As we had a little confusion we initially supposed to the 7 o' clock boys game. I was told the boys game was at 5:30 and we show up.

We found out the girls games at 5:30 so that's okay. This would be a good game between the ladies anyway so so I like it. We've got a pair of two and five teams doing battle in the GSL as Matt Spokane plays Lewis and Clark here this evening. LC overall on the year 9 and 10. Mount Spokane overall on the air 7 and 11 coming into this ballgame here this evening.

This portion of our pregame show is being brought to you by Pepper Tree Hotels. All right, so early on Mount Spokane had some success this year. They defeated Post Falls and Richland. But then they lost four straight games, came back in what's been kind of a streaky year for them. Then they won three out of four.

Then they lost three straight games and Then they won a game and now they've lost three out of their last four again. So this is a team that's kind of been up and down a little bit this year, but they have an outstanding player in Sloan Gardner, one of the best players in the GSL and coached by Jim Redmond, who is a longtime legendary coach in the GSL in his first year at Mount Spokane. And it was here where he was the legendary coach. Clark had a nice talk with Jim before the game and you know, he's fiery as ever and you know, he's just trying to change the culture a little bit. You know, on the ladies side out there, they have seven seniors on this team.

They're in games. They've just got to figure out a way, Larry, how to finish. And I think that's been the most frustrating thing for not only the, the Mt. Spokane girls, but the coaching staff as well. Yeah, they've lost their last two games against Ferris and University and in those two games they allowed 149 points.

So that's 74 now. That's a game you're not going to lose, win a game. Not too many games anyway when you give it up. 74, 75 points. And when he was coaching here at LC, his defense was really the thing that they were known for.

They ran a three quarter court press and they really got in there and played great defense, excellent transition, were able to hit the threes and they just closed people out. They wore people down defensively and I think that's something he's got to learn and express to his players. Lewis and Clark comes in with a 2 and 5 conference record, 910 overall on the year. They started out 13 but then won 6 out of their next 8 games and started to really play well. Then they now have lost four out of their last five, but they played some pretty good teams with that.

That four out of the last five losing to perhaps Central Valley and Ridgeline among the three of the four games they lost. Those are three of the teams to whom they lost, but their season has really been hurt because of injury. Acacia, Felix, Caleb who Lindsey Zimmerman, all would have started or at the very least played big roles off the bench for this team. All out for the year with various injuries at the start of the year. So they've been playing shorthanded and under a new coach in Sydney, Floriani, and she's done a pretty good job with this bunch considering half her team's injured.

Well, you can't take, you know, those kind of starters out. Look at Washington State. They lose three good players and makes a difference. I don't care who you are, what team you play for, if you lose quality players like you know, what you just mentioned, it's going to be tough for the other people to step up. Plus there's only two seniors on this team, so it's relatively a young team and that's where having the veteran starters coming back and stabilize that a little bit and make things and make that transition a little smoother.

They're just got to get that defensive thing straightened out. They've got to defend. They have to make it hard on Lewis and Clark in terms of taking shots and. And they have to make their own shots. They've had a lot of opportunities with opportunity, with open looks, and they just haven't been able to finish.

And they need to compete not one quarter or two or three, but the entire game. They've kind of had some issues as the game wears down where they're right there having a chance to win it, they just can't finish. Finishing is going to be a key today. All right. For Lewis and Clark, defense is what starts everything with this team because with all the injuries, they just don't have the depth and they don't have the offensive punch that they might have had if they had all those girls available play.

So their last five losses they've allowed 60 points or more. If they can keep teams under 60, they have a chance to win. But if you get over 60, they just don't have the offensive presence to be able to do that this season. And basically they get most of their points from three players and that would be Olivia Baird, Ruby Shaw and Sadie Pierce. And so, you know, only getting a good amount of points from three different players makes it hard to keep up in a scoring match.

A little eight or nine footer. Abbey Priddy gets her first basket of the game. And it's seven four now in favor of L. C. here comes Olivia Baird into the forecourt, the five and the five.

Junior guard feeds high post to Shaw at the top of the key. Shaw fakes a dribble handoff, drives, kicks it into the corner. Rhiannon Kilgore drives, bounce pass, Shaw in the lane. Seven footer rattles out no good. Tough luck shot.

And Weiss cleans the glass for Mount Spokane. Here comes Dakota Weiss into the four court, long lead up the right side. Gets it to Sloane, Gardner. She'll send it cross court on the left out of Wagon Blast. She'll skip it back across court to Weiss on the right.

As in this one, early on it was a good lead for Lewis and Clark as they scored the first seven points, or excuse me, the first seven points were scored by Ruby Shaw and they had a 7 to 2 lead in the game.

But after that it's been all Mount Spokane. Mount Spokane went on a 12 nothing run as they had back to back threes by Jocelyn Wagonblast that put them on top at 97 and then at 127 and they upped that lead to 147 before a three pointer by Pierce made it a 14 to 10 game. Then another basket, this one by Olivia Baird made it 14 to 12 before a Sloan Gardner hoop at the end of the first quarter gave Mt. Spokane a 16 to 12 lead after one. Matt Spokane scored the first five points of the second quarter of play, up their lead to nine before Sadie Pierce scored the first basket of the second quarter for LC to cut the lead to seven.

Four more points for Mt. Spokane with the last basket being a pretty rebound basket, made it a 25:14 ballgame. They up the lead to 28:14 on a slow yarder that would be the biggest lead of the first half. And then Mount Spokane outscored, or rather Elsie Mount scored Mount Spokane, I should say, 6 to 2 down the stretch to cut the lead to 10. It's 30 to 20 here at the intermission, but again, when we talked about keys to the game early on, I mentioned that LC is basically a three girl team.

Those three girls score the majority of their points and in their last five losses they've allowed 60 points or more to their opposition. Well, they've allowed 30 here in this ballgame because when you only have three people scoring, which is the case for LC here in this game, you just, you, you've got to have Points coming from a few more people, I think. Yeah, you do. And Moss Spokane, their keys were defense make their shots and and compete. And I think you've seen all three of those take shape here in the first half.

She was able to save the ball, but I think she was laying on the end line. That's. And you've got, you've got a player. I think Rubright's coming out. She got hit in the mouth and I said incorrectly that it was LC Ball.

It's Mount Spokane Ball with 4. 9 seconds remaining. And so now with a three point game here, they've got to try to get a steal on the inbounds or a five second violation. And you can't basically let them go deep because that'll lead up clock. So you've got to either make the play on the steal or commit a quick foul.

And you got to be careful. You can't make sure it's intentional. You can't found somebody before the ball comes in play or you're going to have an intentional foul there. And that's free throws plus the ball. That's not what you want to do.

All right, short change to the drum corps. They got 23 kids playing drums. I missed the guys in the, in the, in the stands. That's bigger than our band when I was in high school. This band has done a whale of a job all game long.

And so 46, 43, Mount Spokane with the lead. They have the ball in backcourt. Heck of a game these two teams have. Battle. They've gone after each other.

Now if you're lc, you've got to get the rebound. And if you have a timeout, you need to take it immediately. If you miss, that's not a bad thing because that starts the clock when they touch it. Here's the second shot for Priddy. That is up.

And they have outscored Mount Spokane here in the third quarter, fourth quarter 15 to 8. They ratcheted up with their their three quarter court press. They've done a really nice job of creating turnovers against Mt.

And for LC, if they have another timeout left, they will use it here. Let's see if she just misses. Here's the free throw. It is good. She hits them both so they can't get beaten now.

And LC will take a timeout. So now what you have to do is take your girl with your best arm and huck it and have her throw it into the front court. Hopefully you get it to somebody inside half court. You can get a 30 foot shot or somewhere thereabouts to tie this ballgame up. We'll see what happens.

All right, so Coach Floriani probably knows her personnel, I would think. Who's the softball player, who's the shortstop, who's the center fielder with the arm, the girl that's the quarterback in the flag football game in the PE class or whatever it happens to be. You get it to the girl with the best arm and let her throw the ball. And hopefully a girl that can catch is on the other end of it. We had our shortstop, who's also our quarterback, who's also our point guard.

That helped because he had an arm, he could throw it. So we'll see who inbounds here. And you also need to have your shooters. So your person with the best arm might be also your best shooter. So you need that person to catch the ball.

I would play one person all the way back right on your, on your line there. Don't let him go deep. That's what they're kind of doing here. Here's the inbounds pass and it's thrown away and it's grabbed at the top of the key by Gardner and that'll do it as LC could not. They didn't throw it deep.

They tried to inbound it around their own free throw line and that wouldn't have really done them any good had they gotten it, because then you basically you'd have had one dribble and a throw. So they elected to bring it in closer to their own basket. They didn't get the pass and that'll do it. All seven of their points were scored by Ruby Shaw. But back came out spokane. They scored 12 straight points. A three pointer by Jocelyn Wagonblast gave him a lead and another three pointer by Wagon Blast made it a 127 game. They upped the lead to 14 to 7.

Five straight points by LC cut it to at 14 to 12 and it was 16 12. At the end of the first quarter of play, Mt. Spokane up the lead to 9 at 21 to 12. Then after a mount spoke or an LC basket, Mt. Spokane took a 14 point lead as they had a 7 nothing run and a three pointer by Sloan.

Gardner gave him a 2814 lead, but that came LC. They outscored him 62 down the stretch. Cut the lead to 10 at 30 to 20 at the intermission. The lead swung back and forth between eight and 10 throughout the third quarter of play. A basket scored by Olivia Baird or actually Kevin, a free throw or a free throw scored by Olivia Baird near the end of the third quarter made it 38, 30 after three in favor of Mount Spokane.

Baird hit two more free throws to start the fourth quarter. Cut the lead to six. Mount Spokane took it back to eight, but then six straight points by LC cut the lead to two, went 40 to 38. A basket by Caris Santucci made it 42 38, but back came LC. They got a free throw, then a three pointer by Sadie Pierce to tie the game.

The one and only tie that we had in this game at 42 and that led us to our go ahead basket on our play of the game brought to you by Adam's tractor. Gardner with it gives away to Rubright way out beyond the arc on the right wing. Now up top to Santucci, looks inside, holds the basketball, finds Pretty. She'll drive in, try a pass inside. Tipped away but it goes to Gardiner underneath for a layup.
