning handoff back to Cruz Wheeler. Yeah, maybe got a yard or two on the play.

It's still going to be third down along here. 430 to go in the quarter. Well, what, what Ferris does not want to do is turn the football over. They don't. They want to be able to be in a position where they can, you know, basically try to set up some plays and you're going to be a little bit conservative inside your 20.

You don't want to turn it over here, you know, but you're not going anywhere running the ball between the tackle. So they're going to have to come up with a different set me. Defense is ready for the pass. They're back in their white uniforms with two safeties as Ferris lines up from their own eight yard line. Three receivers to the left side for Page and they will be conservative.

Turn in hand to cruise Wheeler. He gets back to the line of scrimmage, nothing else. That'll take us down inside four minutes and that'll bring out the punch unit once again here for Ferris. Yeah. Skyler Harkson was on the tackle, number 34, doing a great job.

It was a false start, so now it's first down and 15. They line up with the Ferris 40 yard line on the right side of your radio dial. Mead wearing all whites tonight. Ferris on defense and their famous red jerseys and silver helmets. Junior quarterback Colby Danielson takes the snap on the 45 yard line, turns and hands off to Dakota Hackworth.

He bounces forward off a couple of defenders, picks up a gain of about three yards. Call it second down and a 12 yards ball. Well, and I think you're seeing, you're seeing me do the same thing. They're kind of conservative, but that's what Deer park did. You know, when Coach Stamps was up there, they really tried to establish the run.

Then that kind of opened up the passing attack here and they feel that they can run the ball. But I'm giving Ferris a lot of credit. Their defense, they bent a little bit, but they've not broken and they're playing pretty darn good up front. Yeah, Ferris D line is not that big, but man is their linebacking court Big they got Cruz Wheeler, the famous halfback in there. He's been good on defense so far.

Second down and 12 for me. Three receivers lined up to the right. Turning a handoff. The Dakota Hackworth, second straight play and this time the defensive line for Ferris was there to meet him. No gain.

Third down and long. Looks like we'll see Danielson throw this time. Brody hall was in number 17, the linebacker. And that's, that's a nice thing about having an aggressive defensive front and that's what Molec likes to do is he wants his defensive lineman to occupy the offensive lineman. Hence your linebackers then can scrape and make a lot of tackles.

And I think you're going to see those linebackers, Wheeler, hall and Locust, all of those guys are going to be very busy and very active tackling tonight. Ferris has already thrown one interception, none so far for me. Saxons defense trying to force it here against the junior quarterback in his first game in a Mead uniform. From the Ferris 39, here comes the snap. Danielson sacked back behind.

That ball is on the turf. Man, what a tackle by Davion Walter. He came in from the blind side unguarded and knocked the heck out of Colby. Danielson, he also has a tackle as well. The senior came in there so he's done a nice job.

And let's give credit where credit is due right now. This Ferris defense, they've been playing inside their 50 the entire half this entire quarter and they have, you know, basically their meat has done nothing. It's almost feeling like a soccer game where the entire game is being played on one side of the field. Yeah, but nobody fell down and they came up with them magenta card to you know, kind of ease them through their pain. So that was a good sign.

Here comes the kickoff. That is a bad punt. That would be something you and I would do normally. Yeah, I mean ours would not be that good, but still not pretty at around the Ferris 30 yard line. Technically Paul, I think this is going to be the best Ferris field position they've started with.

Yeah. So three receivers lined up to the left side in the red uniforms for Ferris. One to the far side. Turning hand off to Paxton Page. It's an RPO Cruz.

Wheeler has it along the right side. He brushed it by a man. He's got a gain of about 20 yards past the 50 and down inside the Mead 45. A couple of missed tackles, but what a run. Well, what he did that was awesome as he was basically stood up right, right at the line of scrimmage and then he bounced it to his right and it was cool because Patrick Page came up and laid a block, kind of got in the way of the corner there and he just sprinted down the field.

That was the best play by far. 20 yard gain from that standpoint. Really, really cool. Absolutely the best play on offense tonight for Ferris and Paxton Page. In this offense here, they might be in business.

Mead four down linemen on defense, three linebackers, two deep safeties in their all white uniforms. And for the first time tonight, Ferris on the Mead side of the 50, taking it from the Panther 45. High snap here to Paxton Page. Pocket collapsing, throws far side hauled in by his best receiver. Anthony Aguirre makes the catch for 10, falls forward for another couple.

That's back to back. And now all of a sudden you get a big run, broken tackle and guess what happens? They get a little bit momentum here. They're starting to feel it and this offense is coming alive.

They're down to the Mead 34 yard line in Ferris. You can hear the band going on the far side of the field here at Union Stadium. A big student section for them tonight. All done up and read a lot of school spirit for those kids from the South Hill. Three receivers from the near side turn and handoff to Cruise Wheeler on the new first down.

He's back to the line of scrimmage, maybe a gain of one. And then on the tackle. Who else? Chris Prince. Chris Prince has been a busy bee.

That's his second tackle, you know, on the day as well. So he's been doing a nice job and being very aggressive out there and playing well. Ferris taking him in. Finally on this play, Paxton Page talking to his receivers, also getting an award in with Anthony Aguirre. Looks like we have a timeout on the field.

Actually, Paul here. That is the end of the first quarter. I take it back. No score between Mead and Ferris, but the Saxons are threatening. And that is the end of the quarter.

They are driving left to right in their red uniforms on the Mead 35 yard line. Paxton Page drops back, throws to his left off the hands of Keone Lindsey. They've been hooking up over the course of the last couple of plays. And here we go. Paul, these teams are starting to heat up.

It feels like kind of a slow first quarter, but they're finding their foot. I think Paxton would like to have that throwback. He didn't set his back foot that time and that ball sailed on him. He had an open receiver over there, Lindsey, who's the captain as well, you know, he's done a nice job along with Josh Benny, you know, the center. So that was a throw I think he'd like to have back because he had an open receiver.

All right, third down and long, call it. Third down and 11 here for Ferris. The senior page looks good this drive, but he already threw an interception to start the game. He drops back. A lot of pressure coming from the D line, drawers to his left, throws.

That one's hauled in by Johnny Tallarico at the 20. That's a first down. He runs forward down to the 12 yard line before he's taken down by his ankles. That's a Damon Orthodontics first down and all of a sudden the Saxons are threatening inside the 15. Nice job by Johnny Talarico.

That was just a delayed route. He stayed in, he was blocking. He saw his quarterback was in trouble and released just kind of right out in the flat. So basically Paige did a nice. Paxton did a nice job of kind of rolling to his left and just flipped the ball right up over a defender's head and there he was.

All right, the Saxons down to the 13 yard line of the Mead Panthers. And here they come, two receivers left, two receivers right. They're on the option on first down. Pitch to Cruise Wheeler along the outside. Got a flag down, might have a hold, a flag down around the backfield as well.

He got out of bounds around the the four or five yard line close to the first down. But this one might be coming back and that's too bad because you have a nice play, you know, you're moving the football. This is by far the best drive for either of these two teams then they come out and they get a penalty and that's the thing that drives coaches not especially early in the season you've got a hold and it's you know in high school to be honest you could probably called holding on every play if you wanted to.

So. But on that one that may have impacted the play because they basically spun the defensive end of the outside and, and you know he would have been, he would have been there to make that play. So that was a good call by these, this official. I'll tell you what, Cruz Wheeler is a heck of a player. He's been.

We saw make a couple of plays at linebacker. You've seen him with a couple of good runs tonight. He's kind of the one holding. I would say both units together with the glue for Ferris. Yeah, I would agree with that.

On offense he's had a couple of big plays with that nice 20 yard run and a couple other runs sprinkled in there. No score between Ferris and Mead but the Saxons are threatening 10 yard penalty. They're down at the Mead 25 yard line now driving left to right, Paxton Page drops back.

A lot of pressure coming. Throws to the right side on an out route pass intended for Trevor Morton. He was covered but for the second consecutive time Paxton's thrown at Paul. It was high. Yeah, I would agree.

And there was pressure that time. So you know that's a situation where he, he was kind of feeling that pressure. Good coverage out there by Austin justice, number nine. He's a junior and he was right there. But I think that was a pressure based incompletion because they kind of got right into his face.

He wasn't able to set his feet when he tried to throw that thing in that ball sailed on. All right and Ferris after kind of going a quick up tempo these last couple of plays now they are really taking their time getting their play called. Well they better hurry up because they're going to run out of time here on, on the, on the clock as well. Pistol look here. 11:20 to go in the half deep.

Shotgun here for Paxton Page. He'll run the option A defense kind of got to him. He turns around and goes back the other way. Defender there to meet him around the 25. He's taken down by the knees, manages to pick up about six or seven yards that play should have been blown up a couple of times.

Well, he made some nice moves basically that was going to go the wide side of the field. But Mead had read that very well and they kind of got up field on him. He just kind of reversed his field, planted that foot came back around. One guy there to make a tackle. If he doesn't, that's a touchdown.

All right, so gain of call it six yards on the play. So third down and 14 coming up here for see a pass. I wouldn't be surprised if they take a shot down the middle and try to throw that ball into the end zone. Paxton Page has a great arm. He's just struggled a little bit with his consistency and his aim so far here in the first quarter to kick off the season.

We have the meets. Third down and 16 for Ferris as Paxton Page drops back, throws for the end zone on third down. Not over the end zone, over the middle. That one is hauled in, but not quite enough for a first down. So it's going to be fourth down from around the 11 or 12 yard line.

Ferris is gonna have a decision to make here as this field goal they're gonna go for it because they're gonna go for it. They don't have a kicker. I don't think that they have the confidence in right now just from that standpoint. And they basically in the spring did the same thing. On fourth down, normal field, you know, field goal range, they would go for it.

So kind of an interesting philosophy, but that's kind of what they do. Yeah. Fourth down and seven, they've got to get down to the Mead four or three yard line here. Two receivers out to each side for the senior quarterback, Paxton Page with Cruz Wheeler with him in the backfield. Four down linemen and white unis for meat on the right side of the ball.

Good snap, plenty of time for Page. He steps up in the pocket, he's going to try to run for it. A defender fell down, he gets down to the two yard line, down to the one, he dives forward toward the goal line. It doesn't look like he came up with the touchdown, but he did get the demon orthodontics. First down to around the one and that's huge.

I mean that's a great, you know, a great situation that way where he basically saw everybody covered. He pump faked and he got basically a linebackers to jump up in the air and then he went right through him and right around him and got down there, knew where the first down stick was, stuck his nose there, tried to get to the goal line. Just a nice tackle by the Panther defense. Boy, that was huge. Okay, so first down and goal to go for Ferris and their red unis there on the far right side of the field.

Down to the Mead 2 yard line and their white uniforms on defense. Man goes in motion, turns and hands off to Cruise Wheeler, second team, all league running back. He gets down to the one as he goes off tackle to the right, you know, but this is a situation where they can keep kind of pounding the ball here and you know, doing good stuff along those lines. They've got opportunities here. They don't need a lot of yards but, but if they can get a couple on each down, they're going to push this thing in the end zone.

They need two more for the touchdown, which would be our first score of the game. 928 to go here in the second quarter. Still no score between Ferris and me. Like you said, 9:30 to go here, Paul and Ferris taking their time. I think they need to get outside though.

I don't think they're going to be able to push this, you know, into the end zone. Going between the tackles, to be honest. Yeah. We have seen Mead's defensive line be bottling up runs so far tonight. All right, here comes Paxton Page out of the shotgun, three receivers to his right turns and fakes it.

No, it is a handoff to Cruise Wheeler. He falls forward to the one, did not get back to the goal line. It is going to be third down on defense here for me on a goal line stand. They're blitzing right now. They're bringing a ton of pressure.

So if that's the case, fake it to the middle and let Paxton keep the ball to the outside. I think he'll be able to score because they are really trying to bottle up the middle here and take that, that, that middle part of the, the offense away on the run. 8:45 to go until halftime here on the GSL season opener. Mead and Ferris. The Saxons are threatening on the Mead two yard line.

It's going to be third down and goal to go. Paxton Page comes back out with Anthony Aguirre flanked. Was right. He's the one. Wide receiver to the far side with Cruz Wheeler in the backfield.

Good snap. Handoff to Wheeler. They go back up the middle, he falls forward. It doesn't look like he got it back down inside the one again. It's going to be fourth down then.

What I do is I'd quarterback sneak this thing. Get, get up right underneath your center and just follow your center guard. You know, Paxton's a big strong kid to let him get in behind there. But they're so used to the shotgun you don't see them get under center very often. So I don't know if they're going to just try to pound the ball again, you know, on fourth down here.

But they, they need a yard or else they're going to turn it over and Mead's going to get the ball and no score. Eight minutes left in the first half. Ferris on the Mead one yard line. It is fourth down and goal for Paxton Paige with Cruz Wheeler behind him in the backfield. Good snap.

He's going to throw far side to Anthony Aguirre. He held onto it. Touchdown. Ferris on fourth down. That was a great throw that time.

He just did a nice job of staying there. He knew exactly where he was going to go and Paige was able to just put that ball up there perfectly. And an excellent job by Aguirre at six five. You got a six five receiver out there. Throw that thing high most of the time.

He's going to win that. Anthony Aguirre is the Number one, go up and get it. Receiver in the Greater Spokane League. He has been offered by Idaho. And I'll tell you what, man, they.

They have a really good connection. Paul, he transferred from Oregon City with Paxton Page this spring. No, you're right. And they were, they worked out together and they were kind of a package deal. But that was a great touchdown and an excellent drive.

And now you've got meat offside. So they'll move it half the distance. And Mead showing a little bit of, you know, kind of uneasiness here. And I give the Saxons a lot of credit. How about Malik?

He's got this team ready to play. Their defense did not back down when they had terrible field position in that first quarter. They didn't give up any points. And now they've got their first touchdown of the game with 741 to go here. And more importantly, Paxton Page throws a touchdown and gets his team in the lead here.

6 nothing. Let's not forget his first drive of the season here. He threw an interception. I know. Just phenomenal here for the senior quarterback from Ferris.

Their special teams unit is out to kick this one away and try to make it 7 nothing. Good snap. That kick is up. It's got pretty good height there from Trevor Morton and It is good. 7 Nothing.

The kickoff down here, around the 10 yard line. Me and their white uniforms will return it just past their 20. Pretty good field position, not quite to the 25. So here comes me trying to respond to that 65 yard Ferris touchdown drive. Paul, what do we think?

Well, you know, with, with the guy are out there and I like the fact that they went wide. They knew they were going to get man for man coverage because Mead had really bottled up the inside. They had everybody in there, they were blitzing, bringing a lot of pressure. So you knew you're going to have a one on one matchup and so that's an easy call. Just throw that fade route and you know, guy went up and you know that, that two yard catch.

He's got a couple of catches now for 14 yards and, and a touchdown. Good job by him. So Ferris on top of Mead here, 7 nothing after the touchdown with 7:33 to go until halftime. Mead trying to respond. Their offense has looked pretty good.

Two receivers out to the right for Colby Danielson and his white uniforms and white helmets. They turn and hand off to Skyler Harkness. He breaks off a couple of defensive linemen and shifts his way to the right for a gain of about five yards between the hashes. Well, and I think that's going to be important. I think Mead now has a sense of urgency.

You've got 720 to go here in the game. They're down by a touchdown. Their offense is kind of sputtered a little bit and I don't necessarily know if it's just early in the season. Defenses traditionally early in the year are going to be a little bit farther ahead of the offense. But they've got to figure out this fair Saxon defense because they have done a very nice job of bottling up the Panthers.

Yeah, the fairest defensive line and linebacking corps has been the really surprise breakout unit of this game. So Far second down and five. Mead driving right to left, turning the handoff back to Dakota Hackworth. He beats a couple of linebackers. He's all the way to the 50 yard line, down to the 46 yard line of the Saxons.

And here comes Mead finally. That was just a bullet right up the middle there. He just turned and handed off to the back and he was able to split the gap between the linebackers. Got a nice block by that offensive line on the right side. And that was a huge, huge game for the Panthers.

Their best one of the day. Really good two running back systems so far for me between Dakota Hackworth the senior and Skyler Hartness the junior. One is a little more downhill, physical one's a little more shifty. But thunder and lightning starting to work well here for the Panthers as they are inside the Ferris 50 yard line. They're down on the Saxons 47 on the left side of your radio dial.

Good low snapper to Danielson. He drops back, throws to Dakota Hackworth. After he makes the run, he comes on the wheel route along the left side. He ends up getting five or six yards out of it. Yeah, that's nice.

And see, I like that because now you're starting to spread this Saxon defense out a little bit and they're doing a nice job. And that was just hit him right in stride. That was a nice throw by Danielson. You know, he hit him right in stride there and picked up six, maybe seven yards on that play. He uncorked one deep last drive, but he seems more comfortable with the wheel routes and the three or four yarders so far.

Well, that's something you could tell they practice a lot at. You've got basically a little fullback coming in now and trying to lend some extra blocking support here. Second down and four for me to turn and hand off the Hackworth. They're smaller, the two running backs. He goes left alongside the tackle, picks up the first down down to the 35 yard line.

And that first down is brought to you by David Orthodontics. Yeah, he's done a nice job on this drive with that big run up the middle and then that little seven yard gain as well. So this is kind of the Mead Panther offense that I thought we would see. They're starting to control the line of scrimmage. You know, they're moving basically Ferris off the ball.

Remember, Ferris is playing a lot of players two way, so they're going to start getting tired about now. And then really towards the end of the third quarter, middle fourth quarter, you're going to see some fatigue set in. All right, Me down to the Ferris 34 yard line. Only one deep safety back for the Saxons. It looks like they're expected run here against the Panther offense.

Harkness back in the backfield. Safeties drop back, first down turn and handoff light to Dakota Hackworth along the left side. The cornerbacks and linebackers there to meet him for no gain. Yeah, good play that time. Good pursuit from side to side.

Just, you know, fantastic stuff going on. And I like the way this. I like the way the Saxon defense is playing honestly. And I think they have shown the most improvement early in the season compared to what happened in the spring. They, they had some issues in the spring and this is a different defense.

You can tell Malik understand defenses. He has them playing positional defense. They're. They're basically assignment alignment, assignment execution right now. Doing a nice job after the Play.

No gain. Second down and 10. Two receivers right, one left here for Danielson. Scans the defensive points and it looks like Ferris jumped. Hey, that's good.

You get a good hard cadence on that. You get them to kind of move and you get those big bodies up there. It's tough to slow down. They get a free 5 yards. So if Mead can put this together, you got 436 to go here in the second quarter.

Get some points and counter that touchdown. We got a ball game. Second and five from the 35. That's the kind of place they could open up the playbook, right? I'd throw a post right now, try to split the safety, see if you can, you know, have a couple receivers out there, one running out or curl the other guy on the seam.

Either run a seam rod or a post. Think he's going to be open. This looks like a good spot here for me to go ahead and take a shot here for the junior quarterback, Colby Danielson. He's got three receivers split out right, one to the left. Only one deep safety back for Ferris.

He is deep in the shotgun. Ball is on the Ferris 30 on the left side of your radio dial. Turns and hands it off on a draw play to Dakota Hackworth. A short gain, maybe one on the play. Interesting play call.

Gain a one. Third down and four. Well, so much for our offensive acumen. They ended up running the ball, so, you know. But that's okay now you got third down, probably in a passing situation.

You want to play against the grain a little bit. Second down, maybe you want to throw the ball third down like this. You want to run it now they're expecting you to pass because it's third and relatively, you know, long. Not that bad. It's manageable.

Nolan Braun in the slot for me. Max workman, the 6 foot 2 sophomore receiver split out to the far side. Only one guy on him with Colby Danielson in the shotgun, joined on the right by Brandon Southerly into. Oh boy. We had guys jumping on both sides of the ball on the snap.

I don't even know who went first. Paul. That was a mess. That would have been an awful lot. That would be basically illegal motion on the entire offensive line except the center because he forgot to snap it.

All right, that is a bummer for me. Loss of five yards. Call it. Third down and a long eight here and a little bit of a bunch wing formation here with Skyler Harkness flanking Colby Danielson on his right in the backfield. Third down and long.

He will throw. Good snap, plenty of time. Throws far side Halden by Harkness, but two defenders right there to meet him and actually they knocked it loose. Fourth down. Yeah, I think that was.

That might have been. I couldn't really tell. I don't think that was Lindsay. I'm trying to figure out who made that play. But he had two players over there.

Oh, I think that was Johnny Talarico. He was the one that was able to get his path, his hands in there. So he got a nice little pbu. Good job, good coverage on the outside by the corner. And Talarico comes in at safety and rips that ball out.

Nice job. Things are starting to look really good for me to the beginning of that drive. A couple of plays got conservative on second down. I thought they should have thrown the ball then. And then, you know, and then you have a penalty, a motion penalty.

It wipes out that 5 yard. Really hurt them. So now Mead will punt from the Ferris 45 yard line. A little bit of a bummer for them. LJ Harm, their all league punter will put this one in the air.

That one flies right to left. Oh, just down to the goal line. That was nearly a perfect punt. 20 yard line. Here comes Ferris on their own 20.

All right. I'm fortunate to be able to get invited to any, any kind of stuff. First down and a turn and handoff to Cruise Wheeler. Gain a seven. Good job by Cruz.

I like him and I like the way he plays. And I think he's a kid, he's only a junior. He's going to get some recruiting love as well because he's tough. He plays both sides of the ball. He's physical as a linebacker, he runs hard.

There's a place for a kid like that. You know what's funny? He's been taking all the handoffs, but the coach, coaching staff, when we talked to him this week said he really kind of runs more as a fullback is what they said. Well, and the good backs over the years at Ferris kind of run like that. They're hard nose.

They may not be big, but they run low to the ground. And they all seem to kind of move the pile. And he's one of those guys definitely that does that. All right, so Wheeler goes off the field. He's replaced in the backfield by Keone Lindsay.

That is a swing right off to the left side. On second down, long way to go for him. He manages to get back to the line of scrimmage. He gets a first down, seven extra yards past the contact. Boy, what a first down brought to you by David Orthodontics.

I think Lindsey, amazing play. I think you're gonna have a crack back block. They're gonna be a probably a personal foul. There was 34, got absolutely blistered for, for me. And that was Harkness.

He didn't see the guy coming in there. And I think it's kind of a peel back block. Yep. And they'll do it again, which is a bummer because, man, if you're Keanu Lindsay that was a star making. No, that was a great.

And he broke a tackle. But. But again it had one of those little peel back and those are the, those are the safety issue things that they, you know, that's a half a distance of the goal kind of penalty. That's a tough one early in the season. Energy and that's safety and I like that because this game is a lot safer than when I played and you know, and they put this kind of protection in or protect the athletes and try to, you know, kind of move things forward from that standpoint point, which I think is a good move.

It's a good, it's a good rule in my opinion. All right, so far as really pushed back here. Call this second down and what 15 or second down and 16 yards now from their own 15 yard line. He's only got a couple of guys to beat. He's wrapped up around the 37 yard line for a big gain. And there's your demon orthodontics. First down, man, is Anthony Aguiar something or what? Paul, remember this is an offense that does not have Ologia Egby right now because he's sitting on the sidelines in street clothes over there.

And that was just a great job and Aguirre has been the man that. And he broke a tackle that would have only been a seven or eight yard gain. But with that broken tackle his strength, he already has a touchdown catch that was his third catch of the day. And what was that, about 22 yards? I think just about.

Paxton Page and Anthony Aguirre transferred to Ferris together from Oregon City High School. That is in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon. Pretty good football program down there, but man, are they making an impact here in the Lilac City two line. Blackers blitz on first down throw far side. Johnny Talarico is not ready for passing complete.

Well, he kind of lacks a day go that, that route. Basically he just kind of, he didn't run the route the way he was supposed to run it. And so basically Paxton threw it to the spot he thought he was going to be and you know, and that might be a little bit of fatigue. He's. He's a young man that's going both ways right now and he wasn't sure he was going to get the ball.

And it's funny because I could always, when I'd watch film, especially in high school, he could always tell who the primary receiver was coming off the line of scrimmage because they were the ones running the hardest. The other two guys weren't. So those are the little things you kind of pick up over the years. Clock will stop. One minute 40 seconds to go here in the first half.

Seven nothing, Ferris. And a timeout on the field. Well, let's. Let's do a little read here. How about that?

They've got a minute and 40 seconds to get down the rest of the field. Boy, have we been impressed with their skill. Position players, though. Cruz Wheeler, Paxton Page, Anthony Aguirre. Well, and they're missing one of their best guys.

Yeah. So you can imagine throwing him into the mix right now. But in my opinion, the biggest improvement I've seen thus far in this first half is the defensive side for Ferris. That's. That's head coach Coach Robertson putting his stamp on this football team.

So Ferris from their own 38 yard line here, driving left to right across your radio dial. Me. Defense not taking any chances. They've got two deep safeties back around the 52nd down. Page takes the snap, throws far side.

That one's hauled in by Keone, Lindsey Shakes and Bakes a couple of defenders. He's still on his feet. They push him back a couple of yards. Still managed to get about four on the play. But man, how fast and how.

How well can he move, Paul? Yeah, but they kind of hosed him a little bit on his forward progress. He had that ball up close to the 45. They moved it back to the 41. So I think the headlinesman he might be a new guy because you've got to go forward possession on that thing.

Not where he was pushed back, I was going to say. So that's a three, that's a four yard difference right there. Now it'd be third and, and about three. Yeah, they give him a bad spot. Third down and seven high snap.

Paxton Page has all the time in the world. Pocket collapsing. He rolls out left, throws nearly intercepted twice and a flag comes into the backfield. But he was hit after he threw. Yeah, good.

That was good pressure that time and that was just a nice job. Spencer Lehman came in, the defensive lineman and he gets a quarterback hurry on that one, you know, doing a nice job and kind of blisters them. But there's a flag that came in. He might have a hold going against Ferris. So I think fourth down on the incompletion.

I think you declined the darn thing and get the football back because you got basically 59 seconds to try to do something. Yep, there you go. Good job, coach. See, Coach Stamps is very smart. Smart.

He listened to me. You like both of these coaches, Paul? You like both hires? Actually I do. I know both of them and they are, they are.

If you want to have young men play for a coach in this league. All of these coaches have done a great job. But those are two guys that very high principled, high mannered and excellent football coaches. So a nice job from that standpoint and in, you know, John Barrington. Got to give him some kudos.

I think it was a great hire by him. All right so far as sends their special teams unit out to kick this one. Away from about the 30 yard line is where their punter is with 59 seconds to go here in the first half. Ferris leading 7 nothing. They will kick it away.

That snap is good. The kick is away from the 30. It is nearly blocked and this will take a pretty decent bounds to around the mead 40 yard line. It rolls to the 41. Ferris touches it down.

All right, 59 yards to go here for meat in 49 seconds. If I made I'm going to go after that punter because they can block the ball. He's been rolling half, rolling to the right side. I think you can get in there and block that thing. If I'm their special teams coach I'm putting a play in for the second half and going after them on fourth down.

But this defense is going to play a little bit softer here trying to keep everything in front. So let's see if me tries to throw the football over there. Just going to run the line and get out of here. Down seven or nothing me down seven, nothing against Ferris here. They're on their own 41 yard line.

They've got 49 seconds to go 59 yards if they want to try and tie this thing up before halftime. Colby Danielson has been pretty darn good here in the first half. Just a little bit inconsistent. Got three receivers spread out to the right, Gets the snap, roll left, throws near side. That one is hauled in for a first down.

That might be the best pass play they've been able to get in today. And that pass is hauled in for a nice game there by Preston Egan. Luke Nese was on the tackle that time and did a nice job. Kept everything in front and they were able to get out of bounds, save some of their timeouts, get the ball up to about the 46 yard line. So still plenty of time.

I think me can take a shot here, maybe another 10, 15 yards and then he could throw it in the end zone. First catch of the game for Preston Egan. Nice to have him in the rotation. Four receivers out here for me, one linebacker, halfback Dakota Hackworth in the backfield. Good snap, good pressure thrown off the hands of his wide receiver.

Pass intended for Max Workman. And we have a flag into the backfield again. Might have a hold back there or maybe a roughing the passer. We'll see kind of what's going on there. Now you got a hold against me, so if I'm Ferris, I would move that back 10 yards because, you know, you definitely want to make it tougher on them to throw that ball in the end zone.

Well, it's not quite as many penalties as we saw last time Ferris and Mead played in the spring, Paul, but we've seen these teams kind of shooting themselves in the foot these last couple of minutes they're holding is telling me that these, these offensive linemen are having a tough time blocking the D linemen. So, you know, and again, the biggest improvement I've seen. I like what I'm seeing from the Ferris defense. I still like what I see from me because they're big and strong, but that improvement on the defensive side is substantial. First down and is that 25?

Yeah. First down and 25 to go here for me to. All of a sudden they are shoved across the 50 yard line and back on their own. Low snap to Danielson. Not a lot of pressure.

Throws over the middle off the hands of Colby Thomas. Passing complete. Yeah, Colby, that was a tough pass for him to try to catch. Little bit behind him, so he just tried to get the one kind of his left hand back there and, and pull that in. And really, if you're going to catch a football, you need two hands on it.

That wasn't Kobe's fault. That was just a pass that was a little bit behind him. That's on the quarterback. All right. Second down and 25.

Man, that's hard to say, huh? That's about. That's a long way. Well, especially with only, what, 37 seconds left to go in the half. Our nickname was Wrong Way Corrigan because we were an offense that did a lot of this.

We'd have second and 32 and third and 28, things like that. Not good for an offense, trust me. Most of the Ferris defense in their red jerseys are playing about 10 yards back to the line of scrimmage. Here's the snap. The Danielson throws to the sideline.

Pass incomplete. That'll bring up third down and 35. That didn't look like the best effort on that play. Good job by. Nice.

The corner out there. He just, he kept everything in front. That's what you do. Again, well coached. They kind of have an umbrella defense where you have, you know, safeties deep over the top.

You have corners that have loosened up a little bit. Malik, he calls the, you know, the defensive plays over there. And man, I like this defense. I like what they're doing. You know, these.

Both of these new head coaches love defense. They're actually both the DCs, Keith Stamp and. That's right. Yeah, that's right. I forgot about that.

And you highly educated young lads like yourself would bring that point up. Well done, sir. That's me, Paul. I know. Third down and 25 here, 34 seconds left for me.

Danielson takes a snap, rolls right. Heavy pressure beats a guy, throws far side. Whoa, he skipped that one. It was nearly intercepted by Johnny Talarico. He's lucky that one hit the turf.

4th down and 25. Mead will punt with 30 seconds into the half. Second pass breakup by Talarico. And he. I think if he could have done that over.

He caught that ball, he might have been able to house that break because there's nobody in front of him. And. And again, this fair Saxon defense gets a stop. Nobody is on the. The wide receiver to the wide side of the field.

That was an Automatic check. If nobody goes out there, you throw it to the wide receiver. But they brought somebody in. Now that finally is there to line up. Mead kicks from their own 30.

Johnny Tallarico waiting for it back at the 20 yard line. He did not call for a fair catch. He was touched by the Mead defense. This play is still alive. He's still on his feet, rolling left, gets past the 30, the 40, still on his feet to the 45, to the 50.

He's taken down by the ankles on the Mead 45 yard line. That should have been a fair catch. He took it from the 20 to the 45, across the 50. It was funny because Mead was in perfect position to make a tackle, but instead of wrapping up the return, guy just kind of chest bumped him there. And I think he was trying to slow down thinking, oh, I got here before the football did.

You know what? Blow the dude up. Because if you, you do that, guess what? You have about a 35 yard return. That was a great job by Talarico.

Well done. Boy, oh boy, oh boy, was that almost a complete mess for me. I know. Well, now you've got 13 seconds left here. You still can take a couple of shots.

Yeah, Ferris can go ahead and take a shot here from Paxton Page. But a flag comes in from the far side, reflects man, like on the sidelines for Ferris or sideline warning. Yep, sideline warning on Ferris. All right, no penalty on the play. Still first down and 10 for them to go.

They're on the me 48 yard line. They are driving left to right in their famous red jerseys and silver helmets. Don't they all, all teams have a get back coach on the sidelines, don't they? Do they in high school? Yeah, get back.

You get, you got to get back. And that's all they yell the entire game. Now Mead's going to take it to out here, so you know, you can't take it into the, into the locker room. Can't take it with you, Paul? Well, let's, let's see.

And I think they have to feel pretty good about themselves right now. Me defense and they're all white uniforms playing away. Back on the right side of the field, Paxton Page has two receivers to the left, two to the right. He's got Cruz Wheeler with him in the backfield and he is standing right on the 50 yard line. Time for one more big play for Ferris to send it into halftime.

Takes the snap, fakes a handoff, steps up, looks like he's gonna run for the sideline. To the 40, to the 35. He's dragged down out of bounds with two and a half seconds. I guess we have time for one more play. And that is a first down brought to you by Damon Orthodontics.

They got it down to about the 36 yard line. So this is, this is well within Paxton's range in terms of his ability to throw, but he's having a tough time of standing back there. Again, the me pressure, they know he's going to pass, so they're kind of pinning their ears back right now and they're coming after him. So let's see if they take a shot. And this is where it would be nice to have oil Joe Egby, you know, on one side.

And then of course you've got, you know, you've got Talarico and you got Lindsay and of course you've got Anthony Aguirre at 6, 5. You just put those guys on opposite sides. Which side are you going to roll your coverage to? Who are you going to try to take out? Well, Mead is now running toward the.

They're running to the tunnel like it's the end of the first half. There's two and a half seconds left. Or are there, is there a chance that Ferris thought they got out of bounds and they did not because the official clock still says 2. 5 right. And the White Hat's coming over right now to have a discussion and looks like Mead thought that was the end of the half.

I agree and I think really the story besides that touchdown touchdown catch their guire was the fact that the Ferris defense basically, you know, page through an interception set ball up on about the 25 yard line.

They also got the ball in the 16 as well and pretty much that first quarter had had all their possessions, three of them inside the 40. And yet the defense stood stood tall. Malik Roberson has really done a nice job getting this defensive play at a very high level. It is halftime here. Gonzaga Prep on the road at U High. Lewis Clark, Ridgeline. That's a pretty interesting game that one started up at 7. Mount Spokane and Cheney also going at it as well out in Cheney. We will see them next week on the GSL game.

I think we got the. I think we Got the pick of the litter tonight, Paul. Actually it's turned out to be a better game than I thought and I think both of these teams are pretty evenly matched. Both these defense have been able to step up and do some good stuff here. But give Ferris credit.

They both their back on the defensive side. Then they got a turnover and then they were able to get that touchdown pass on fourth down. That was a big play. Elsewhere another fun game I did not see on the schedule. Pullman against Zilla.

You know I lived my first TV job was in the Tri Cities. Zilla is a good little program. Yeah, they're going to put a scare I think maybe into Pullman tonight. That should be fun to see elsewhere. Shadow park is out at Timberlake across the state line and East Valley is playing Deer park who is having their.

This is a whole new era for them without Keith Stamps now that he's come to meet. Yeah, that's true and they had a nice program. I've done a bunch of basketball and baseball games over the years out there. And many years ago when we did the old Rainier bank game of the week on Fox 28 we did a Deer park game when Tim Rosenbaus a quarterback at Pullman he quarterback sneak. They were on their one yard line going out.

He went 99 yards in a quarterback sneak then ran over the sidelines and orders a Domino's pizza. And about a quarter later it showed up. Don't you. He was a character back in that day. I would have loved to see that.

It gives everybody a Chance to go out. I was like that. You go in and get a little orange slice, you get some water. You could throw some water in your face and try to get all the dirt and grass and cleat marks that I usually had because I got run over so much. So, you know, you can kind of clean up a little bit.

You come out, then you kind of come back out and stretch and do some calisthenics, get your head ready for, you know, the Next. The next 24 minutes and that's cool. And I give. Both of these teams are both battling defensively. It's turned into a defensive struggle.

We thought that Ferris had a little bit more ambitious on offense even without one of their stud wide receivers. And that's kind of how it's gone that way. And we talked about me, how good they've been up front, you know, in terms of the physical play on both sides of the ball. They had put together a nice drive and then kind of had a penalty and some things that knocked him out of decent field. Field position.

But I think you'll see the Panthers come back in the second half, make some adjustments and see if they can get back in this game. Folks, that is the hall of Fame analysis you tune in for here on the Arby's GSL game of the week on 700 ESPN as we are ready to kick off the second half here in week one. My name is Greg Talbot here for most of the year alongside the legendary Paul Sorensen with Steve the Wingman Pry back in our 700 ESPN studios. Like we said, we're kicking off the GSL season tonight in the Ferris Saxons down off the South Hill taking on the Mead Panthers. Ferris leading seven nothing.

And Paul, what a great scene to have people actually back in the stands for some real fall Friday night, highest school football. We have kids in the student sections on both sides of the field. The kids from Mead and Blue and Gold, kids from Ferris over in their red and silver. We got the referees waddling down on the field in black and white like a couple of penguins. It's been great.

Man. 7 Nothing. Ferris second half should be a blast. What is the biggest key for you in the second half? I think for both these teams to sustain their drives, not let penalties kind of kick the wheels out from underneath them, because both of these teams had opportunities.

And then they would have a holding penalty or, you know, an offsides penalty or a motion penalty, and that would kind of wipe out the momentum of the drive. So put together some drives, stay penalty free, don't turn the football over and let your, your studs make some plays. And I'll tell you what, Paul, coming into this game we thought that the Ferris defensive line would, for lack of a better word, we thought their, their defensive line would look a little bit tender. Not at all. Their defensive line has been strong as can be.

I completely agree. And I think having having a defensive coordinator who spent time at both the FCS and FBS levels in college, and Malik, you know, Robertson is really making a difference, especially at the high school level. They're disciplined, they're not getting out of position. They're running to the football and they're tackling in space. And that's the sign of a good D in my opinion.

All right, so Farris received the kickoff to start the first half. And it'll be Mead back on to receive from the left side of the field to start the second half. It'll be our Papa Murphy's kickoff to begin the second half. Change the way you pizza. What's your favorite pizza?

Quick question. Oh, it's always pepperoni and sausage. I'm a meat eater, man. Good man. Well, I like, I like barbecue, barbecue chicken and a little onion there and I'm a happy dude pizza at all.

And we're happy Pete. Yeah, Any kind of pizza. And then you talk about penguins. That's how you get the body like one. You eat lots of dough.

Do you often have penguin as a topping on pizza ball? No, no, I trust. Is that legal? I think that would be a problem, yeah. No, but it tastes good.

No, I don't think so. I think it'd be blubbery and oily. So no. So I'm staying with the chicken. All right, so Ferris ready to kick off?

They're going right to left on your radio dial. In their famous silver helmets and red uniforms. They lead me 7 nothing here on the GSL game of the week opener. The kick is away. A low line drive kicked around the 20 yard line.

That one flies out of bounds. So great field position for me Paul to start the second half well and again it's, it's up to, to the offense now to step up and make some plays. They've got an offensive line that can dominate here. They need to start creating some holes and let the running backs, you know, make some things happen but also then set up the play action pass. All right, so great field position for me.

They are down 7 nothing to begin the second half. But I'll tell you we have liked their new quarterback, Colby Danielson. Pretty big guy, 6 foot 3, 165, he's a junior, transferred over from Mount Spokane, so this is his first game in the media system. Paul, what do you thought of him so far? Well, I like his arm strength, you know, I think he's making some good decisions, but you know, he's got to make, he's got to make some throws to stretch his defense right now.

And he's been kind of checking down on his passes, so I'd like to see him maybe stretch his defense by going deep a little bit. Mead in their all white uniforms, white pants, white jerseys, white helmets and navy blue numbers, they take over their own 35 yard line. Driving left to right across your radio dial, Snap loaded and hands off to Dakota Hackworth. He picks up maybe one on the play and there is that big strong Ferris defensive line to take him down for just a gain of one, you know. And again they doing a nice job.

They're really solid on their defensive front. Last spring they were getting up field, they were getting blocked. You could tell that they were having some issues. They weren't real big. They're not getting moved around this year.

Listen to that Mead student section. We miss that kind of stuff here on the radio, did we not? Second down and eight here for me. Deep shotgun for Danielson with Hark with him in the backfield. Turns and hands off on second down.

The defense is not expecting that one. He gets into the linebacker corps, bounces up for the right hash mark at the 40 yard line. Gain of about two on the play. That'll bring up a manageable third down and five yards from the 40. That was Bird and Hall, the two lineback, 1D tackle and also a linebacker in there.

Brody's had three tackles already and Cruz Wheelers had a couple of tackles with a pass breakup. So nice job by that linebacking corps to be solid first half mvp. Cruz Wheeler. Yes. Yep.

His ability on both sides of the ball as a linebacker he's stout in the middle and as a running back he had, you know, probably 40 plus yards rushing and caught a couple of passes on the backfield. Third down and along four for me from their own 40 yard line on the left side of the 50 to the near side, Nolan Braun, low snap, Danielson throws to the left side. That one knocked away. Low throw around the knees of Brandon Sutherley. Pass incomplete at the middle of the field.

That'll bring up fourth down and what should be a punting situation here. Great defense that time, you know, by the Saxons. And that was Carson Locks the linebacker, number eight. He just kind of wrapped his arms around the defender there and was able to get a hand in and, and get another pass broken up. So we've seen some good defensive plays by this defense, you know, using their hands.

First team all league punter LJ Harm gets one in this, this one in the air for me. Rolls all the way down to the five and gets into the end zone. Nearly a perfect punt. Instead Ferris will take it from their own 20 yard line on the touchback. Yeah, that's too bad.

You're hoping maybe that thing's going to kind of bounce to the right side. That just kept rolling, hit point first and rolled about 15 yards. That was really a great punt. He out kicked the coverage and that's what you want to do when you have basically a one man, you know, return thing. If you have two men back, it's hard to angle kick that with one.

You just kick away from out kicking the coverage is what you want to do in life, Paul, as well as. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. I tended to usually kick it and it would go dead right. That's probably not a good thing.

Same it'd be. It's nice to get that high spiraling punt that hits just like we just saw. As opposed to a dribbler off to the right. All right, Ferris back in. Offense from their own 20 yard line on the right side of your radio dial and their silver helmet helmets in red uniform as the senior quarterback Paxton Page has been good tonight.

One touchdown, one interception. Comes out of the deep shotgun. He's standing at the 15, takes the snap, pitches to Cruise Wheeler. They run the option, shakes two defenders. He's brought down by a cornerback on the far side of the field for a gain of about three yards.

Yeah, good job there. And again I like that they keep the clock going because right now I think Malik Robertson and Ferris feel pretty good about how their defense is playing. They're not giving up the big plays. I mean they had that one good run, you know, know a couple of little small little gashes but overall they've, they've kept everything in front, rally to the football and Mead has gone nowhere on offense.

And so burn clock here, try to get some first down, move the sticks. A lot of receivers out here for Ferris. Anthony Aguirre split far to the right, Johnny Talarico far to the left. Here's come second down and seven turn and handoff the Cruz Wheeler maybe a gain of one on the play. That me defensive line is so big and strong.

Paul, they were Ready for that one? Well, they have multiple, multiple tackles all the way across. You know, the front from Layman, Gatlin, Connors and, and Prince, all at least two tackles each because they've been such a force. I also have a quarterback hurry by, by Layman and the captain, Chris Prince, number two up there is. I think he's an excellent football player.

I really like the way he flies around. Chris Prince, the 6 foot 2, 225 senior offered by Whitworth a couple of weeks ago. Hey, I like that four down lineman on defense here for me, they bring a linebacker blitz on third down and five. Paxton Paige takes the snap, falls forward. It was a design QB sneak.

Maybe got a yard out of it, but not nearly the six he needed. That'll bring up fourth down and should bring up a punting situation. Layman was in on that tackle as well and a host of, of the linebackers. I think Gross and Harkness were also there, but good team defense and I think you're starting to see the intensity with me, Bill. They know they've got to get some stops, Greg, and they need to give their offense to some decent field position because they've struggled moving the ball against the sacks of defense.

All right, so Ferris on top of Mead 7 nothing here, 845 to go in the third quarter. Ferris brings out their punt unit once again. They roll right again. It's a low line drive kick down the right hash mark. That takes a pretty good Ferris bounce across the 50 yard line, rolls down and touched at the Mead 48.

So not that long a drive for them to go here as Colby Thomas touched it down and Colby Danielson will come back out here for the Mead Panthers. Paul, as they start this new drive. Have you liked this new Keith Stamps offense he brought over from Deer park or not? Well, I think the, the old offense was a little bit more explosive. It just takes time.

I mean you've had one half to make a decision on this thing. I mean their first half compared to what they're going to be six or seven games into this thing. I think it's night and day and they're running into a defense that's pretty good. Better than I thought, to be honest. So I think they need to widen this thing, get outside.

They, you know, some of the receivers are gonna have to step up and make some explosive plays here. Me down 7 nothing to Ferris and the Panthers on offense from their own 48 yard line on the left side of the 50. Here comes the handoff to start the Drive. Dakota Hackworth, he takes a couple of guys with him through the defensive line into the secondary for a gain of 11. That's a first down brought to you by Daymond Orthodontics.

And here come the Panthers. That was a nice run by, by him. Just a nice job of, you know, of getting up field and making things happen there. Just good blocking on the left side, created a lane and was able to split the linebackers. Really nice gain of about 13 yards on that play.

They're now down to the Ferris 42 yard line. Here comes first down. Turn in hand this time to Harkness, their second of the two headed monsters at running back. He goes soldier first into a linebacker for a gain of about five. Yeah, but that's, that's what we kind of thought we were going to see.

We thought they were going to attack it between the tackle. Those last two plays they picked up 17 yards. Tacking in between the tackles. Harkness really is. They're more hard nosed downhill runner.

Yeah, I like him. And he does a nice job of planting that right foot and getting up field. He doesn't mess around. Second down and five to go back to the ground. They go back to Harkness and he goes back shoulder first into the secondary for another first down.

That's a gain of seven. That first down brought to you by Damon Orthodontics. This looks like the best drive for me so far, Paul. Yep. And there I think, think this is a different temple.

I think they might have had their tushies chew to Scotia halftime saying look guys, we built up a reputation on the offensive line. You're getting, you did not win that first half. You need to come out, win the second. They're doing it right now. Ferris up on the line on defense, four down linemen, three linebackers, one deep safety.

New first down, man in motion. Nolan Braun takes the swing play, gets about four yards before he's pushed out of bounds at the 24 yard line. That was a nice play. That was just a, you know, a speed option where the receiver comes in motion, quarterback gets a snap, just hands the ball off right in front of him. He has good blocking.

They pull the guard had excellent blocking by the wide receiver and a lead block by the fullback. And this is really their best drive by far. They're, they're picking up yards in big chunks right now. That was just a nice job. Notably they're doing it on the ground.

And no surprise after what's happening here, it looks like Malik Roberson and Ferris want a Timeout to kind of get their defense back together. And that'll take us to a timeout as well. This has been a great drive. 656 to go in the third quarter. All right, like you said, Paul, 656, Ferris on top of Mead 7 nothing. But the Panthers are looking really good. They're down at the Mead 25 yard line here on 2nd and 4.

Throw down the middle from Danielson. Throws into double coverage. It's knocked away. Boy, they went for the end zone and what a great breakup with the last minute there by Keone Lindsay. We have liked him tonight.

Paul Sorensen pass broken up there again and we've seen about six of those right now by this Saxon defense. So they're flying to the ball. Great, great coverage that by by Keone Lindsay. And he just went up high, pointed that thing, knocked it away. But that was not a bad throw.

That was right there and receivers got to make that play. That's a 50, 50 ball, a DB, one big third down and four here. Coming up for me. Going left to right across your radio dial. They're down at the 24 yard line of Ferris and flags come in.

That's going to be on the Saxons and that's going to be a first down. Yeah, that's, that's. That drives coaches nuts. But that was a good hard count and he got the defensive end to kind of roll into the neutral zone. And guess what?

You don't even have to run a play. You pick up a first down live to play another day. Nice job. This is not the time. If you are Malik, Roberson and Ferris that you want to be giving out freebies huh?

Not inside. Not with them inside your 20. They've been relatively disciplined for the first game. You're going to usually see a lot of mistakes and that's just a good. That's the second hard count off size penalty we've seen.

First down and 10 from the 20. Hand off the Harkness. It looks like he should have been brought down in the backfield. Somehow he's able to get back to the line of scrimmage and maybe a gain a one. He put his hand on the ground and kept falling forward.

Well he got tackled about 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage. For him to get anything, you know even. Yeah, I think he did pick up a yard. That should have been a three yard loss to be honest. That was a four yard gain.

When you think that he would have been tackled. The backfield they'll give him officially a gain of one. So they're right between the two hash marks on the Ferris 19 yard line. Second down and nine. Me trying to to tie this game with a touchdown here.

Play action. The handoff to Braun. He's going to run up the middle. Beats a couple of guys. He's into the secondary, past the 10, down to the five.

That's a Damon Orthodontics first down and Meade is really threatening for the first time tonight. Yeah, that was a nice job. Little 12 yard game there again by Harkness 34. He's been a beast and he basically great blocking. They faked it to the left side.

Came back with a little counter to the right. The left guard pulled and was able to seal and kick out on the defensive end. And he had plenty of running room over there to the right side. That was really really well done. Six minutes to go here in the third quarter.

Ferris on top of Mead seven. Nothing but Mead now down on the Ferris five yard line in their classic all white uniforms. Ferris stack in the box on defense. There we are in red. Here comes the first down Play turn handoff in the backfield to Brawn.

He falls forward. He did not get much past the line. Scrimmage. It's Going to be second down and goal from maybe the three yard line. That was a good play on D.

Yeah, that was. And this is where. And again they've been going to the right side. They think, I think they found kind of an area, you know, if I'm, if I meet, I'm going to load up there. That might be the strength there on the right side.

They've had some success there. Let's see if they continue to pound it, you know, to the right side there with the running backs all of a sudden. Man, that Ferris student section all in the red on the far side of the field had been loud tonight. They have gotten off awfully quiet awfully quickly. Harkness is the fullback.

Dakota Hackworth in the tailback spot here on second and goal from the two. They put a man in motion. Turn handoff. This is Hackworth, he's been good tonight. He goes off tackle to the left and is dropped for a loss.

Third down coming up. What a good stand here by the Ferris defensive line. That was, that was Wheeler. How about that? He gets a tackle for loss on that one.

Yep, they shot. They basically blitz both inside backers. The A gap, you have the center and then the guard. So that's right between the center and the guard. So the center's got to pick one guy.

He went left, Wheeler went right, he made the tackle for loss. Big play. Third down. I think you're going to have to roll out outside because the Saxons are really loading up between the tackles here. This is Colby Danielson's first game as the Mead High School quarterback.

He stands now under center with two tailbacks and a bunch formation, 430 to go. At the end of the third quarter he turns and gives to Harkness. He went nowhere. A loss on the play. That's going to bring up fourth down.

Paul, do you go for it for fourth and goal from the five? Absolutely. And Roderick Boyd was the guy that came in from this defensive tackle position. The Southmore, he just defeated the block and they just overwhelmed him. No, they're going to go for the field goal here to get good for them.

And so you know you're going to get a chance to see a little field goal action. Now this is a first team all GSL punter who's also kicking for them this year. This is LJ Harms, he's a South foot. What do you say about left footed kicker? Not a South paws but a South.

Well here comes the kick. That one goes left, bounces back in. No. Yes. Bounced back in off the left upright.

All right, so after a long game of putting together pretty decent drives, the Mead Panthers are finally on the scoreboard for the first time this year. They trail Ferris 7 to 3. After a 21 yard field goal from LJ Harms, they kick it away here to get this next drive started.

That one's out of the back of the end zone. Good leg on Harms. So to the 20 yard line comes the Ferris offense. They're leading seven to three. Paul, they have not looked bad in the third quarter.

They just haven't put together any big plays well and again, that was a long sustained drive by, you know, by me. They took up, you know, the majority of that quarter because they kept it on the ground. They threw a couple of times, but they were able to just keep kind of, you know, getting after it from that standpoint. All right, so here they come from the 20 yard line on the right side of your radio dial, Paxton page. The the 6 foot 2, 190 pound right handed quarterback has been awfully good.

The transfer from Oregon City down near Portland starts the next drive with a play action pass, rolls out, throws to Cruise Wheeler and he overshot him a little bit high. What Paul the third time the night he's overthrown a man high. He's done that a couple times. Looks like you have a player starting to cramp down there for and then a meat player that's limping off the field as well. And that's one of their good D linemen.

Oh boy. Who that could be a problem. I can't tell that's a cramp or something more. It looks like Ferris guys are going down to a knee on their own 20 yard line. Well there's two guys, there's, there's a Saxon player that's cramping on the 30 but there was a meat Panther that was limping off the field as well and I think that was.

Couldn't tell the number when he went down but it didn't look good. Looked like he twisted an ankle. Well you never ever, ever like to see an injury with high school football but especially the first game of the year after, after being gone for so long. All right, so we have a Ferris player who looks like he's really just working down a cramp. He's going to be okay.

He's between the hash marks at around the 30. We have a mead player down at the 32 not far away from that and I can't tell if that's a cramp or if that might be an injury. Yeah, I agree. Okay, between the 30 yard line for Ferris, that is Johnny Talarico who's cramping up. Well that makes sense. He's been all over the field playing both ways and special teams. Yeah, and early in the season I know that I remember in high school I even did it in junior college and it take A couple games to get into game shape and I would have cramping issues as well. Didn't matter how much water, bananas, you know, potassium, all the different things.

I tried all of that stuff. But still, until you can get your body into shape, you know, it looks like. Is that 53 or 63? For me, that is 63. On Meade is John Sebastian Montau.

Oh, boy, he's a good little player. They're starting lineman. Yeah, yeah. So he's got a little bit of an ankle issue. Hopefully he's going to be okay.

And Tallarika is going to go over there and get some Gatorade and water and hopefully he'll be back in in the fourth quarter. We're going to see Johnny Tallarico back in by the next drive, I guarantee. Yeah, he's good, man. He plays with fire, doesn't he? I like him and I like his intensity.

Absolutely. All right, back to the action here. Ferris back on offense from their own 20 yard line on the right side of the field. Second down and 10 after that last incomplete pass. Paxton Page in the backfield flanked by both Keone Lindsay and Cruz Wheeler.

Both of his halfbacks are out in this play. And now they motion Lindsay into the left side slots. Surveying the defense. Two deep safeties back for meat on second and 10. Good snap to Page.

It's a wheel. Rowdy dumps it off to Wheeler. He cuts back to the middle of the field after making the catch. Gain of about 4 yards. Good effort and that's exactly what, you know, the Saxon needs to do.

They don't need to get big chunks here. They need 3, 4, 5 yards in every play. They need to move the chains. They want to play, you know, possession football right now and ball control this thing and work the clock. They've got a four point lead.

Clock continues to run. You know, this is a big third down. Watch for the pass. Third down and seven for Paxton. Paige is overthrown.

A couple of guys tonight, but better to overthrow than under throw because he's been showing off some arm skill tonight. Well, he did have one interception, but he also has a touchdown. So that's, you know, you're batting 50, 50, that's not a bad thing. Third down and seven. Linebacker blitz coming.

They blow the play dead. Here come the flags. Yeah, I think, I think that time that was Ferris, that was against the center. I think everybody had the snap count but him because everybody was moving, even the defensive line, you know, on that. And they're going to move that back five yards and that's something that really hurts Ferris because now they're against the sticks and it makes it even tougher.

Now you got a third and 11 or even maybe third and 12 now instead of third and relatively short. And that'll change your play call too. Well, yep, you're going to have to run a deeper route, which means you have to protect longer, which means it's going to be easier for me to get to the quarterback. All right, so the sophomore, the young receiver, Trevor Morrison, number 21, comes to the near side for Ferris. Three receivers split out to the far side in their red uniforms for third down and 12.

Paxton Paige is going to have to uncork one. Here's a flag on the play as well. And it's blown dead as he takes the snap. Here we go again. Yeah, well now they're getting a little sloppy and you know, again it's another.

And this is the stuff that. And sometimes you have fatigue. When fatigue sets in, your mental makeup goes a little bit sideways there. And that's two mental mistakes by the offensive line for Ferris. That's 10 yards.

And that's something that will drive coaches nuts. They may have to run a little bit to remind themselves to understand when the snap count is and not go against it. That's, that's how you remember. That said, we have seen a lot sloppier week one football than this game. I would agree with that.

Yeah. All right, third down and 17 here for Ferris. And because he's out of the shotgun, their quarterback Paxton Pages still standing back at the 11 yard line. He takes off himself, runs to the left past the 20 yard line, gets tackled down by a couple of linebackers around the 23. Does not pick up the first down.

It'll bring up fourth down and five and they'll punt. Yep, they certainly will. And that's, that's going to be a good thing. So now the defense goes back out. That's been the strength for, you know, for the Saxons.

But they need a good punt here. And remember I thought that me got close to blocking this thing. He likes to roll to the right, send a guy up there and send two guys flank them wide. One guy goes right to the personal protector, the other guy goes off his hip. You'll block one of these.

Oh, really high snap back to around the 10 yard line. There's some hail to get that one away. It's a knuckling kick past the 40, bounces past the 50, takes a really good Ferris bounce. They're gonna let this one roll all the way past the 50 to the left, down to the mean 43 yard line. Okay Mead, last drive Paul.

Their best of the game so far bar none. How did they do it again? Do it exactly what they did. And remember you have a lot more players for oh, you've got I think a penalty down on the 20. So another penalty against, against Ferris.

Trying to figure out if they're gonna make him re kick it. Yeah, I would make him re kick that thing. That was a good bounce. That's a great kick. Move it back five yards, make him re kick the darn thing.

He may get better field position. That's three penalties. Looks like they're gonna do it. Yep, that's, you know, and that, that would make me mad as a coach. All right, so it looks like we're on the brink of doing this one again.

Just a hair over two minutes to go here in the third quarter from Union Stadium in Mead. Ferris on top of me to 7 to 3. But Ferris has not scored since the start of the second quarter. Mead finally got on the board a couple of minutes ago here in the third 21 yard field goal by their all elite kicker, LJ Harm. So after, after the penalty we're gonna kick again here.

Ferris punter back on his own four yard line and Colby Thomas back to receive. For me back at the 48, another flag comes in. This is gonna be the third time we're gonna do this. Paul Sorensen. Well this is that this would be four straight flags but the side judge over on this side, I think he blew a whistle this game.

I don't think they reset the clock. You know, I think that was, was the faux pas there. I, I, you know they did the penalty but they didn't reset. This game had been pretty clean for week one up until this point. Let's see what the referees are going to say because I think you picked this has gotten kind of dirty the last couple minutes.

Yep, thank you. Yeah, there you go. Because basically they, they didn't reset the clock. So that was on the, on the timer. Okay, so here we go again.

And at some point you wonder if they're, if the snap is just gonna go flying off to the right. Hunter Ziggler, the Senior small guy, 58170 is back as the punter for the Saxons at his own four yard line. The last couple snaps have been decent but how many times can he ask the long snapper to do it? Paul? No, you get better at it a lot of practice.

Yikes. Okay, let's go Guys throwing the flags. Let him kick. Tell them Paul. 204 to go here in the third quarter.

Ziggler standing back at his own four yard line. Colby Thomas back to receive at the Ferris 45. That's another good snap. Here comes pressure, kicks it off to the right. That is a lower line drive kick.

Takes another good bounce. Here comes Thomas. He's tackled down going backwards at the 42 yard line. Ferris, good defensive coverage on the kick. That was Devon Walter.

He's had a sack and he's also had a couple of tackles. That, that was a great special teams play by him. That ball to kind of took a high kick. That was actually a better kick, you know. So even though they had the five yard penalty made him re kick that netted to be a net a positive 1 yard gain for for Ferris.

So it actually hurt me. So we are starting to wind down the third quarter. 154 to go until the end of three. Mead's offense coming back out. They trail seven three.

When are they going to take a shot maybe and try to get a big play? They nearly had a touchdown that was dropped in the second quarter. They might do it again. Here comes first and down from their own 45 yard line. Dakota Hackworth takes the handoff, spins off a couple of linebackers, turns that into a gain of five as he goes between the hashes and is spun down to the 50.

Well, Cruz, Wheeler had a chance for a tackle for loss. He just stepped out of Wheeler's tackle and was able to get the 5 yards there or that would have been, you know, maybe a 1 yard loss if not a no gain. So you can tell, you know, Wheeler's getting a little bit tired here. He's been on the field long time. Second down and five.

Delayed snap handoff to Hackworth again. He powers forward off the left tackle for a gain of about three yards. This will bring up third down and short. Paul, this game starting to feel to me like we might be headed for a pretty good fourth quarter finish here. Well, I think you're starting to see Mead impose their will a little bit.

They're starting to wear down this Saxon defense up front. Third down and two, let's see if they can do it again on offense. Farah shifts their defensive line one guy over to the right each with exactly one minute to go left in the third. Skylar Harkness lines up the left of Danielson as the halfback. Danielson five yards back in the shotgun.

He turns and hands off to Harkness. He does impose as well. Bounces off a couple of defensive linemen, spins forward for a gain of call it about 4 yards. And that is a Damon Orthodontics. First down.

Mead is starting to move with authority. Paul. Well, 34 for me. You know, Harkness, he's been the guy. He's close to 50 yards rushing.

And you know that's, that's unofficial stats. I probably missed a few yards in there, but he's getting the majority of his yards now after contact. He's really moving that pile. 45 seconds left to go here in the third. Blitz and a freebie.

You got five yards. And Ferris linebacker came around the outside to blitz and he jumped. Yeah, and that was Noah Porter. He just wanted to try to time that thing. And again, you know, Mead smart.

That's the third penalty on a hard count. They've had 15 yards on that. So if they keep jumping, keep doing it, keep going on two or on three, make them honor your cadence. Didn't mean to do that to you, Noah. Sorry.

That was number 80 for the senior, Connor Stearns, not the freshman. You corrected it. I should have known that. Here comes first down. Long pass over the middle into coverage.

Incomplete. And a really good defense on the play by Luke Nese. Yeah, he was right there. Luke was right in his, his jersey. The one thing I've noticed is the, the Mead wide receivers are not getting separation.

The defensive backs, you know, for Ferris are doing a really nice job. They're locking in. They're right their shirt and Nice was right there. That was a nice play by Nice and all without G Day Olajoyegbi by the way. And normally he's, he's playing safety and he's a big six four dude up over the top and a heck of a wide receiver.

Second down and five for me. 25 seconds to go. Here's play action. Danielson's gonna keep it himself. He runs along the outside to the 30, down to the 25.

The 20 eventually run out of bounds inside the 15 yard line. And here comes me with 18 seconds to play in the quarter. But Paul, they did this once before and did not come over the touchdown. They need six this time. Yeah, but that was a 25 yard gain there on, on that one and he just kept it, he faked it to the inside and Ferris went with a, with the running back and they just went to the right side.

Big game, really fast tempo here for me. No huddle. Here comes the first down play. Handoff. The hack where he gets back the line of scrimmage still on his feet.

Maybe a gain of 110 seconds in the quarter and that might end it. And I do not think we're going to see a timeout. So that will be the end of the third quarter. Doing a great job of reading that that end and taking around the right side. It is Colby Danielson's first game as the meat quarterback on second down, takes the snap, throws near side pass incomplete. Really good defense by Cruz Wheeler. Man, Paul, he has been everywhere. He has and that's.

I just, I've been impressed by the coverage. I've been impressed by the defensive line. The linebackers have been nails and your safeties are, you know, are In a position as well that have been able to step up by the way. Skyler Harkness limped off the field. You know, the outstanding running back looked like he's having cramping issues.

He's down here on the 20 yard line away from the action. Third down and along eight here. Mead in their white pants, white jerseys, white helmets. Ferris on defense and red jerseys and silver helmets. Big third down and eight, here comes Danielson.

Take the snap, drops back. It's a screenplay. He throw it in the middle and it's intercepted by Ferris and they're taking it back the other way. Oh no. Back to the 40 yard line and taken down.

Mead just blew their best chance of the game to take the lead. Can't tell who it is. He's, he's after having such a good celebration over there. Number 17, Brody hall, the junior linebacker. Boy oh boy, what a play.

That'll change the game. Well that's, that's a huge interception. You know. Now you've had two each one by, you know, one by Mead, the outstanding pick by, by Hartman early in the game. And now that play by Brody hall who's also got three tackles as well, the junior, number 17 came in.

It was a tip ball, Greg, and it was hard to see but badly done screenplay. Yeah, it was. And he threw it behind the receiver too. And hall was able to pick that off. All right, so here comes Ferris.

They lead seven to three. All of a sudden they've got the ball back on their own 42 yard line. Paxton Page takes the snap, fakes play action, rolls to himself by the left side drop for no gain. You know, that might be a heck of a play of the game as well, you know, for Brody hall because Mead had that drive going. They were burning clock, they're moving down the field.

They had that big run by Danielson and all of a sudden you get an interception now and they give the ball back to, you know, the Ferris offense. I can't believe that just happened. I know, I know. And why would you. There was so much traffic going on.

I didn't like that call. That's kind of scary because they're running the ball. Well then again, you know, first game is the running a new system for a new team. That'll happen. Your best running Back to number 34, Skyler Harkness is on the sidelines.

He's, he's dealing with cramps. So they thought maybe we'll try to do something a little different. And it ended up backfiring on so no Gain on the play for the senior quarterback for the Saxons, Paxton Page. Play action again. Fakes handoff, throws deep down the left side.

He's got a man. And it's hold in down at the 25 yard line. Oh boy, what a play. It's Johnny Talarico back into the game after a cramp pull. How about that?

Huge gain on the play from their own 42 down inside the ME20. Johnny Talarico, welcome back to this game, sir. 48 yards by Talarico on that catch. How about that? Mr.

Cramp Boy comes in and he goes nearly 50. He doesn't look like he's having any leg issues. That was great. But he did a double move. He set the corner up.

He ran a little curl and go corner bit on the. On the curl part, ran right by him. And what a beautiful throw by Paxton Page. How about that? And all of a sudden, Ferris in great field position.

They're taking it from the mead 16 yard line on the right side of your radio dial. Three receivers split out to the right for Paxton. Paxton Page one to the left and cruise Wheeler in the backfield. They'll run the option pitch to Wheeler along the left side. He cuts up north, gets south to north, gain of 5 yards, run out of bounds along the left sideline.

I think that was a great pitch and I think what happened is Paxton kind of, he wanted to pitch it early, but the DN came up and got in the way. Then he came over and was going to tackle Page and then he re pitched it and now the officials are. What are they doing? Oh, they got somebody over on the sidelines. Another cramp.

Meads out some cramping issues. That's a second player. Training staff's gonna go over there. Why don't, why don't we take a time out here and deal with that? Let's do that.

Throws over the middle. Pretty good pass to Keone Lindsay. Made the catch around the. I think it bounced. He skipped it a little bit.

Short passing complete. It's going to be fourth, but I think this is going for a territory, Paul. Yeah, well, second down though. You know, basically right after that break, Paxton Page got sacked. He did.

So that was kind of a tough deal there and then that he had an open receiver, he just threw it a little bit too low and I think the receiver went down, was able to get a hand on it, but it looked like the ball skipped, you know, on that and the officials are talking about that right now. But this is a big fourth down here. They're going to have have to convert and they're gonna have to do it with 14 yards. The ball's on the 20 yard line right now. This is going to be a tough ask to try to convert this thing on fourth down and they're going to keep the offense out there.

Fourth down and 14 here for Paxton Page into the teeth of the Mead defense. They only bring four on defense. He stands up, runs for the pocket, he's going to run. Rolls out to the 15 yard line, scampers out of bounds around the 10. Pretty good gain.

Did not get there. That's okay. And that's a turnover. True, but you've pinned me deep in their territory. So instead of maybe a block on the field goal, you know, they're still up seven to three.

Now they've got to go length of the field. Plus their best running back is cramping on the sideline. Skyler Harkness, he's out of the game. And then they came back and had to throw the football. Guess what?

They got picked. So you know you had Brody hall, number 17, the junior step up and intercept the ball. So this defense, in my opinion, if I've got to pick a player of the game right now I'm going. The Ferris defense, I think they play brilliantly here and they have really improved since last spring. We have a good finish on Tap here.

Ferris 7, Mead 3, 9, 25 to go to start the season here. And Mead has the ball pinned on what their own 10 yard line on the right side. Hash mark. Colby Danielson comes out with two receivers split each way. Dakota Hack with him in the backfield.

Skyler Harkness, the other running back is hurt. They send Colby Thomas in motion. Handoff up the middle here to Hackworth. He goes left, gets between the half marks, able to turn that into a gain of 5 or 6 yards. Not bad Paul.

No, and he did a good job. He carried a couple defenders with him but that was just a little crossbuck action where they went. They went right and came back left and was able to kind of catch Ferris being aggressive and they over pursued a little bit, got out of their lanes there and that hole opened up nicely. That's a gain of 6 yards. Turning handoff to Dakota Hackworth again, they try the same play.

Didn't quite get the first down. He don't forward with the ball, he's going to be a yard short. Actually when I take it back the referees on the far side are actually going to give it to him and that will be a David Orthodontics first down at the very last second. Generous spot. Yeah, I agree.

Hayden Crumley was the guy that came in there, number 24 that, that made that tackle hard. A new first down and the clock is moving, 850 to go in this one. Boy, oh boy, we thought these teams would be pretty evenly matched but is this not exactly what you want for we. This is going to be a great finish down the stretch. Danielson sends a man in motion for the right slot to the left, turns and hands off.

It's Nolan Braun, he's got a couple of blockers. Shakes a defender to the 22 yard line, gain of three. Yeah, that's okay. Good job by Ferris that time to kind of keep everything packed in there. That wasn't a Bad play by me.

But it was better defense by the Saxons. The outside backer did a nice job of giving ground corner, came up force contained safety, came over and made the tackle. Nice job. That exactly how you draw it up. All right.

Second down and seven yards after the gain of three, still only one safety back for Ferris. Hanging out at the 35. Danielson, if he wants to take a shot, this would not be a bad time here. Second down and eight is not undoable. Instead they'll go back to the ground.

It's what's been working. It's Hackworth, he spins down. It looks like he only had one hand on the ball. It was nearly punched away. Is able to hold on to it.

Gets a gain of about three yards. It's going to be about 30. This is a big play. Well, and again they're continuing to kind of burn clock, which is, you know, which is interesting on that side. So they've got a.

They've got to get a couple of big plays here. Not doing it. Three and four downs, that's going to burn a lot of time. Third down and short, here comes Mead. Faris really stacking the box.

Only two corners and one safety back. Everyone else is in there trying to stop the anticipated run. Here's a good snap to Danielson. He turns and gives to Hackworth. He's got a first down to the 34.

Nice job by him. And that was a good, good five yard gain. And now you've got a flag. It looks like you've got both. Two sevens.

Seven for me, seven for Ferris. Both of those guys getting a little dust up over there. And you've got the headlinesman coming over, throwing a hanky. So you might have an unsportsmanlike conduct thing going. And look who's back in the game, Paul Schuyler.

Hartness, your boy, he was the guy that carried the ball, got six yards. So he's done a. He's done a really nice job. I like what he's doing and I've got him unofficially at 48 yards rushing, but the majority of that is here in the second half. Not bad at all.

Egan back into the game as though far side wide receiver. Down to the near side off. Sending unsportsman likes possibly down to the near side of the radio. Is Max Workman. Nope, that's on Ferris.

That's on Ferris. Penalty. And that's kind of the big play there. So they were three, four yards, kind of working on the run. All of a sudden, boom.

You get somebody that gets a pushy Shovey, yelly, screamy and just he gets into a little tizzy and then throws a punch, throws an elbow, you know, talk smack, whatever it is, but gives up a 15 yard penalty that will drive coach nuts. All right, they're up to their own 49 yard line now to the 15 yard penalty. It looks like one of the linemen for Ferris jumped instead, but he didn't do it in the neutral zone, so that was good. Yeah, he's able to be okay. So first down and 10 Meadows from their own 40 yard line, they go back to the ground.

It's Harkness, the defensive lineman, there to meet him for a loss of one. Oh, just a great play, man. He just broke right through the line of scrimmage and an excellent job. That, that tackle was Josh Bean, who's the nose guard, he's the senior. He just broke through, defeated the block and met Harkness about.

Actually, I think that's a loss of one. So that's a tackle for loss. Nice job. Second down and 11 and they're bringing all the linebackers up. It looks like they're ready to blitz on second down and 11.

Big play for Danielson. They go back to the ground again. Attackworth is able to cut off tackle here, gets to the left hash mark across the 50 to the Pharaohs 49. This is still third down and nine. This is a big play.

Well, it's a big drive because you're down to 625 to go here in the game. They're down by four. They're on. Ferris is 49. They got to continue to move the clock.

I think they're going to have to throw the football. I think so what can the junior quarterback, Colby Danielson do? The transfer he threw, he threw a pick from Mount Spokane High. Snap, looks right, looks left. Pressure coming, throws it.

He's got a man over the middle at the 20 yard line. He undershot him, but there was pressure that time from the outside. Oh, no pass was intended for Brandon Southerly. He was wide open, just under shot him by five yards. Paulie Adam wide open.

He did. And Broderick, you know the reason that happened? Broderick Bird, the defensive end came in and I think got a little bit of his arm. Greg, I think he just got enough of him that, that basically he couldn't step into that throw. And I think he, he kind of changed that round a little bit.

That was a huge play or else that was a touchdown. All right, harms back the punt from his own 40 and Mead fan he's got to have their heads in their hands here. Really great kick down to around the five yard line. They're going to force Keone Lindsay to return this one from the five. He breaks it past the 20 yard line running to the far left sideline between the 25 and the 30 before, before he's chased out of bounds.

Paul, that is now two potential touchdowns that Mead has dropped tonight. Well that wasn't a drop, that was just. And that was because of the defensive pressure. Yeah, because basically they. So even though he was open, they called the right time at the right play, everything was there.

Ferris steps up, gets pressure on him, gets kind of into him so he can't extend and throw that ball may have jammed his arm a little bit and that ball was under thrown or else you're right, you're singing the touchdown, you know, fight song right there and you're up to 10 to 7. All right, so now 555 here to go in this one. Ferris back on offense from their own 25 yard line on the right side of the field. And they lead seven to three and Paxton Page and CO all of a sudden are down to the situation of trying to burn some clock. It's a play action pass through the far side.

Q and A Lindsay makes a great catch for about a 7 yards and actually they push him out of bounds to stop the clock at 5,40. That's at. See and that's. You've got to know that as a player you want to stay in bounds because basically you're going to burn. 25, 30 seconds off the clock is your friend right now all you're doing.

You don't have to score, you just have to get first downs. Make them burn their timeouts. They have two of them left, no, actually three. So make them burn their timeouts, put together a drive, get, you know, move the sticks, but stay in bounds. You just basically gave them a timeout.

Second down and three here for fair. They're up to their own 35 yard line. Paxton Page takes the snap. Linebacker blitz coming, he's rolling out to the right and he's got guys chasing them all over. Throws over the middle to Anthony Aguirre.

Hauled in for a first down at the 41 yard line. I could have sworn Paul that the quarterback Page went past the line of scrimmage. He didn't. I thought there might have been offensive linemen downfield, but they were behind the line of scrimmage as well. Down very heads up play.

And you know what? That was made By Paxton Page. He did that being able to scramble out of trouble. Looked like he was going to get sacked. He was able to buy time and find a receiver.

Mead has two deep safeties playing back and they're all white uniforms past and Paige arms extended, takes the snap, plenty of pressure. Throws deep to Talarico along the right sideline and he just overshot him by a yard. Oh, now we've got a hanky came in late right at the feet of number 63 for me so I wonder what that is all about.

Kind of a weird spot on the field. Yeah and it was after the play with the pass was thrown legal man downfield. Okay, well there you go. He had an offensive line two times in a row to be honest they had an off of they about five of them that were past the line of scrimmage and I think the ME coaching staff may have chewed this official on this side and guess what he saw.

He called a. With the next play it wouldn't have mattered. I mean it's only a five yard penalty but Paul, are you surprised that Ferris continues to throw the way they are on this drive all they need to do is melt the clock. Well but I mean you almost had a big play there that would have been a 40 yard game. Yeah, they have guys open because me trying to stop the run.

Right. So I'd like when you kind of go against the grain that was now you got legal side substitution. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11. Wait a minute. 2, 4, 6,8, 10, 11.

Far side ref as a man just came in off the sideline. Yeah, but they only had 10 players. Yeah, I thought so too. So you can't punish them for. For a substitution when you got 11 guys on the field.

Six, eight, 10, you got 11 guys. How's that a legal substitution? I'd pick the hanky up. I think that guy over eager was a little. Yeah, or maybe it's a sideline warning again and this would have been this will be the second one which will be a penalty.

Ferris already had one in the first half Waiting on the referees on the far side of the field of the 35 yard line. They're talking to Mlik Roberson and the rest of the Ferris staff about that. Obviously the staff are confused. They want to know what's going on. Yeah, I'm confused.

I'm trying to figure this out. I don't know why you're calling on a penalty. That'll be five yards. That's their second one. So that's a five yard penalty.

Well that guy needs to toughen up Buttercup. I mean seriously, you know, fourth quarter man, come on. Five minutes left. You know and that's. Sometimes they get a little bit bigger than the game and that bothers me.

You tell them. Sorry. All right, 5:20 to go and you know what you do? You turn around, go Coach, back up. You tell them, seriously, just back up.

I need you to get out of the way. I'll give you an example. When I was doing football we had a game up in Colville and I had a big offensive line coach kept getting in my way. I trucked him on an 80 yard run. I ran right over and.

Get out of the way dude. And that's why you are the great Paul Sorensen. But I was in shape then. I can't do that now. First down and 20 for.

That's a pass interference action Page throw the middle. It was tipped nearly intercepted twice but that was going to be PI on one of the Mead defenders. I'll tell you what. Yeah, that was too bad. He just got there actually you know who that was.

That's why he's cramping up. That was Skyler Harkness playing linebacker. And so what happened is he jumped the route but he went through the receiver. That'll be a pass interference. That's a biggie because look what they were looking at.

First and 20. Waiting on the referees here at the 30. Now it's going to be first and 10 because I don't think in high school or first and five it's an automatic first down. It's a weird deal and you know everybody else that'll be an automatic first down in college and the pros here it's just. It's a 15 yard penalty.

They were back behind the stakes. It was a 20 yard to gain. So now it's first and five. All right, the chain gang on the far side. No, they should move it should be first and five.

Chain gang on the far side of the field is marking this one at the 46 yard line. Ferris on their own 46 on the left side of the 50. They lead seven to three on top of me here with five seconds 17 to go. Like Paul said it is going to be first and five here for Paxton Page the senior right handed quarterback and the rest of the Ferris offense they turn in hand to Cruise Wheeler defense there to meet him.

Maybe a gain of one on the play. They push him back. That'll take us down inside five minutes and see. And that's where now all of a sudden, how big a penalty is that? Because you're probably going to have to give the ball back.

You know, Greg, from the standpoint that basically they're going to have a tough time converting 20 yards, not only are you giving 15 freebies, nothing wrong with aggressive play. Sometimes you get caught. I have no problem with the effort on that thing. But that was still a very big break for. For Ferris.

All right, give him a gain, a one on the play before they put back. What are we doing now? They're, I think, trying to reset the clock. If that's some clock issues tonight, I don't think that clock was. It's down to 13 and they're, you know, there's the line of scrimmage.

It wasn't reset. And there's been a lot of conversations going on here, you know, between the guys and the stripes. Good. I like the communication. Well, it's week one for everyone.

For everyone. I agree. Including us. If you just saw the pregame, trying to get this stuff coordinated. Normally I just show up because Weir's here and he handles everything.

And, you know, being the diva that you are, I've got to do it now. So it's. This could. I'm surprised that the equipment didn't blow up. Thank goodness Steve Pry back in the booth is keeping us on us because holy smokes.

With me at the helm, we're in trouble. What a fun year to embark upon we have together. Looking forward to this, man. Hey, this is cool. I.

Second down and four here for Ferris. And as they get back to the line of scrimmage, looks like we have some referees blowing the play dead. Well, no, because the goose. Goofy. The goofy sideline marker guys were moving the.

Moving the thing and they screwed it up. They've got to move it back. It's got to go back. Guys. We have a climactic game here.

We're coming to the. We're coming to the climb, and it's preaching to a halt. We just ran into a brick wall. So they're, you know. Yeah, they messed up the.

They messed up the sticks. It's. It's carnage out here, folks. Just when the game was getting to its apex. Oh, man, what a tease.

Yeah, it's okay. You know, I will say this as an official, you make mistakes. We are human. Of course, we get chewed a lot. See, they've got to go back.

Remember, it was second and five, so they've got to rewind. And then they're moving it again. Well, because they had it wrong. They should have marked it. They should have moved the darn thing.

It's second and five, knuckleheads, not second in 12. Like they had it. Second down and five for Ferris here. They lead seven to three with 434 to go. I'm willing to bet there's going to be some discussion afterwards with this crew on how to kind of keep their composure.

Now, what is happening? Now the referees are coming together again after he'd had the sticks reset and then the linemen for both teams were down. The Mead student section is making fun of the refs. Well, they should. We're making fun of the refs, too.

In fact, they have to move it back. It's second and five, guys. Thank you. There you go. So, dude, that was throwing the flags for the sideline warning.

Got it figured out over there. Nice job. All right, second and five, here we go. They do not get player of the week, by the way. I'll just throw that out there, okay.

All right, Ferris here. Second down and five on their own 46 yard line. They gotta get over to the Mead 49 across the 50. Paxton page out of the gun, both linebackers blitz flags come in from the far side and they blow the play dead again. That's.

That's not even the player's fault at this point. No, it's not. Oh, man. It's not. It's not.

So now the good News, it'll be second and 10. And if we'd have just kept the sticks where they were, we'd have been in the same boat. But you've had clock issues, you've had sideline marker issues, you've had sideline warning issues. There's no flow, there's no kind of pace to this game right now. So again, all three, both teams have to be in the mix and the guys in the stripes have to be in the mix.

They all have to be on the same page. All right, here we go again. Second down and a long nine here for Ferris. They've now been back, moved back to their own 41 yard line. This game is completely stalled out with 427 to go.

And they have to fix a clock too because they ran the clock during the penalty. So they're resetting the clock. And trust me, I, I've been in situations like that as an official and when it goes, it goes quickly. It's not fun because you're mad, you're grumpy, you want to do a great job as well. There's high integrity, you know, on that side.

And when, when things go sideways, it's tough, it's tough to stop. Okay? The referee's now waving their right arms in a circular motion saying let's get this show back on the road. 4:30 to go. Two linebackers looking like they're gonna jump for Mead as Paxton Page moves back into the shotgun.

Two receivers split to his left, two from his right, Ferris from their own 41 yard line, they lead seven to three with 4:18 to go. Both linebackers coming. They run the option. It's Cruz Wheeler down the left side. He gets back between the ashes.

He's got a gain of 15 yards for a first down and is to the Mead 46 yard line to move the chance. And what happened is me basically guess themselves right out of that play. They brought the blitz. Nice check by the offense for Ferris. They saw the blitz, they went wide, got outside.

Great block by the left tackle as he sealed the end there. Excellent stock block by the wide receiver and he and Wheeler had plenty of running room there. First down, Saxons clocks down to four minutes and running and that's a big play. I keep running the football here because you don't need to score, you just need to burn clock. Get first downs.

Ferris on top of Mead. Seven to three, they're on offense and it looks like Mead has linebackers coming up. The blitz again. Paxton Page looks to the near side to his new head coach, Malik Roberson. By the way, the shotgun stance here, his debut.

Yep. And oh, nice job by pulling the fakes, a hand runs to the near side. It's play action. Bounds up to the 43 yard line, gets a five yard gain, but gets out of bounds to stop the clock. And that is a senior.

He needs to know that you just go and you just slide, stay in bounds, slide, you're not going to get tackled. He ran himself right out of bounds there. Good block by the receiver to come back in and clean up the, the strong safety, safety there. But you know, that's, that's another 30. So we're talking a minute we'd be inside of, you know, probably 2:30 to go here and now Mead's gonna start using our timeouts.

All right, second down and six for Ferris. Three minutes and 36 seconds to go. Ferris on offense. They lead seven to three. Mead has four down linemen, three linebackers in the box ready to jump.

Two receivers out to each side for Ferris with Cruz Wheeler in the backfield. 336 to go. Paxton Page takes the snap, runs the option again it's Cruz Wheeler gets between the hashes, stays on his feet, beats a couple of linebackers. He's inside the 40, got down to 38 yard line. That's.

I think he might be about half a yard short, but that was a great pitch. You know what they're doing? They're getting away from that inside rush because they've had a tough time moving, moving meat off the ball. Where are they going? Outside.

Who suggested that early in this game? I think you did call. See, that's that Ferris Saxon wavelength. That's why he's the great Paul Sorenson, folks. All right, third down and one to go.

You're kind two deep safeties back for me. I don't know why they're doing that, because Ferris is about to run this ball for the biggest first down of the game so far. This is two down territory. They are not going to punt. They don't need to just run it.

You know what I do? I would fake, I do an RPO right here. I'd fake it to the wide side and let, let Paxton Page just take it around the right side. He'll get a first down. All right, Paige out of the shotgun, has his hands high up, hands it off to Bruce Wheeler, puts his shoulder first, moves the pile forward to the right for a first down.

That is the biggest first down brought to you by Damon Orthodontics of the game so far. That'll move the chains 240 to go. And things are starting to look really good here for ferris. They lead 7:3 and they've got it on a new first down with 2:40 left. And Keith Stamp's gonna have to start taking some timeouts now because, you know, basically, basically he's got to stop the clock.

And so if you're Ferris, you're thinking you just want three or four yards on every down you're gonna. This is four down territory you're burning clock. This is exactly what you want. But why, you know, basically Mead's gotta take timeouts and stop the clock now. New first down Ferris after the game there from Cruz.

Wheeler is down to the Mead 35 yard line on the right side of the 50. Here comes the first down and 10 snap handoff. The cruise wheeler took it straight up the middle, got a gain of about two or three yards and a timeout for me to stop the clock. 211. Yep, that's smart.

Well, welcome back here. 215 to go, two timeouts left for the Meat Panthers. Ferris is up 7 to 3. It's been a defensive struggle and I take my hat off for both of these defenses. Mead has only given up seven points.

That's usually good enough to win a football game. Fortunately Ferris is better. They've only given up three and they had their back against the wall. Pretty much that first quarter and a half where me just couldn't put the football in the end zone and get any points. And so we've got a little bit of a slobber knocker, a little defensive battle going here and the Saxons have really impressed.

In my opinion this game is not done quite yet. But one more first down for the Ferris Saxons on offense would put this thing in the coffin. Ferris 7 made 3 with 215 to go. Ferris is on offense on the mead. What is it?

35 yard line. It is second down and nine. They turn the handoff to Cruise Wheeler. He's been their best player of the game so far. Gets back to a little past the line of scrimmage, maybe a gain of 2.

Dragged back down by a defensive lineman. Mead will take another timeout, stop the clock at 209 and bring up a really big third down at about six. Actually, I think that was Keone Lindsay. They're giving Wheeler a little bit of a blow here. And so one time out left.

But you know, again, I think what you do is, you know, you just keep running the football. It's third down and probably along seven, you know. Yeah, right in the that range. You get three, four yards here, you give yourself a chance of fourth down. If not, you know, they burned all their timeouts.

Mead only has one timeout left and they'll take it right after this, you know, this snap here. So they'll be done with their timeouts. And if Ferris can figure out a way to get six and a half seven yards, this ball game's over. We're having even more clock issues. We like to hear them talking and going.

Clock, guys. Hey. And it's the first game for him too, so it's all. We're all in the same boat. It's, it's just fun to be out here.

It's great to have the commentary from the stands, the peanut gallery that Greg, Greg and I are sitting in and all the folks that are out here making this thing happen. But you know what? It's Friday night, Spokane, and we're playing high school sports. They had a soccer game beforehand, I think between Mead, Mt. Spokane, Mead, Mead Fair is 3 nil.

Is that what it was? Oh, wow, game for me. Yeah, really good game for me. Great job by the goalkeeper on the shutout. That's hard to do.

All right, this is the biggest play of the game so far here. Seven to three here. Ferris on top of Mead, Ferris on offense. Third down and seven. If they can get a first down, that will end this game.

Paxton Page runs the option plate. Dealer stays on his feet inside the 25 and that is gonna do it. That is the biggest Damon orthodontics first at of the game so far. No more timeouts left in the box for me. Boy, oh boy.

Ferris is going to start to run this one out. Now you can take a knee. You, you do that because you have one timeout left and I think they just took it. So now you're down to no timeouts left and, and now you can just basically the best formation in, in football. Is a victory formation here.

And I'll tell you right now, how about Malik Roberson? His first game as a head coach, he comes out, knocks off the page. Panthers Keith Stamp. You know, probably wanted to have that, that result reversed. But this has been a good football game.

It's been a defensive struggle. It's been ugly at times on multiple areas. But I give this coaching staff for the Saxons a lot of kudos. So Mead is about to lose game one of the Keith Stamps era, but a good effort regardless. Seven to three Saxons as they get ready to take a knee will ultimately be the score.

Paul, where we go next week? Man, we get to go U high. So Larry and I are going to go out there and check out their facilities on Wednesday. You know, Brandon d' Arman's a good man. He's the athletic director out there looking forward.

Usually we do games at Albie. As you know, Albie is no longer in the mix anymore. They're going to build a new facility downtown, right next to the Spokane arena. And that new. Whatever the heck they call that, that big shoe building.

What, what is that, like the pledge that I forgot. They've got some name, starts with a P, but. But anyway, it'll be fun. So we're gonna go out there next week. That sounds fun.

All right, two minutes to go. Ferris on top, seven to three. And they're not in victory formation yet. Actually, they're coming out in what looks like a regular offensive formation for Paxton Page. Two receivers split out to each side.

Turns and gives to Cruz Wheeler. That ball is on the ground at the 25 yard line. Mead says they have it and they do. Widen. Pick the knee.

Oh, Mead's gonna have the chance. From their own 25. Are you kidding me? Oh, man. Paul Sorensen, his mouth is hanging on the floor.

Folks, the game's over. You had won the game. All you had to do is take a knee. Why are you handing the ball off? Did they not see the butt fumble from the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles back in the day when Herm Edwards picked the ball off because the quarterback ran into the center.

The ball squirted to the left, he scooped it up, went 40 yards for a touchdown. The game was over. They had 30 seconds. Seconds left. All I do is take a knee.

How do you. How do you make that mistake? All right, so folks, this one is not done yet. Mead takes the field again on offense after the gift. They are down 7 to 3 to Ferris from their own 25 yard line.

No timeouts. They've got 75 yards to go and 155 to do it. Low snap here. Danielson swings it out to the far side to Harkness, he's still on his feet past the 30. He did not get out of bounds and a gain of six.

They got to go fast. They got. You gotta go real fast because this clock's gonna continue and that's what you do if you're Ferris, you're gonna bracket them on the sidelines and keep them in bounds. Uh oh, we gotta stop at you for some reason. What is that?

Well that might be Harkness again with the cramping stuff. Where? No, now in the, in the college, he's on the far sidelines on the 30 yard line over there. Oh yeah, in college in the Pros they'll run 10 seconds off the clock if you have no timeouts left. Remember the fast tempo offenses, you would have guys that would go down, you know, like they're cramping.

They weren't, they were just trying to stop the clock. Right. So they put rules in to make sure that that didn't happen. But I'm just absolutely flabbergasted that Ferris didn't take a knee and end the game. Okay, so what's happening here is the best running back on Mead, Skyler Harkness is down at his own 30 yard line on second and five.

They're stretching out his hammy in his calves. He says that what he's doing here and there's no reason not to believe him, he says he's cramping up and he has been the entire second half. What effectively is happening here is he's giving me to time to drop another play while stopping the clock at 140 and the clock should be running. So as soon as he gets off the field and he's cramping, I have no. Oh, he is.

No question in my mind that yes. That he's dealing with cramping issues but, but the high school level's got to change this rule. If that's the case it should be. Right now it's at 140, should be 130 and the clock goes right now there should be a 10 second runoff. Yeah, he's, he's having, he's having issues.

All right, 1:40 to go, me down seven to three. Now from their own 30 yard line after the gain of five, all of a sudden they've got a chance to win this thing in a Hail Mary fashion. Danielson back out under center here, now goes back into the Shotgun. Standing at the 25. Three receivers split to his left.

Still only one deep safety back for the Ferris defense. There you go. Danielson steps up in the pocket and down he goes. That was 33. Doing a great job.

Get second sack of the night for Davion Walms. Yeah, he's. He. That was a great. He just beat the tackle.

Just showed great, you know, great speed around the outside. And he's been all over the field. Couple of tackles, a couple of tackle for losses, and now two sacks. All of a sudden it's third down and 11 and clock ticks down to 110. This is going to be a big play.

Only four down lineman. Danielson throws deep down the right sideline into coverage. He's got a man. He overshot Max Workman. Now you got fourth down, you got fourth and 10.

So ball game right here. And. And if you're Ferris, this is a great teaching moment. This is a moment that you go back on offense again. Guys, my bad.

Here's what we're going to do from now on. We're going to practice a victory formation. We're going to snap the ball back. You're going to have two running backs right around you. You're going to take about two or three seconds and go right to a knee.

We're not going to hand the ball off. We're not going to fumble it underneath. We're just going to do that and we're going to win the game. And that's. That's how you get better as a program.

All right? As long as you don't lose the game and give up, you know, a huge player with 62 seconds left. This is do or die for me. Play the sticks. Two seconds left.

It is fourth down and 11 for the Panthers. If they want to keep this game alive, they got to get a first down. Snake snap to Danielson. Plenty of time. Throws over the middle off the hands of Braun.

Incomplete. And Ferris will get the ball back. I don't want to say it's over, Paul, because we thought it was already over. But Farris should go to a knee now and win there. Now snap it back with the quarterback.

Run around for a little bit, burn some time, but man, oh, boy, you know, I mean, that's the nice thing about high school football. It's things, you know, I've been doing this a long time, and there's still things that don't surprise me, that surprised me, but those are all things. You practice. You practice that, and so that'll be something that the coaching staff will put in their practice schedule next week. You watch.

All right, so Ferris now hopefully has learned their lesson. It should be close to something resembling victory formation. They lead 7 to 3 with 59 seconds to go. They're down on the right side of the 50 on at the meat 25 yard line. There's the snap.

The page goes down to his right knee and that will start the process. There you go. Well, the clock's not. They weren't running the clock, so let's do this again. The clock guy has not had a good day.

No, sorry. It's all right. But anyway, hey, kudos to the Fair Saxons and, and Malik Roberson in his inaugural game, he steps up, up. He's 1 and O on the season. And the Saxons, this is a very good defense.

And just think about this. Your first team all GSL wide receiver didn't even play Ola Joe Egby. Yeah, he was on the sidelines in street clothes. So can you imagine? They get him back, they're going to be pretty good.

Yeah, I'm impressed. This might be the surprise of the fall this year. All right, so one more need to be taken here for the Ferris Saxons. Paxton Page comes back out with his favorite target tonight. Cruz Wheeler flanked to his left, puts his hands up ready to receive.

And that was smart. You know you've got a guy at 6 5, they're in press coverage. They were trying to stop the run so that everybody packed between the tackles. Very good offensive call. And you let your quarterback.

You know who I really like? I think he's done a nice job. Paxton Page. He threw an interception earlier. He was grumpy with himself, but he came back and threw that ball where he needed to.

Allowed his 65 receiver, Aguirre to go up and make that catch. And that was the only touchdown of the game. But I'll tell you right now, hats off to the Ferris defense. In my opinion, they were the difference maker in this game. The improvement that they've had from last spring to this fall, the first game in the Malik Roberson's era, they're one and oh on the season, unfortunately for me, they dropped 0 and 1 and that's a tough loss.

Well, welcome back. Final score Ferris moves to 10 on the season with a 73 victory. Meade drops to 01 here in the fall. And you know that was a, that was a tough loss for the Meade Panthers. Their defense played very well.

Well, I completely agree. We go with the fair Saxon defense just from the standpoint that they shut, you know, they basically kept me out of the end zone for, you know, for touchdowns. They gave up a field goal but they had plenty of opportunities. They gave up a couple of big plays on some runs.

There were some opportunities for me to take advantage of some shots downfield that you had some receivers open they just couldn't connect. Kudos to the fairsaxons defense. First time we've actually played football here in the fall. Believe it or not, this, this wonderful property has been here for a little while. They played football on it this last spring. But what a nice experience it was to have fans in the stands on both sides. And you know, Paul, you and I broadcast separately and now together a lot of college and high school football over the years.

A lot of the times you start out the season with a dud. This was a pretty good game actually. I love defensive games. You know, we can make fun and kind of roll our eyes, but anytime you have a Defensive struggle, which is what this was. You know, the offenses need to get better, but the defenses really stepped up.

They made plays, they had turnovers, they had sacks, tackle for losses. You know, there was opportunity for plays to be made, but the defenses were the teams that made it tonight and kind of neat to see, to be honest. At least it wasn't a block. This is a wonderful game. Again, in case you're just flicking on the radio.

Seven to three, our final score tonight. The fair Saxons come down off the South Hill and take down a pretty good new Mead Panthers team under the watchful eye of Keith Stamps, who came over from 16 years as the head coach of Deer Park High School. Paul, our whole crew is back next week and we're going out to the Valley. Yep. Little.

Little University against Cheney. Cheney is going to be a good ball club. They lost a couple excellent seniors last. Last spring, but they're going to be competitive university. Could be fun to see them.

We haven't seen you high in a while and I'm looking forward to working that game out there. I think you'll enjoy the ambiance. It'll be kind of cool. What kind of game do you think we can expect between those two programs? That's a good question.
