There was an innocence about him. Ah. I. I'm. I'm going to really miss that guy.

But, yeah, that. That was one of the more. You know, we talked about the. At the end of the year, the five biggest mysteries from last year. You know, the Bobby Wagner thing, Jamal Adams, Carlos Dunlap.

You could. You could add KJ to that. You know, I mean, we kind of forgot about him. But not bringing him back was. Was kind of curious.

Why. Why do you think? Listen, it's never. I don't. I don't know.

Jimmy G May have set the standard for how to handle it when you know you're. You're not wanted anymore, when, you know a team is moving on from you. He couldn't have been classier. I got to give that guy all the credit in the world. Him in front of the media the way he did that was just.

I was sort of gobsmacked, like, wow, what a. What. What a mature approach. So much more mature than I would have been. So much more mature.

Just an example of how you handle something like that. But typically, when a team moves on from you. Yeah. You're not feeling good about it, it hurts your feelings. As we said, there's a lot of ego and pride wrapped up into something like this.

And we've seen, you know, with. With players that have left here, whether it's Earl Thomas last seen flipping off the sidelines, and, you know, nothing. Nothing good to say about Seattle and then Richard Sherman recently taking shots. It's. It's weird to see in such a player friendly environment, a player friendly coach and Pete Carroll and really giving all of these guys, whether it's Marshawn, whether it's Richard, whether it's Michael Bennett, any of the outspoken big personality guys, just giving them the freedom to be those guys where.

In other organizations. No, no, no, no. That's not how we conduct ourselves here. This is how you do it. And it's just weird to see some of the.

Some of the shots taken, you know, after they leave the building, that there's that weird animosity that exists for what you'd have to imagine was. Is desirable a place to play. As you could imagine for somebody who's very vocal in a. In a big personality. Yeah.

KJ was just the best. Yeah. So you heard kj. But then here's Richard, you know, talking on. On the podcast about Seattle fans.

You either. You either die the hero. Yeah. Or you live long enough to become the villain. And everybody's learning that the hard way.

Russell's learning that you either leave the hero or you stay long enough to become the villain. Because no matter what, these fans, these fans had never won anything before we got here. They had never won anything. They went to the Super bowl in 06, and we're happy to be there, you know, and that was their biggest claim. And then we get there, we win the super bowl, we spoil them with historic defense.

And then all of a sudden, that's their expectation. Now their expectation is, oh, we're going to the super bowl every year. Like cliff in the back. Yeah. You know, Bob, I, I wore my Stanford shirt today.

You've always said I don't have, you know, a whole ridiculous amount. But the one thing I will say, and I had a zoom call the other night with three other guys. One was our fullback, Brian Morris. The honorable Brian Morris, if you're in Montana, you know, he's like a district court appeal judge. And then my, my roommate, Bill Jackson, he was a safety.

He missed two questions on the SAT. There's like 175. And then Kevin Scott from Puyallup was on it. He was our, probably the fastest guy on our team. And his thing was, I remember he took calculus.

44 was the hardest math class that I didn't even come near. And he got an A plus in it. I mean, he was just so. And we kick it off with the 3A girls title which is going to be contested by the Mead Panthers, undefeated this season with a record of 21.

And oh against the Hermiston Bulldogs from Mid Columbia Conference. They were an upset winner over Ferris on Tuesday. Hermiston comes in with a record of 14 and 9. They just at a steady pace are just beating the tar out of teams. They have only had one game decided by even 12 points. That's been their closest game this year has been a 12 point game. Only five games have been decided by less than 20 points. They're giving up only 33 points a game and they're winning games by an average of 29 points per game.

So this Mead team, one of the top in the state, very steady all year long. For Hermiston it's been an up and down season and even games for them are up and down. Hermiston started the year with eight straight wins. Then they lost eight of their next nine games and now they have won five out of their last six, including three in a row. And the ball game on Tuesday against Ferris, they win it 50 to 46, 50 to 46.

But when you talk about streaky in that ball game. Well, Hermiston was outscored 35 to 9 in the first and third quarters of the game. But in the second and the fourth quarters they outscored Ferris 41 to 11. In those scores so. Or in those two quarters.

So even within games this team is up and down. And it all depends on whether they're making shots or not. This team will bomb away from the three point line, Paul. They really will. They have a gal named Lizzie Simmons who's who a ninth grader right now she was second team all conference out of the MCC.

She averages just under 19 points a game. Really good shooter, does a great job of getting up and down the court. And they have two sisters, the Heidelman sisters that are excellent at shooting and they'll extend their defenses three, four, sometimes five steps behind the three point line. They're not afraid to shoot from that distance and that's what's scary about this Hermiston team. If they're hot from outside the three, it's going to be a long night for Meade.

He's such a nice man, which is cool. He says they need to extend their defense because of the shooting acumen that Hermiston has. He was very impressed by their range and try to get them into a position where they're not having a good night shooting. So that streaky side make them not very good. Not.

Not, you know, have the bad first and third quarters as opposed to the good second and fourth that they had against Ferris. And then do what they do. Get some transition turnovers, turn them over, get down the court, get some fast break layups and play great defense. Hermiston has just got to make shots and they're going to. It's.

It's a size difference, too. When you look at what Mead is able to throw out on the court and what Hermiston has, it's significant in terms of that. And I think that's going to be a big key tonight. All right, very good. And those were our keys to the game presented by State Bank Northwest.

Mead, as we mentioned, 21 and oh, this season, Hermiston 14 and nine. Hermiston was eight and eight in the Mid Columbia Conference that was tied for fifth. But in the MCC, they kind of like the GSL. They. They wrap all their 3A, 4A teams together.

After this ballgame there'll be the 3A boys contest as it'll be Ferris taking on Kennewick. Then we'll have the four A Girls which will be two MCC teams that'll be playing. We will not have radio coverage of that game. And then Tonight at approximately 8:30 it'll be Gonzaga Prep taking on Kamiakin for the 4A boys crown. Tomorrow here in this building There will be four more games as they will start with the 3A boys game Mount Spokane versus Mead and that'll be for the third seed into regionals.

Then it'll be the 3A girls at noon, Ferris taking on Kennewick again. The winner moves on to regionals. The loser is out. Then it will be at 2 o' clock the 4A girls loser out. Game number one Pasco against number nine Gonzaga Prep.

That should be a whale of a game. Loser out, winner to regionals and then the 4A boys game between Central Valley and Richland at 330 for the third seed to regionals there. But here today we're talking district championships. The winner is number one to regionals, the loser number two, and game number one, the 3A girls championship between Mead and Hermiston. Nobody touched it. And Mead will get it on the turnover. And because nobody touched it, the ball goes to where they throw it in. Yeah, Hermiston threw it in on the sidelines between the bench and mid court here. So they'll have it in the back court.

Moore will bring it in and she will get it into Burns, who will give it right back to Moore. Will now bring it into the front court. They're going to try to trap her, but they can't. Moore drives in the lane, finds the shooter. Gardner open from the lap.

You don't have to play in those loser out games. That saves legs. When you have to get state, it's a big deal. So Hermiston, they are the lone team in Oregon that plays a in a Washington chamber.

The lone team in any other state that plays in a Washington league. And that's because they are kind of in an outpost. They're the only school their size within like a four or five hour drive in Oregon. So they play in this conference because they're 30 minutes from the Tri Cities, roughly 170 miles though from Spokane. Here's Moore with it way out there.

She will drive in, find Brown at the high post, into the low post intended for Burns, batted away. Burns though gets it now to Gardner. 15 footer good out of the left baseline. Taron Gardner gets another basket. Her six two pointer of the game.

That's her third, and that's only the fifth team foul on Hermiston. So they have to foul two more times before free throws come. 57 and 8, 10 seconds inbounds. Comes to Burns. She'll pitch it out now to Coleman and then.

Are they going to try to foul? Here's a drive by Moore into the lane. She has it poked away and it's stolen. Coleman comes out of there with it, now to Simmons. She'll race into the front court.

Simmons drives to the foul line, now starts to back in, takes it down the lane, puts up a shot and it's over the backboard, out of bounds and it's a Turnover on Hermiston. 38 and 1, 10 second. We have another timeout here taken by Hermiston with 38. 1 seconds remaining to play here in the fourth quarter, Mead will improve to 22 and oh, they go on to regionals. Hermiston will be 14 and 10.

They also will go on to regionals, but likely will be on the road as I don't think they'll be. They are right now in the RPI. I think they were like 17th, something like that. So they'll probably be on the road anyway. Go ahead.

And one more out of bounds here. Moore will bring it in. And a fresh 30 on the shot clock. Moore with it way out there. Coleman comes after her now.

And they'll underhand it to Gardner. She'll dribble across the top, send it over to Burns on the left wing. Burns out to Moore playing keep away right now. And Moore is fouled. And if it's Coleman, it's her fifth and it is so Adriana Coleman will go out with her fifth personal foul.

She ends the game with 10 points. Coleman a junior. They only have five. Well, they do have five seniors on this Hermiston team, but the majority of them are not big time players. Bailey Young and Caitlin Heideman are the two starters.

They took a 6 to nothing lead up to 9 at 11 to 2, took it out to 11 at 198 and led by 10 at the first intermission or at the first quarter by the score of 20 to 10 the lead went back to 11 at 23 to 12, was still at 10 at 2515 when Hermiston scored 7 straight points to cut the lead to 3 at 2522 in the second quarter.

But then our play of the game to snap that 7 nothing Hermiston run presented by Wendell Motors. Hermiston trailing by just three. Olivia Moore drives, feeds into the right corner three ball Suggs got it out of the right corner. Alicia Suggs with the Damen Orthodontics 3 and that makes it 2822 in favor of Mead. Suggs has 5 points so not only did that stop a 7 nothing Hermiston run, but it launched Mead on an 11 to nothing run.

A basket by Taran Gardner made it a 14 point game 36 to 22. Meade led 3624 after three quarters. Hermiston cut it to nine on several occasions in the the third quarter, but then Mead got hot again. An eight nothing run up the lead to 17 at 48 31. Hermiston cut the lead.

Well it was still 17 I should say at the end of three quarters. Hermiston cut it in the fourth quarter down as low as 12 points at 56 44. But Meade goes on to the 19 point win, 66 to 47 in this ball game. Still the closest game Meade has played this year has been a 12 point game. But Hermiston was only the fourth team to score more than 40 points this season against this Mead Panther defense which came into this game allowing only 33 points per ballgame.

Adriana Coleman also in double figures with 10, four for Lindsey Young, four for Avi Edwards, two points for Lindsay Bassan, a little sky and two for Caitlin Heideman for Hermanston's total of 47. Now, Paul has other stats here in this ball game. Pretty remarkable stat for me. They had 45 total rebounds. They had 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Seven players. One had five rebounds, six or five had six rebounds. And the leading rebounder was Haley Burns with nine. Also had four blocks. Burns had two blocks and two assists.

11 assists and eight total. Seals 13 turnovers for Mead. On the other side for Hermiston, 10 rebounds for Bailey Young. She did a nice job. She led everybody in rebounds with 10, seven rebounds for Heideman.

So Meade is the winner, they in the girls side and so they improved to 22 and oh on the season. So let's tell you about this boys game coming up. You've got The Kennewick Lions 14 and 8 overall on the season, 10 and 6 in the mid Columbia Conference.

They got to this game by defeating North Central 87 to 56. Or excuse me, they got to this game by defeating U high 78 to 59 and then Mead by the score of 58 to 49. Kennewick at 1 five out of their last six games and their only loss came against Kamiak and he's playing for the 4A district title tonight. So they have been hot as of late. This is a team that can score.

They are 9 and 4 this season when they have scored 60 points or more on the season. So they've scored 60 or more in 13 out of their 22 games so far this season. They do have some of the top players in the Mid Columbia Conference. Daniel Dickinson is a second team All MCC player. Aidan Knappick is an honorable mention All MCC player as is Tyler Mattioli Butcher as well.

They have not released the All GSL teams so far this year. But Ferris comes into this ballgame with a record of 17. 5, 6 and 3 was their record in the in the GSL. They have won five straight games since they lost to Gonzaga Prep. And this is a team that is playing pretty well at this point in time.

They move into this ball game having defeated walla wall to 69 to 55 and then they knocked off Mount Spokane 5550 in an upset on Tuesday. Mount Spokane is number four in the AP poll, number seven in the RPI and they got beat by Ferris on Tuesday. So Ferris gets the victory. Their losses this year came against Gonzaga Prep, Mount Spokane, Mead, Auburn, which is a top three team in the state in the 4A poll. And then they lost to Winter Haven, I believe of Florida in a tournament, a holiday tournament.

So Ferris, they have Ray Ray Bergerson back in their lineup. Ferguson got hurt in a ballgame last month, hurt his ankle. But he apparently is back now for Ferris and that is a big help to them because he is their point guard. He is also maybe their best three point shooter. And so that takes some pressure off Trace Atkins who does now not have to control the ball.

He doesn't have to bring the ball up the floor. He can play off the ball some. With Bergerson playing on the ball, we'll see if we see Bergerson here today in the lineup. He's not one of the guys playing out there right now with his warm up jacket off, he ends. A lot of the guys are just in their uniform without that warm up jacket and those are probably going to be the guys that start the game.

So anyway, Ferris 17 and 5 having defeated Walla Walla and Mount Spokane to get into this ballgame here today. This is the 3A boys championship. Coming after this there will be the 4A girls championship. We will not have radio coverage of that. It'll be two MCC teams playing.

I think it's Richland against Chijuana. I didn't write that down. I probably should have. Pasco, the number one team in the state in 4A was upset by one of those teams on over the weekend. And then the boys championship.

We will have the 4A boys championship at approximately 8:30 tonight. It will be the Gonzaga Prep boys who are hot right now taking on Kamiakin who's one of the top teams in the state at 192 overall this year. 15 and 1 was their conference record this year. Gonzaga Prep 14 and 7. But they have won two in a row and nine out of their last ten coming into this ballgame tomorrow here at the arena.

We'll have four more games here tomorrow and these are all to determine the third team into the regional tournament. The loser will be out. And so the first game of the day tomorrow will be the the 3A boys third place game.

That's where Mount Spokane, the number four team in the state according to the Associated Press, seventh in the RPI. They have to beat me in order to get the third seed into regionals. So Mount Spokane will be in action tomorrow morning at 10:30 against Mead for the 3A boys third place game. Then the 3A girls will start at noon. Ferris ranked eighth in the Associated Press poll, eight in the RPI.

They will take on Kennewick at noon tomorrow for the third seed into the 3A girls regional. The loser again is done. Then at 2 o' clock tomorrow it'll be the 4A girls game with the top ranked team in the state, Pasco, number two in the RPI. Take it on. Ninth ranked Gonzaga Prep.

So one of the top 10 teams in the state will be eliminated tomorrow in that ball game starting at 2, the loser or the winner will go on as the third seed. And then the boys game at 3:30 will pit the number 10 team in the RPI. The number seven team in the Associated Press poll, Richland taking on Central Valley. So that's what's happening tomorrow here at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. Both these teams out on the floor warming up prior to the start of this game.

Kennewick in their home white, Ferris in their road red here this afternoon. This portion of our pregame show is presented by Divine Corporation. And this will be our keys to the game segment here for Kennewick. They need to get the ball inside. They've got a size advantage led mainly by Kaden Nopek who is their big post inside.

They've got a number of big boys though they are a much bigger team than Ferris is. So Kennewick probably needs to try to get that ball inside and take advantage of any size advantage they have on the interior. Ferris. They need to get out and get this game. Ferris doesn't like to play really fast but the they've got to be able.

They don't want to get into a slog here. A mud wrestling contest with Kennewick who's got a lot of big dudes even if they're not really tall. They are well built kids. And Ferris I think would like this game to have a little more flow to it. I think they would.

And they like transition baskets too. So if they get a turnover and go the other direction, get an easy layup. If not, they'll try to kick it out, work the offense. And they've been known to jack up some threes as well. So I think it's going to be a key in this game is if they, if you know Kennewick does have that size advantage, don't let that hurt you inside.

You've got to take some shots. You've got to be able to D up and see if you can get the ball out on the perimeters and maybe turn it into a little bit more of an outside inside game instead of inside outside that I think Kennewick would like to play. So both of these teams have qualified for regionals, so they're both guaranteed games next week. But you can improve your position and both teams need to improve their position if they want to try to get a home game. And they're not a home game, but at least, at least a game in their town.

If Kennewick were to get a home game, they'd probably play in Pasco or in Richland and Ferris. If they were to get a home game, they would play at another school in Spokane, probably University, maybe Central Valley or Mount Spokane. So that's what's at stake here today. We got a fist bump the officials before we can do anything else here today. And those lineups first off for the visiting team, they are the Ferris Saxons here today out of the Greater Spokane League. Ferris coming into this ballgame with an overall record this season of 17 and 5. As we mentioned, they won their first six games of the season and that got them off to a good start. Had a little stretch of some losses there, but came back strong.

And they have won five straight games since losing to Gonzaga. Prep going for Ferris, coached by Sean Mallon. Trace Atkins will go at a guard for Ferris. He is 6ft tall and a senior. Also going for them will be Cruz wheeler.

He is 6ft tall and a junior. Ray Ray Bergersen, we talked about him being back in the lineup. He is 6ft 2 and a senior. Alec Roland is a 6 foot 4 inch senior starting inside. And Kobe Smith is the other forward on this team, a six three senior.

And here comes a cold gaggle of cheerleaders out onto the floor for Ferris to form a little tunnel for their players to go through. You've got jide olajoygb one of the Ferris players at the end of that for some fancy handshaking. That's the other thing you've got to do. Now when you go through the line, you've got at the end, there's got to be somebody that has all these different handshake. Well, it's like in baseball, you have to have a walk up, you know, song.

And we didn't have any of that stuff. They just said, okay, knucklehead 42 is coming to the plate. And then three pitches later he went back and sat down. That was me at strikeout. So there is your Ferris lineup with Atkins, Wheeler and Bergerson on the perimeter with Smith and Roland at the forwards for Kennewick.

They are coached by Braden Lady. They will have Daniel Dickinson in the backcourt. He is a senior guard. Also in there, Charlie Tipkey. Henry, he is a junior guard.

Jonah Gebbers is the third guard. He is a junior. And then their forwards, Miles Mayofsky, he is a senior. And Ada Napik is their post and he is a Senior. Napik is 6, 6, 6, 7.

He was a football player. Mayofsky is a football player. He's headed to Eastern Washington University to play for the Eagles next as a linebacker. So that's where I say some of these guys are big for this physical team. They may not be tall, but all of them are.

They're. They're. They're built as Ferris will be in their road red with Saxons in writing in script across the front in white trimmed in black. Kennewick in their white jerseys with Kennewick and script in orange trimmed in black. Who are our officials?

Do you know? Yes, I do. Joel Murphy from Spokane. And then you have. You've got Michael Chun from the Tri Cities and Hayden Hiltz from the Tri Cities.

So you have two Tri City officials. Joel Murphy is from the Spokane area. Last game you had two Spokane officials with one from the Tri Cities. So Alec Roland gets his introduction here. He is the final of the fair Saxons to be introduced again.

It is Bergersen, Atkins, Newcomb, Smith and Roland and Napik out there for Kennewick along with Mayofski, Gebbers, Tipke, Henry and Dickinson. And we will get the opening tip here. Ferris will be moving from right to left here in the first half of play. Again, a fairly sparse crowd, but again, people are just getting off of work. Well, there's a lot of basketball left to be played, too, here this week, next week.

And then if you're fortunate enough to get to go to state, that'll be a little road trip over to Tacoma in the dome and a chance to see if you can hoist the gold ball at the end of the weekend. So Aidan Knappek, he is six, six, maybe six, seven. He'll be jumping against Alec Rowland, our center tip, presented by Papa Murphy's Change the way you pizza. So everybody's lined up around the center circle. Napik wins the tip.

Good defense by Newcomb. He tries again into the lane. Pitches it now to Napik, who will back in, turn shoot too hard. No good. Off the back rim.

And Kobe Smith with a rebound for Ferris. Ahead now to Bergerson, who races into the forecourt. Gets it to Atkins. Now back out to Bergerson. It'll walk the ball out near the center circle.

Kennewick playing a 2, 3 zone, high post. Atkins now onto the baseline. Newcombe drives and lobs it out to Atkins on the right wing. He'll hand it there. Kobe Smith, he'll tee up a three.

Drives into the lane. Pulls up. Can't get a shot off. Has to pitch it out to Mayofski. He'll throw it out now.

He's number 20 now. So Dickinson is back into the ball game. That's probably what caused the confusion at the last break. He wasn't supposed to come out, but he had something on the uniform that made him change it. And that's why Gebbers came in late.

We had ties at 2 and at 7, Ferris took a 107 lead. That's how we ended the first quarter of play. And AJ Newcomb basket up the lead to 7. At 14 to 7, Kennewick came back trailing 16 to 11. They scored six straight points as a field goal by Charlie Tipkey Henry gave Kennewick their first lead at 17, 16.

Ferris took the lead right back on a three pointer by Dylan Scaithe. We were tied at 19 and then we were tied at 23 at the intermission. Ferris scored six straight points to start the third quarter of play. They had a 2923 lead. They upped it to seven, which equaled their biggest lead of the game at 32 25.

But then Kennewick scored 10 consecutive points. It was started by a couple of free throws by Tyler Mattioli Butcher. It was ended by a field goal by Charlie Tipkey and Hen Tipkey Henry. And so it was 35, 32 in favor of Kennewick. They led 37, 34 after three quarters, Kennewick up that lead to five early in the fourth quarter at 39, 34, Ferris came back, kept the lead to one.

Ferris was down by 2, 42, 40 late in the game when AJ Newcomb drove the ball to the goal and had an opportunity to put his team on top. Gebbers brings it into the Frank court now chased in a double. Team has the ball stripped away. It's stolen. Roland comes away with it.

Ahead to Newcombe. He'll drive to the goal for a layup. Good. And one Tifkey. Henry gets the foul.

Ferris forces the turnover. Come back the other way. Newcomb glides to the goal, gets the layup plus the harm from Tipkey Henry. He'll go to the line to try to break this tie. It's now all even at 42 with a minute 35 remaining.
