This is probably the last chance for Prep to have top notch competition before we get to districts and regionals and state. Mount Spokane still has U High to go, but this is a huge game here this evening. Yeah, absolutely. And I we would be remiss in counting out Ferris at some point but obviously this is this game's going to go a long way to decide who wins the GSL title this year. Prep has already defeated Uhai.

Uhai still has to play Mt. Spokane this year, so that's going to be an interesting matchup later this year. This is going to be because both these teams are Tall and long and athletic. They're really pretty similar, I think. Yeah, I think you're right.

I think maybe, maybe Gonzaga Prep has a little bit of an edge inside and maybe Mel Spokane has an edge outside. So it's going to be a really good challenge. Obviously Mount Spokane is going to lean on Maverick Sanders a lot. He's their top player returning first team all league player. Gonzaga Prep loves to work it inside to Jamil Miller.

The kid can jump out of the building. And Matty McIntyre, the coach has nothing but praise for for the steps he's taken from his junior to senior year. The end of the girls game is still going on here. We've got a minute 14 remaining in the girls game. The Mount Spokane girls lead Gonzaga Prep 3528 and they're shooting free throws at this point in time with Abby pretty on the line.

All right, so both these teams have played really strong non conference schedules. They tried to get a number of tough games. Gonzaga Prep just lost a team out of Texas. That guest was very tall and talented. Did you see that game?

I did not. I was covering another game that night. But. But yeah, the team from, from Houston came up here, St. Thomas and beat Gonzaga Prep and U High on back to back night.

So I gotta imagine they're a pretty good team. But. But you're right, these teams have post season aspirations, right? Both teams figure to play prominently at Tacoma later on this year. And I think that building up that non conference schedule gives them access, gives them exposure to tougher opponents and gets them ready for postseason.

All right, so These are the two top teams as far as 4A and 3A go at this point in time. On the 3A side we know U High is going to be Mount Spokane's greatest challenge. On the 4A side is LC, probably the number two team in Spokane at this point. Number two, 2A. You know, I think, you know, the forays obviously with only three of them in league right now makes it kind of difficult to gauge.

Right. Especially since everything's got to go through the MCC once the District 8 playoffs start. Anyway, I got to think that the next time they do reclassifications, we're going to see a little bit more balance between the 4A and 3A lakes here in town. 36:30. Mount Spokane down to 43 seconds remaining.

There's a timeout on the floor. We have not talked 2A yet. And on the 2A side you've got the Pullman boys number 2 and the West Valley boys in at number 10. Both really good teams. Pullman's a fantastic team.

We talked about Mount Spokane being able to go inside outside. Pullman's the same way. And Jaden Brown, definitely a two way player of the year candidate. He's, he's scoring over 25 points a game and I got to imagine that, that he played four quarters every night. He'd score over 30 points a game.

And they've got tremendous role players. Champions. The football player, Tanner Barber, both really good, solid complementary pieces. West Valley, they've got three or four guys that can score it and I think both of them are going to make noise in state as well. Dave Nichols of the Spokesman Review here.

Kind of odd, only one girls team in the GSL in the top 10 in the state on any classification. That's the Mead girls in 3A at number 8. Is Spokane not getting respect statewide or are we a little down this year? I think the league is a little down this year and we're kind of seeing it in this game we're watching here tonight, right? Gonzaga Prep comes in at 2 and oh in league 8 and 3 overall and they're just about to lose to a team that's five and six coming into this.

And not to knock Mount Spokane because they've got some good parts here and obviously will be better next year. Some of these players get another year of experience. We just don't, we don't have the breakaway, you know, teams, the upper echelon teams other than the Mead girls. The Mead girls are very good, but even they rely on three freshmen this year and I would say no big stars either, which we have seen a lot of in recent years with the exception maybe of Taron Gardner. Now there are some future stars right on these teams, but at this point in time, I think Gardner is probably the only one that is really a sure shot.

Division one, you know, that's a junior, a senior Division one. There are, there are no Hull Twins in the league, no Anton Watson on the boys side this year, unfortunately. You know, we were, we were very fortunate in the last five, six years with GSL to see some of these not only Division 1 players, but Division 1 players that went on to Power 5 schools, and not just Power 5 schools, but top five schools as well.

So we got it, we got a little bit of complacent, a little bit, you know, jaded when it comes to, to stars in the GSL and this, we might be down a little bit this year, but like you said, there's a lot of young talent and I think that the league's going to rebound here pretty quick. 11 seconds remaining in this game. Mount Spokane shooting 37 to 30. They have the lead at this point in time. One final question for you.

What does this game come down to tonight in your opinion? I think whoever shoots it better from the outside is going to have an advantage tonight. Like I said, both teams want to work it inside to Sanders and the Miller. If somebody gets hot from the outside, we could see an interesting ball game. All right.

Spokane 9 and oh when they get season 60 points or more in a game. Gonzaga Prep is 8 and 1 when they get 60 points or more in a game. We're going to see some really good talent here this evening. Paul Sorensen and there you go. Yes, these two teams don't like each other.

It's good competition. They're both top 10 teams in their brackets in the 3A and the 4A. And you know, I think this is going to be a whale of a game. I think it's going to be very physical and it's going to be who's going to, you know, make take advantage of turnovers, who's going to turn the other team over and be able to, you know, basically defend the three.

These are the only two unbeaten teams in the three 3A 4A ranks. Mount Spokane, Gonzaga Prep, both 2Zero University, Ferris, Lewis and Clark, Mead, North Central Valley are all at 1 1. Ridgeline and Cheney are at O and 2 going into games this evening. 4A 3A tonight Central Valley is playing at Cheney, Lewis and Clark is at Ferris. North Central is hosting Mead and Ridgeline is at University this evening.

That's on the 3A 4A side will pass along finals if and as we get them on the two A side tonight. Shadow park is playing at Pullman, Clarkston is visiting Rogers and East Valley hosting West Valley in a big battle out in the Valley on both boys and girls play we mentioned with Dave Nichols on the two way side. Pullman is number two. West Valley is number 10 in the boys top 10 rankings. This is Associated Press Mount Spokane number three University receives votes, but they're not in the top 10.

And Gonzaga Prep number six on the 4A side going into play here this weekend. Well, that's important too at the end of the season when seating comes into play. And that really makes a difference, you know, in playoff time as well. So you keep winning good things happen. You keep those those ratings strong and that bodes well in the postseason.

So that's the situation both in the schedule as well as the standings. The captains are meeting in the center of the floor and in the state rankings as well. As we head into play here this evening. All right, welcome back Here to Gonzaga Prep High school getting ready for the start of this ball game. Gonzaga Prep taking on Mount Spokane. Both these teams with some star power on the floor. Jamil Miller is averaging almost 19 points a game. He has scored in double figures in every game this year for Gonzaga Prep.

He's very athletic, 6, 6 bouncy forward, but they also have some good bit players around him as Henry Sandberg is averaging about 12 points per ballgame and Jackson Floyd averages 10 points a game. Chase is around nine points a game. So they've got a number of guys who can score and as we said earlier, they want to play faster, Paul, because they're 8 and 1 when they score 60 points or more. So that means what? They've only been held under 64 times this year and they have six players over six four.

They've got some height as well, so if they're not hitting their outside shot, they can also work it inside Larry. And they've got some guys in the paint in, in Verrett Christie, you know, and sandberg and Kyle Co. That are pretty darn good for Mt. Spokane. Maverick Sanders is their top scorer at 15 a game, but he's not the only scoring threat they have.

Andrew Raymond is averaging better than 12 a game. Ryan Lafferty is averaging nearly 12 a game. They've got a really good shooter in Nalu Vargas as well. So this is a Mount Spokane team that also has a lot of firepower and they also want, I think this is going to be just a whale of a guy. Well, they like to get up and down the court.

They want to run, they want to transition. You turn the ball over and if you defend the basket, they'll kick it out. Hit threes all day long. I had them in fall ball and needless to say, I was not in basketball shape and nearly blew out a lung trying to keep up with these guys because they can hustle and I can't. And so here this evening, this is really the last major contest Gonzaga Prep has on their schedule this year. Then that's not to say that they're just going to be able to phone in the results from the rest of their games. But they would have to play less than their best and the opposition would have to play a very good game, I think. And I'm talking about the Ferris's, the Meads, the North Centrals, CB, etc. They've beaten u High Already and they're only meeting against U High and this will be the only meeting this year against Mount Spokane.

And Mount Spokane has U High coming up later in the year. So they are going to have to play their best game to win that ball game. But like prep, outside of that, they can get away with playing less than their best. Not to say they don't have to play well, but they don't have to play their best in order to win a game. Both these teams will have to play their best game tonight.

Well, I think you have two coaches, David Wagonblast for Mount Spokane and Manny McIntyre, that understand what this game's all about. They don't. They're not putting any, any extra pressure on their team, but there's pressure on these two teams because they know the winner of this really has the foothold into the, into the GSL championship and, and the number one seed out of, you know, out of this, this division, which is a big deal because basketball and Spokane and both the men's and women's side, when you look at what they do on the state level, it's pretty impressive and you want to be able to be that number one seed coming out.

Yeah, this is in all likelihood Mount Spring Spokane will be. Well, they are. UHI will be the number one seed on the 3A side. Prep will be the number one. Ace number one on the 4A side in all likelihood.

But this decides the GSA championship tonight. This is the only time these teams play. There's just a nine game round robin with a. Even if you play a team twice, only one game counts to the conference championship. So the winner of this is going to be in the driver's seat to win that overall GSL title.

We got a pack crowd in the. Everybody's here. This has kind of been an anticipated game. Dave Nichols from the Spokesman Review talked about that and you can tell because you had to park out in the dingle weeds to, you know, to get in here. And I got here a little bit earlier than you did, so I was lucky to find some parking.

But I love games like this. It's going to be a rankist crowd, will be a fun crowd. It'll be a loud crowd and I think that'll make a difference in this ballgame. Yeah, I got here an hour and 15 or so minutes ago and yeah, that was. You were, you were parking a little further away.

Lafferty of the top drives, throws it into the corner for Vargas and threw it out of bounds. The turnover on Mount Spokane. And Prep will get the ball with a one point lead. Yeah, good defense so far. Both teams are having to work for their baskets.

Sandberg, guarded by Vargas, gets a screen, starts to his right. Cut off by Sanders. Help defense. Sandberg drives to the goal. Shot block.

Out of bounds. It goes off of Henry Sandberg, who was lying out of bounds. The ball was blocked by Maverick. Sanders and the ball hit Sandberg as He was lying out of bounds. And so the shot blocked by Mt.

Spokane, but would have been out of bounds off Mt. Spokanex if Sandberg was laying out of bounds and it came down and hit him off a screen. Lafferty drives to his right, gives it away to Vargas in the corner. He'll drive into the lane and kicks it out to Lafferty on the left wing. Now Lafferty almost falls down, starts into the lane, pulls up little eight footer, rolls off the iron.

But a beautiful pass by Lafferty to Williams for his first basket of the game to make this 40 to 36. That may well be our play of the game. That was after wait and see here. And that was great vision by Lafferty because they're starting to double him because he's been the offense here in the second half. He's got six rebounds, a couple of assists and then all the points.

As you mentioned, he had 11 of those in the third quarter and he has, he has several more here in the fourth. But that was just great vision. He saw Williams cutting from the wing, he came in him right in the hands. He was able to lay it up. And that two score difference could be a biggie here with 105 to go in the game.

And Swanson goes to the line for two shots. And if as an official, that's an easy foul to call, Larry, because it's right out in the open and if he's slapping him across the arm like that, that's going to get called every time. So Swanson for two. The first is good plus it stops the clock. Stops the clock and gives him two free points here instead of having to earn it.

10 seconds. This game has not disappointed tonight. It has been frenetic to say the least. Up and down, great defense. I love seeing teams play great defense.

And all you have to do is look at Williams. He split open his chin. He's got a big band aid on it. He had blood all over the place. I mean, guys are diving on the floor, you're getting blocked shots, you know, collisions underneath the basket.

These are two teams that do not want to lose. And you can see why. They're two of the best teams in the Greater Spokane League and also in the state of Washington. Well, Mount Spokane's defense, they had allowed 43 points or less in each of the last four games. They've only allowed 38 in this ball game.

Defense by both squads have been good, but obviously Mount Spokane maybe just a little bit better tonight because of the scores. What we have right now, even if they let him get to 43, they still win the game by one because they've got 44. And so I give prep credit. I thought their defense was very good as well. But in my opinion, Ryan Lafferty here in the second half has been the difference maker.

That shot that Sanders made to finally get him on the board in the second half was huge. Those two guys have really been the. The guys have been carrying the water from Aspel can here tonight. Absolutely. We'll have our play of the game.

All Right. So early on, Prep had a 3, 2 lead in this game. They upped the lead to 52 on a basket by Chance Jackson Floyd. Six straight points by Mount Spokane gave them an 8, 5 lead. And then a basket by Prep cut that lead to 87 at the end of the first quarter, Mount Spokane got the lead to 5 at 12 to 7 and at 14 to 9, then to 7 at 18 to 11.

But Jamil Miller scored the last three points of the first half of play and Gonzaga Prep cut that lead to 18 to 14. So they scored the last three points of the second quarter and then they scored the first six points, eight points rather of the third quarter. So ended up being an 11 nothing Gonzaga Prep run. And the Bullpups had their biggest lead of the game at 22 to 18 on a basket by Henry Sandberg. Mount Spokane ran six straight points.

They retook the lead at 24:22. We were tied at 24. Tied at 26. Ryan Laverty three pointer near the end of the third quarter gave Mount Spoke Spokane a 29:26 lead they would not relinquish. And that was the score at the end of three.

Mount Spokane scored the first basket of the fourth quarter. Prep came back, kept the lead to three. A three pointer by Nalu Vargas made it a 3428 game. They made it 36 28. Then Gonzaga Prep came back.

They got a four point play on a two point basket, then a missed free throw and a rebound basket to cut the lead in half, 36:32. They then kept the lead to 38:36.
