We're going to spread them out. They're going to try to spread Riverside out. They got a lot of depth at receiver and they're going to try to wear them down as the game goes on. The second key for Schadl is they need to tighten up the turnovers. They had a couple, you know, timely turnovers last week that really hurt them, cost him the game, cost them the game.

So we're going to tighten that up. And then third, Trey Dickerson just needs to play within himself. You know, he needs to take his five and, you know, seven yard slant routes and, and then come out with those well timed aggression shots. And then for Riverside, leading them is their offensive line. They need to establish the run game early.

They need to help out their quarterback. He's young and athletic, but setting the tone will kind of give him a rhythm to the game. 3 FM. So great to have high school football back in the Inland Northwest. We had a wonderful night out at Gonzaga Prep last week. Not a wonderful game for the Cheney Blackhawks. They got pretty much slaughtered at the hands of the bullpups 51.

Nothing but. So great to just have the community back together. First year in a couple years it truly feels normal here. Cole Car center to start the fall. It's been a couple of years where the world just feels normal and we watch football.

Yeah, I'm really excited. You know, this is the first year that the stuff seasons are starting up in fall and you're not worried about COVID or anything else kind of delaying the season. So we're all really, really excited to get back and have this game kick off. And we've got a good couple of games tonight across the Greater Spokane League as well. Let's take a look at some other games tonight happening around the Greater Spokane League, Cole Because I'll tell you what, for week two we've got some surprisingly good ones. Usually it takes us a week or two. We got some good ones obviously coming your way tonight at the top of the hour right here we've got Shadow park and Riverside. Here are just some of the other offerings we have tonight around the Greater Spokane League. Great rivalry games starting off in the smaller region.

Moscow, Pullman. How fun is that? Oh, that's going to be awesome. That's that's always been a historic rivalry and you know those teams are going to be, you know, chomping at the bit to get after each other. Week two, you love it.

Giving us some good, great rivalries early on elsewhere. Fun Little small school matchup just north of us. Kellogg, Deer Park. Oh, gosh, you know those guys are notoriously, you know, heavy run game. They're going to be in your face and there's going to be a lot of momentum, you know, that builds throughout that game.

That Deer park program lost their head coach of multiple years. To me. Since we are tonight at Union Stadium, we're talking of course about Keith Stamps. They're doing a good job turning that Mead program around. Can see considering how little time he had in the off season last year to get it done.

Keith stands now making an impact at me, but man, did he leave a good legacy at Deer Park. Elsewhere, East Valley at Lakeside tonight. That should be pretty good. I am watching Central Valley at Lewis and Clark tonight. Colton, here's the difference cv obviously powerhouse in the gsl.

Paul and I on the radio here last year saw LC a couple of times. I know you're a Ferris Saxon, you don't like to say it. Elsie, something is happening there. That program is getting better. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I live right up the street from LC and you know those coaches really got them going and I cruised by practice and those guys are excited to play and energize. So not surprised that they're having some success this year. Elsewhere tonight, your Farra Saxons at Sheeney. Possibly a slightly easier task than taking on G Prep last week, but I'll tell you, we saw Cheney on the radio last week. We liked their despite the fact that they got creamed.

Yeah, the score says otherwise. However, we saw a ton to like out of the Cheney Blackhawks. You're a Ferris graduate. Tell us about the direction of that program. Oh, Ferris has been great.

You know, I was, I was hoping that we were going to get it done versus LC at the Thunderdome. It was the first game in 20 years. Were you there? Nope, I wasn't there. But it was the first game in 20 years.

But you know those guys are resilient. You know, they got, they got a good structure and a good foundation over there. I think they'll find their footing and turn it on later towards the end of the season. Elsewhere tonight in the Greater Spokane League schedule, I think this is a very intriguing game. Mead out in the Valley at U High.

And that might not sound like a crazy game. Here's the thing. Coming into the season in the gsl, the pretty much universal thought was Gonzaga Prep number one, Mead number two, then a little drop off Mount Spokane number three. And then some other team is kind of battling for number four. And five and pretty playoff spots.

However, Mount Spokane kicked the head in of U High last week, just so you know, at home. So I'm not accused of favoritism. I'm an English teacher at Mead High School. I have Mead football players in my classroom every day. They said that Mount Spokane surprised a lot of people last week by really putting the hurt on U High.

And the Mead players think they need to equally put the hurt on you High tonight. They're worried that if they only win by a touchdown or so that Mount Spokane might have overtaken them them already in the season. That's early to be thinking about that. Yeah, yeah, definitely early to be thinking about that. But gosh, with this new stadium that's been built out here at Union, you can see why there's such a big rivalry between the two schools.

You know, they're, they're going to be really, really, you know, eager to get out there and go battle against one another. No question about it. Speaking of Mount Spokane, they're on the road tonight at Ridge Line over in Liberty Lake. Looking forward to see what that program does Cole, in coming years because we know Liberty Lake is a good area. It's got some money.

Typically with high school football anywhere in America, Spokane included, the places where you have the resources, you tend to get good players. Ridgeline might be a force here in the next couple years. Yeah, yeah, they just need to get established. They need to bring in, you know, the right people, the right coaches and really kind of get their footing as a foundation before they really start winning. But yes, they got the, they got the resources.

There's a, there's a big growing community out there in Liberty Lake. So excited for them. Elsewhere, Lewiston at Clarkson. And that is your RB's GSL game of the week pre game slate tonight. We have kickoff coming up in man, just about seven and a half minutes.

Cole, let's go ahead and take a look at our previews and predictions for tonight's game. So like we said right as we came on the air, a lot of people if they thought coming into this game, boy, you know, that's a GSL team taking on A1A school in Riverside. How good is that game really going to be? My spidey senses are just tickling about this one.

Shadow does have a couple guys back from last year. However. Riverside is a smaller team, but they got a lot of guys back on the line. I think Riverside's got a chance tonight. Yeah, Riverside's got a lot of experience on their side.

Their team's a little light on bodies. I'm looking across the field here and I'm only seeing about 20, 25 guys, you know, lined up against the Highlanders. So as the game wears on, you know, it'll be interesting to see how those, how in shape those guys are and if they've been really working in the offseason conditioning room. The biggest thing I'm interested in tonight, considering Shadow park should have won that game last week against Timberlake out of Idaho, is if they can have turned around the kind of sloppy mistakes that ended up potentially in some ways costing them that game.

If they're back and ready to play in week two and they are not going to make those mistakes, they should win this game. However, you know, early football season, stuff goes wrong. Yeah, stuff can go wrong in a hurry. And you know, we had a saying the team that wins the turnover battle usually wins the game about 80% of the time. So if Riverside can get a couple turnovers, I think they have a good shot at creating an upset today.

After that second run of the game by Beckett Ensinger for Shadow park, he got up to the 50 yard line. Shadow park is at midfield. They're in their classic uniforms tonight.

Green jerseys, that lime lemon lime yellow helmet, black pants. They're on the offensive side of the ball, driving left to right across your radio dial. Tonight on the right side of the ball. On defense, the Riverside Rams, they're in white jerseys, gray pants with red coloring, plus a 15 yard penalty on Riverside. All right, Cole, car setter.

Here we go. All of a sudden after two plays and a personal foul here, Shayla Park's already over to the Riverside 35. Yeah, Greg, they're battling up four early. They want to establish the tone and really, really set that to start the game here. So it's getting a little chippy down there between the offense and defensive line.

All right, so out of the shotgun comes the senior quarterback, second year starter, Trey Dickerson. He's big, six foot two and thick. He drops back. He's got a pocket with us collapsing. He rolls out to his right past the 40 yard line looking for the sideline.

He's out of bounds, Cole, but for a loss of two or three. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'd like to see him just kind of throw that one away and live to fight another day. So Trey Dickerson, if you're a fan of high school sports in Spokane, you might have heard this name by now. He's a returning starter, but the word on the street is he's really improved over the offseason he's willing to run more this year is what the coaches told us this week.

Cole. And we saw it right there. Yeah, yeah. That QB running the ball really, really adds to the whole schematics of football. It moves the gaps, it creates an extra gap, and it's someone that the defenses usually aren't accounting for.

Second down and long here for Shadow Park. Dickerson out of the gun. Two receivers split to his left, none to his right. A lot of guys on the offensive line. Fakes a handoff, tries to get back to the line of scrimmage, but he's tackled again for a loss in the backfield.

It's going to bring up third and 10 after what was a really good start to the drive. Yep, yep. Timing was a little, little poor right there from Schadl. Riverside was able to get through and sack the running back for a tackle for loss. All right, interesting look here as they get ready to break their huddle.

Here comes Trey Dickerson looking to the left and looking to the right. He's got two receivers and a tight end split to his left, one to his right, and he's joined in the backfield by Nick Tilton, who is their smaller running back, but he's fast. He's a sophomore. Riverside comes out with four down and three linebackers. Their two safeties are playing back deep for third down and 11.

Dickerson surveys the defense, gets a high snap and rolls to his left. The pocket's already collapsing. He's under pressure. Throws far left side pass complete by Cam O'. Dell.

He's got it at the 25 yard line. He caught it and fell out of bounds. That is a Damon Orthodontics first down. And Sheila park puts it together. Gosh, what, what a pitch and catch there.

You know, he rolled out. Receivers toe tapping on the sideline. That's a great football play. Coaches probably had to be a little concerned about what that series was looking up to be Cole. Yeah, yeah, for sure.

You know, they started off the series by condensing and focusing more on the run game, but towards the end that they spread it out. I take it back. The referees called that back. It's fourth down and one. It was not anymore.

Northern Optics first down. The ball is on the 26 on the right side of the field. They got to get down to the 25, but Shield is going forward on fourth down. Dickerson's got two receivers split to his left and one to his right trying to draw the team off sides. Takes a snap, throws far side back to Odell, it's caught.

That's a first down. He's to the 20, but flags are coming in from both sides of the ball. Yeah, I think we might get a hold here up top by his slot receiver making the block for him. We will hear what the referees have to say. Thankfully, they are mic'd up tonight and what appears to be the rest of this year at Union State Stadium, which does make things easier for us.

But, Cole, wouldn't that just be classic high school football the first couple weeks of the season? Man, you know, you have what looks like a good plan. It's called back. Oh, yeah, that's. That's.

That's typical. That's huge. It is a holding. It'll come back. Yep, yep.

They got a little aggressive out there on the end. You know, everyone's amped up. Fourth and one, they want to make a play, and that's the price. All right, so the ball now moves back to the 32 on the right side of the field. However, this is not punt territory.

This is go for it territory in high school because not many kids in the Northwest can make that kick. So it is fourth down and seven yards to go. The ball is back on the 32 and Dickerson comes out of the shotgun. Two receivers split each way. Beckett Emsvinger in the backfield with them.

Hands are high up above his face. Takes a snap and here we go. Lot of pressure. Throws deep over the middle. It's a post route.

Incomplete and knocked away by Blake Cosell. On defense, the junior db. That's a turnover. What a good stand by the Riverside Rams unit after that Bad start, Cole. Yeah, that was.

That was a good stand. It's nice to see them bend and not break once they get down here. Closer to the red zone. 820 to go here in the first quarter. Riverside takes over after the Shadow park turnover on downs.

So Riverside on offense. They're coming out on the right side of the field on their own 32 yard line. Silver helmets, gray pants, white jersey with red lettering and numbering. And their quarterback this year is the 6 foot 2 junior Jake Gaffney. You were saying before the game called that he looks like a quarterback.

He just needs a little weight on him. Yeah, yeah, he's just a young guy. Once he gets into the weight room for the next couple years, they'll really start to develop. But he's got a lot of athletic talent. So excited to see what he does here tonight.

Here they come to receiver split to the left handoff up the middle of Tyler lynch, he goes along the right side. He's got a block toward the 40 yard line. Pulled out of bounds on the far side of the field. That's a gain of 7 or 8 and that's exactly the start they were hoping for. Yeah, that's the run game that they're hoping to establish.

So get, get him out early and set the tone. Tyler Lynns is one of their smaller backs. They've got three that they feature a lot. He's 5 foot 8, 165. Yeah, he's a burner.

He, he likes to get out in space and, and really make guys work for those, for those open field tackles. Only one deep safety back on defense for Schadl here. They're expecting the run on second down and two. Here it comes. But it's going to be a pass.

Gaffney drops back, pockets collapsing. He's gonna try to run. Gets back to the line of scrimmage. And he falls down to the line of scrimmage. Tackled around the waist on the far side of the field.

No gain on the play. It'll be third and two. Still no score, 730 to go here in the first quarter between Riverside and Shadow Park. We said, Cole, this might be a closer game than people anticipated. Riverside's not looking too bad.

No, no, no. And they're still getting their rhythm. They're still getting their footing underneath them. They need to generate a little momentum on this first drive and, and put some pressure on Schadl. Coming down to the near hash mark is one of their best receivers, Cooper Eagle.

By the way, first, first team, all name team Cooper Eagle. Third down and two, one receiver split each way. Now they put a man in motion. Here comes a snap fake, jet sweep. And Gaffney's going to keep it runs along the right side.

He's got a hole and he's got an even orthodontics. First down, past the 40, up to the 49, nearly midfield before he's out of bounds. Yeah, I like that misdirection right there. You know, getting Gaffney out in space is always a good thing. And you know he's very athletic.

So anytime we can get him out on the edge, he can be dangerous. That's exactly right. Jake Gaffney, the scouting report on him. He's fast and smart. He just needs to work on his arm strength.

And because this is his only second game as varsity QB1 for Riverside, some things just take time. Decision making can only be experienced at game speed. Yeah, yeah, totally. First down and ten Four down lineman for Shadow Park. They're going to throw on.

First down, drops back, comes near side to Cooper Eagle. And it's off his hands as he was already sworn by Shield park defenders. It'll be second and 10. Yeah, that's. That's tough.

Hoping, hoping Cooper can pull that one in off the edge here. Next. Next down. He will, he will. Come along Cooper Eagle.

The coaches are high on him. It's his first year on varsity. They say he's got great hands. I think that time you might have just heard footsteps. Yep, yep.

They, they, they had a swarm of Shadow Park Highlanders coming after him on the edge. Yeah, they didn't have any blocking for him. That was a. Get it to him as fast as you can and see if he can run. Alright.

So second down and 10 after the incompletion. 620 to go here in the first quarter. No score between Riverside and Shadow park but Riverside is driving on second and ten. Handoff goes up the middle to the five foot eight Tyler Lindsay. He ducks and dodges.

He's got a gate of three. Yeah, he found some room in there. There wasn't a whole lot of real estate to work with Greg and I'm glad he got five yards there and this clock is ticking. Man. We are already halfway through the first quarter.

These teams have kept it on the ground pretty much. And listen to those Shadow park cheerleaders. You can hear the student section pretty good. Showing the night for shadow here on a Friday night not at their home stadium. Well, everyone's excited.

Eagle makes the catch of the 45. Either he fumbled it or it's off his hands. We'll see what the referees have to say. They'll say he had an incompletion, so the clock. No, they'll say he caught it and then dropped the ball.

So that's a gain of two yards on the play. Setting up third down and five year cold. This Riverside offense, they're cruising. Yeah, yeah. They need to keep working with the misdirection.

They've had some success, you know, fooling some of the Shadow Park Highlanders eyes. So I hope they stick with that and continue to spread the ball. The second game ever. A varsity quarterback. Jake Gaffney looks very comfortable back there for the Riverside Rams tonight.

Gotta love that for a new guy. Two receivers split to his left, one to his right, gets a low snap and here we go. Steps up in the pocket, looks left, looks right, steps up back to the 30 yard line and falls forward. He's about two yards short of a first down. I think this might be go for it territory, Cole.

Yeah, we'll see. When we were warming up, when the Riverside was warming up earlier, we saw their field goal kicker really, really banging them from a long distance. But it looks like they're going for it here and you know, with Gaffney behind center, Totally can see why. Well, this ball's on the 30, so that would make this a 46 yard kick. That'd be a lot for high schoolers.

So they're going for it. It's four, fourth down and a long two. One tight end to the right, one receiver split each way for Jake Gaffney. They put a man in motion. Fake jet sweep.

And Gaffney's gonna try to run it to the right. Turns the corner. He's got the edge past the 25 yard line, down to the 20 before he runs out of bounds. That's that. Amen.

Orthodontics. First down and Riverside is rolling down into the shadow park red zone. That. That is right, Greg. Riverside is rolling.

You know, they, they have this run game going and the, the lineman really seems to be generating some momentum for their quarterback here. Yeah, the quarterback, 6 foot 2, Jake Gaffney. This is a guy who knows what he's doing, though. Just because he's a first year quarterback. Don't get it twisted.

He was the backup last year. More importantly, he's been in the Riverside football program since grade school. So this is his time to shine. Yeah, he's excited to play and, you know, it doesn't look like the moment's too big for him. Comes left side again to Cooper.

Eagle off his hands again, but again he heard footsteps. These shadow corners are fast. They're all over these receivers. Yeah, they might need to go away from the tunnel screen there. Haven't had a lot of success with it, so we might need to change up the game plan.

I'm also wondering, it is early in the season and we know that teams expand their playbooks as the season goes on. I feel like we've only seen three or four plays this drive. Yeah. Yeah, we're only seeing a couple of jet sweeps, tunnel screens and some inside zone here, so. And then keep.

And then keeps for the quarterback, Jake Gaffney. All right, second down and 10 balls on the 23 yard line on the left side of the field. Trying to get down to the 13 yard line. And we've got a timeout on the field of 211 to play. Riverside wants a timeout before they try to get down there and score a touchdown.

Hand off of the middle to the five foot eight Tyler Linds.

He's stuffed to the line of scrimmage. This will force a crucial third down and 10 from the shadow park 23 yard line. A cold car center. I'm not sure we thought Riverside was going to get this far down the field on their first drive. Yeah, no, it's appearing that schedule is going to bend and not break.

Similar to when Schadl had the ball on their initial drive. Third down and a long nine here for Riverside. And the right handed quarterback, the six foot two Jake Gaffney hands off the lid. He cuts left 20 yard line trying to get the corner brought down from behind. A fantastic tackle by Jordan Deaver, the two way player.

He just saved a touchdown. Yeah, that was a great play by the. By the young corner coming up and making a play. So he did pick up yardage on the play. He got about seven yards.

This is going to look like fourth down and two, maybe fourth down and three for Riverside, but appears they are going to go for it because it looks like Jake Gaffney is staying on the field. What do you think, Cole? Yeah, look, look. To have Gaffney run this up the middle for you, maybe create a little misdirection, confuse, shades, eyes. But I would, I would keep it in the hands of Gaffney.

The most dependable play we have seen on this drive is him taking it along the right side. Yes, yes. Bunch formation time out on the field. They're going to regroup here. Yeah.

So that'll stop the clock. 49 seconds to go on the clock on the right side of the field here at Union stadium. Shadow Park 0, Riverside 0 here in the first quarter. But it's so funny. Cole, do me a favor.

Get your phone out again. Look at your keys to the game. It looks to me like Riverside is doing just about everything you said they needed to do to have a shot in this game tonight. Well that's, that's exactly right, Greg. You know the first key to the game was establishing the run game.

And Gaffney's really set the tone here for Riverside. They've done a good job controlling the line of scrimmage, adding in a little misdirection and catching Schadl off guard on the edge. No question about it. And it looks to me like they've done a pretty good job at least containing Trey Dickerson. They're letting him throw out to the far side and he's got a good arm on him.

But Schedel's not established that run game at all. Yeah, yeah. As Schadl continued to spread them out. When they got further and further to the red zone, the Riverside really kind of bear down and shut them down. So here comes a little one a riverside down on the Shadow Park 22 yard line.

They've got to get right there rather on the 17 yard line. They've got to get down to the 14, might get a field. Instead they come out with a kick formation. They changed it all on us. Jake Gaffney, the quarterback is also the kicker.

Here comes a high snap. The kick is up. He's got a good leg on him. It looks like it snuck just inside the upright and it did on the left side. Riverside is on the board first in front of Shadow park after a field goal.

Three nothing Rams. Wow. How unbelievable with that. Was that the snapper caught the or the holder fumbled the snap, put the tee down and guess who makes the kick. The starting quarterback, Gaffney can do it all.

Did you be honest with me now that it's happened, did you think Riverside was going to get on the board first tonight? I wasn't anticipating that. You know, Shadow came out. They look strong in the run game and in the pass game. Was not anticipating that Riverside would be on the board first.

It seems like a near certainty that we're probably going to see 14 or 21 points, I would say on the board for Shadow park tonight because that drive stalled out. But initially it looked really good. I think it's probably a question of, of when, not if for Shadle, but if Riverside can score points, points like we think they might be able to tonight. This game might be good. Yeah, it's getting competitive out here.

It's getting competitive out here. You know, Shadow. Shadow really established the QB run game and you know, Riverside just came right back with Gaffney and. And kind of put into play a similar game plan. It looks like.

Listen to that band and those cheerleaders. Football's back, folks, as they stop. Okay, so Riverside 3, Shadow park nothing tonight on the RV's GSL game of the week. Riverside ready to kick it off. Right to left across your radio dial and back to receive for Shadow Park, a guy who has made a play on defense but did not get any looks on offense.

Jordan Deaver. Here comes the kick. It's back to him. He receives it at the two yard line on the left side of the field. He'll take it up past the 10 to 15 to 20, cuts along the outside.

He's got some loss. 25, 30, 35, 40. Past the 40 yard line near the 45. What a great return. A Cole, he's their number one receiver.

He just looked like it. Yeah, he's explosive. You know, he got the edge and it's lucky that Gaffney was back there to take him down because if he wasn't, I might have been a touchdown. So we got to the 41 yard line before he was eventually run out of bounds. And man, did, did Riverside run a lot of time off the clock on that drive.

Seidel comes back out. Only 41 seconds to go in the first quarter, but they've got pretty good field position from their own 41. I want to see what Trey Dickerson can do on this drive. Yeah, let's. Let's see what he's got here, Greg.

Two receivers split to his left side, none to the right. Tight ends in this formation. And in the backfield he was joined by Nick Tilton, the 5 for 9 sophomore. But Dickerson is tall, he's 6 foot 2, he's a thick quarterback. And we have a whistle on the field from the referees already.

So the referees have to say they're conferring back around the 35 yard line. And you know, I take back what I said at the top of the broadcast. Nice little student section on the far side of the field for Riverside. Just gonna point that out, Craig. They're resetting the clock to 35 seconds.

Go ahead, Cole. It looks like, you know, they didn't get the memo on on kickoff, but Riverside students section and fan base has grown tremendously since the start of the game. They are resetting the game clock for 35 seconds to go here in the first quarter. It wound down to 29 seconds as of the last play. Well, this has been slowing down what was a very fast first quarter.

There we go, 35 on the clock. Only one deep safety back here for Riverside on defense. Be interested to see if Shadow park takes a shot. First down and 10 from the road. 41.

Here they come. Dickerson surveys the defense, takes a high snap. He'll run it up the middle, gets back to the line of scrimmage, falls forward, gaining three yards, got to the 44. Yeah, they're right back to their bread and butter. Greg.

QB run game. Trey. Trey's looking to find a gap. He's a very, very athletic and talented player. I can see why they want to get the ball in his hands.

15 seconds to go here in the first quarter, but there's 25 seconds on the play clock so schedule can run a play here on second and seven. The question is do they want to or they're just going to try and draw riverside offsides. 5 seconds, 4, 3. The run of play. Handoff at the middle to Ems Minger.

Dickerson in a deep shotgun, joined by Emsminger in the backfield. Hands it off to Beckett. Rather do Beckett. He's got it past the first 44 yard line, maybe again a two or three yards and the clock's moving again. All right, Cole Carpenter.

We did not expect Riverside to be on the board first, but man, this game looks like it's going to be pretty good actually, despite Riverside having quite a few less kids on the roster. Yeah, yeah, they're, they're trying to establish shadows, really trying to spread them out now and I think try to play into their hand of not having as many guys and so they're really going to try to take them out to the deep end and see, see how long they can last. It was a gain of two on the play, so second down and eight and Riverside brings up one of their safeties. Expecting a run, but they might get burned here. Throw deep over the middle.

Caught by Jacob Boston. He's passed A safety to 20, 15, 10, 5. Tackled from behind at the four yard line and they burned him. Cole Carstetter, they brought up a safety and they beat him right where the safety was. God, that was a great throw by Trey there.

He caught him right across the the middle in stride on time. Great throw and catch. And here come the Shadow Park Highlanders. 10 minutes, 55 seconds to go until halftime. Down three, nothing.

But here they are inside the Riverside five yard line and they're coming out in a spread formation. Two receivers to the left, two to the right. Jordan Deaver, their most potent threat in the left handed slots. Dickerson looks to the near side sideline to get the signal from his coach and surveys the defense. He's got Beckett to his left in the backfield.

Surveys the defense. It'll run to himself. Takes it himself. Left side around the corner. Spun down at the 1 to the 2.

Got a yard or two, but not a touchdown. It'll be second and goal. Gosh, this Riverside defense is just kind of stingy. You know, they're bending but they're not quite breaking yet. Second drive in a row that's happened, by the way.

I think they're gonna, they're gonna let Trae handle the ball here and try to get him up the middle. I think throwing on the one yard line in high school is, is a tricky situation. Yeah. All right. Bunch formation.

Deaver on the left side. This looks like it might be in a kind of an H back formation here. Maybe a sweep in the motion. 955 to go or two receivers to the left. Dickerson hands off to Ensminger, dives forward past the guard.

Touchdown Shayla Park. And they're on the board. Six to 3, 950 to go and they take the lead. Yeah, that was, that was a great, great run play there by Shadle. Right up the middle.

Running back just, was just wanted it, wanted to get in there. They're generating a lot of momentum. Sh park fans, Shadow park students, Shadow park cheerleaders and band happy about it. Listen to him go. Out comes the kick.

And the receiver. Let's see what we got here. We have a low line drive kick and here comes Gaffney. The quarterback actually receives it to the 25. Cuts along the 30.

Far side sideline 35 near the 40. That's where he's pushed out of bounds. Yeah, yeah. They. He was looking to set up the wedge over there on the left side and really, you know, work up that sideline for some extra yardage.

So Jake Gaffney, quarterback, kicker, kick returner guy does it all. He does it all. He's their best athlete. And, you know, that's the name of the game, Greg. Get the ball into the hands of your best athletes.

Absolutely true. In any level of football, but especially in Spokane, GSL area play, so often the team that thrives has a good offensive line and then two or three really key players. Yeah, yeah, that's. That's totally right. It's all going to pivot off of Gaffney tonight.

All right. He got to the 35 yard line before he was pushed out of bounds. Are on the left side of the field. 35. Gaffney drops back pocket collapsing, looks right, throws to a crossing receiver.

It's Colden Ackerman. He makes the catch of the 38 yard line. Gain of 3. And look at Gaffney showing off a little bit of his arm strength there. I like.

I like seeing him get outside the pocket, cross his body under a little pressure and getting the ball out there. No question about it, man. A beautiful sunset happening to the left side of the field out here at Union Stadium in Mead. Clearly still fire season in these parts because that is a dusty looking sunset, but it is just beautiful blue on the top of the sky, then orange and red and purple, and then you hit the mountains. A really scenic picture tonight.

Back on the field, though. Second down and six after the gain of four. Handoff up the middle to Lynn's, picked up two. It'll be third down and four. Yeah.

Be interesting to see what they do right now, Greg. You know, they got third and four. They've had some success running the ball. We'll see if we get Gaffney on a sprint out. We still have not really seen them uncork it.

That pass to Ackerman might have been the longest we've seen today, and that's been about five yards. Yeah, yeah. They haven't quite pregame keys, right? You know, or keys to success. They're really trying to establish this run game and get Gaffney in a rhythm before they start to open up the playbook to start throwing the ball downfield.

Referees, mark that up a little farther. Call it. Third down and three. Two receivers to the left, one to the right. It's a low snap.

Gaffney is going to take it along the outside. Man, barely back to the line of scrimmage. May be a gain of one. It's going to be fourth down and probably two yards. And this smells like punching territory.

And yep, out come the Rand's punting unit. That's probably the right call. Probably the right call in this situation. You know, Riverside's defense has had some success, especially the last two series. So probably just throw a bandaid on this one and stop the bleeding.

822 to go here in the second quarter. Gaffney stays on the field. He's going to punt. He's the kicker, the punter. A kicker Turner and a quarterback guy absolutely does it all.

He's on the left side of the fields. 30 yard line, gets a good snap, puts a real boot into this one. Jordan Deaver waiting to receive. It bounces out of bounds at The Shadow Park 29 on the right side of the field. Yeah, not a bad idea to keep it away from Deaver.

We saw what he did on the last kickoff return. Pretty smart to just kick it out of bounds there and get the defense on the field. So the Highlanders come out with their spread offense. Sometimes they like to incorporate a pro style mix. But just another chance to see the great 6 foot 2 right handed quarterback, Trey Dickerson.

This dude has a big arm and the scouting report on him calls that when he makes the correct read he gets the ball there. He's got one of the strongest arms in Spokane. Oh yeah, he's a talented young man and hopefully that he can, he can put the ball into the correct places and continue to make plays. Sometimes scouting a port goes, he can get greedy and tries to go deep. So what they want for him today is to start making those five and 10 yard passes.

He's been pretty good about that tonight. Yeah, yeah, we want to see him just kind of hit his checkdowns, work through his progression and, and be conscious of how often he's taken that shot. Shadow park takes over on their own 30 yard line. Here comes a snap. Dickerson hands off to Ensminger along the right side past the guard, past the 40 yard line, up to the 42.

That's a gain of 11 and a day in orthodontics. First down. This running game for schedule is now starting to come along. Yeah, this might have to do with some of that depth that Riverside has. A lot of those guys are playing two ways and you know, it looks, looks to be they might get a little tired.

7:45 to go. Until halftime, 7 to 3, Shadow park and listen to the Highlander students here. Well, they stopped as soon as he said that, of course, but there they are. They have a habit of doing that. Live radio.

First down and 10 for Shadow park from their own 40 yard line. They're moving up field. Only one deep safety back for Riverside on defense four wide receiver. Look here for Dickerson. He's going to launch it down the left sideline off the hands of Andrew Fox.

Pass falls incomplete. Just a yard or two ahead of his guy. Oh, that was, that was close there, Greg. You know, right off the fingertips. A little sluggo route hitch and go up the sideline looking for that big play to really generate some huge momentum.

I like the call there, but again, he's actually doing a good job reading this Riverside defense. That's the second time he has seen a safety sneak up and then taken a shot. Yeah, yeah, he saw the quarter bite a little bit on the hit and you know, that was a, that was a well placed ball. Just couldn't quite come down with it. No question about it.

Trey Dickerson has an arm. He's just overshooting guys. Ever so slightly. Yeah, ever so slightly. Second down and 10 from their own 40 yard line on the right side of the field and they come out with a bunch formation and a flag flies in from the defensive referee on the 40.

We're going to get a false start here, I think, Greg. Delay of game, loss of five. Yeah, I'll tell you, you don't usually see that in high school that often nowadays with an experienced quarterback, considering they have taken the, the cues of the high school, of the college and NFL ranks, and right above the opposing team, the quarterback can see the clock that has the, the play clock on it.

Well, and there's very few teams that huddle now, Greg, and no huddle, you know, usually don't run into that scenario. Second down and 15. They got to get past midfield to the Riverside 49 yard line. Big bunch formation again here for Shadow Park. They put a man in motion left to right.

It's a tight end. Here comes the snap. Dickerson rolls outright. He's going to keep it himself. 40 yard line up to the 45.

Tackled around the waist by one of the big linebackers on the left side of the field. He got a gain of about 10. Hit and it's going to be third down and six. Yeah, way, way to go, Trey. You know, didn't see any receivers downfield.

Tucked the ball, got five yards. That was, that was a great play. And in a situation like that, second and 15, you'll take that. You just want enough that it could be either a run or a pass on third down. Yeah, you want to make these third down manageables, Greg.

Manageable. So third and five is a lot more manageable than third and ten. They got up to their own 46. They got to get across the 50 to get to the opposing field 49. Three receivers to the near side for Shadow Park.

Let's see what Dickerson does. Only one deep safety back again. They got a good jump on the snap and it's tipped at the line of scrimmage. Boy, what a great one by Brock Martin, the lineman that'll force 4th down and 5. And I would think a punt.

Gosh, that was tough there, Greg. You know, they had the blockers out there for him that that had the potential to be a big play. I thought so too. And really they had the blockers for the wide receivers. What you meant there.

And really just a good right hand to knock it away. Yep, exactly. So big, big stand there by the Riverside defense. So now they'll get to receive the kick. They've got a man standing back at the 15 yard line and against all odds, that is not Jake Gaffney.

He seems to do everything else. Apparently not punt returning. And as they get ready to punt it away right to left, we've got a timeout on the field for Shadow park and we will take it with them. 6:17 until halftime. 7 to 3 is our score.

Man, what an unbelievable punt by Shayla park who leads Riverside 7 to 3 with 617 to go until halftime. So a 98 yard field here for Jake Gaffney and the Rams cold Carstetter. Yeah, they're gonna have to, you know, get another gap on schedule or somebody's gonna have to be off, off their cue because that is a long, long way to drive and617 in high school football, if your team that runs the ball, that might not even be enough time.

That might not be enough time. Time for the Riverside Rams. You know, they, they have yet to kind of open up the field and open up the passing game. So we'll see what they, let's see what they do here. Let's see if this is the series where they just start to decide to start taking some shots.

Their new right handed quarterback, Jake Gaffney has been great tonight though. Puts a man on motion from the two yard line, takes a snap. He's running behind his blockers and gets up to the five, picks up two or three before he's spun down. Not bad. Just this unbelievable dusty sunset off to the left of the field tonight here at Union Stadium in Mead.

I know that it's because of unhealthy air quality, but man, it looks like a painting. Cole. Yeah, it's quite the scene out here, isn't it, Greg? It's, it's pretty spectacular. And so glad to have football back.

They built a pretty great stadium out here in Mead. This is pretty phenomenal as far as it goes in the Spokane area. Gain of two on that last place. So second down and eight here for Riverside coming off a win last week at St. Mary's 13 to 6 and looking good tonight.

Gaffney drops back in the end zone, throws far side. He's got a man open to the 15 yard line and he's running of bounds at the 20. Complete pass. That was Cooper Eagle making the Damon Orthodontics. First down.

Yeah, Cooper was able to kind of scramble, do a little scramble drill there and Gaffney extended the play long enough for him to get a open. Good for these little Riverside Rams. They're a run first pass, second team. But Jake Gaffney is, man, he's, he's looking like the captain. He deserves to be Tonight.

Yeah. Yeah. Gaffney looks great. He's doing it all and hopefully they can continue to put some pressure on this. Shadow defense.

Shadow student section doing it all tonight. But their team is only up 7 to 3 with 450 to go. Riverside trying to make a push. Gaffney drops back, rolls out to the right. He's going to keep it back to the 20.

That's the line of scrimmage. 25 hurdles, a man jumps over a guy and gets to the 30. That should be David Orthodontics. First down. And it appears that it was.

Man, it just hurdled a guy. Yeah, he, like you said, he can do it all. Gaffney is out there. He's. He's extending the play.

He's really the heart and soul of this Riverside team. Pretty good looking. He got up to the 30 yard line, so that is an amen. Orthodontics first down, clock ticking. 418, 17, 16, 15 to go until halftime.

They're going to have to go deep a couple more times, Cole, because they're not stopping the clock. Put a man in motion. Full receiver. Look, it's a jet sweep. It's going to colden Ackerman.

His second touch of the night. He cuts up field, gets between the hashes for gain of two or three. That's not going to be enough. No, not cold. They're going to need to, you know, have some.

Incorporate some play action, pass and really, you know, stretch these Shadow Park Highlanders downfield. Called a gain of a long two on the play. They got to get up to the 40 here, but that clock now ticks 343, 342, 341. They've got a score here before halftime. No doubt about it.

They're down 7 to 3 to Shadow park and they're trying to make a shock in the Spokane area tonight. Handoff up the middle to Tyler Linds. Cuts up field past the 40 to the 45 yard line. No way. He shook three Shield park defenders.

He's near midfield for David Orthodontics. First down. Gosh, the running back was so patient right there. He kind of waited for his hole. Waited, was patient.

Referees are telling them to stop the clock for the first down. I guess they hadn't been doing that over the clock. Booth, this is not the NFL. If there's a clock stoppage, there is a first down, folks. Yeah, that was a great run by the running back there, Greg.

Yeah. Tyler Lynn's 5 foot 8, 165. He's small, he's fast and he can read those blocks. That's why they Love him. Clock runs 320, 319, 318.

Gaffney out of the shotgun. Two receivers to the left, one to the right. Two. Dave Seat is back for Shadow. Comes near side, has got Colton Ackerman again.

Dives from midfield. Got a gain of 2. It's going to be second down and 8. 305, 304, 303. Not a lot of time.

Not a lot of time, Greg, you know, they're going to have to. Maybe they're trying to, you know, pull the defense up, waiting for a big shot to open up over here. I would be surprised if Shadow's going to allow a deep shot, though. They know time is not on Riverside's side. Yeah, you'd be surprised.

A couple of those fake and goes. Some people get a little eager, get a little aggressive, and it only takes one player, you know, shotgun bunch formation here for Riverside. Gaffney drops back, hands it off with the middle to Lynn C. Spun down to the line of scrimmage. No gain.

Third down and long. Yeah, I was surprised to see that. That run play called there. You know, like you said, we're running low on time here, so would anticipate Shadows really going to back off here as a pass place. Probably getting called in.

Riverside up their own 49 yard line. Gotta get across the midfield mark to Shadow Parks 44 if they're gonna pick up a first down. Well, Greg, I think your spidey senses were right on tonight. We got a competitive game here out at Union Stadium. Riverside's a good little team and don't let anybody ever tell you otherwise.

Referee runs out, it looks like Shadow park wants a timeout and they are going to take it. Cole. Okay, so you just said that. Let's diagnose this. Shadow park, historically a good team.

They have an NFL quarterback in the ranks with the Ripens, actually two of them. However, this is a team that has been a little inconsistent over the last couple years. Part of the reason, Cole, I said Riverside might have a shot tonight is because of something you said on the field. Yeah, Shadow park has more guys, but they look young. Because they are young.

Yeah. Yeah, Greg, they, they. I was looking at the roster earlier today, and they got a lot of young guys out there. And Riverside kind of prides themselves on, you know, being big and aggressive up front. So you can see how they can generate some of that momentum as the game wears on.

And some of those young guys might not be as used to playing for four straight quarters. Not a lot of freshmen make GSL rosters, but, you know, if you're a sophomore who played freshman or JV ball last year, I mean, straight up, man, that's a different game when it comes to high school. Yeah, it's a different game for sure. Everyone's bigger, everyone's stronger, everyone's faster. And the game happens at a faster speed.

Shadow park leading Riverside 7 to 3. But Riverside here trying to make a push before halftime. 153 to go to the break. Here comes the snap. Gaffney drops back, looks to his left, hucks it up down the far sideline.

Flag comes in. That might be holding, but it is a complete pass. And a first down to Cooper Eagle if the call stands. But it came from the backfield. I bet that's holding.

Let's see what they say here. But what a great throw by Gaffney. You know, that was a 15 yard comeback. Not a lot of people can make that. It looks like, you know, his arm strength is pretty impressive.

And they're marching it back. That would have been a great 15 yard pickup like you said. But that's holding and they will move it back. That is an absolute killer because now they're gonna. Well, it looks like they're gonna make him go forward again here on third down and near 20.

Yeah, this is a tough down and down in distance, Greg. Third down and what, 20, almost 25. 25 yards there. There's not a lot of plays in the playbook for 3rd and 25, so can imagine they might try to run this. Run the clock down, punt it off and hold on defense.

One timeout left for each team. 1:45 to go here until halftime. Shadow park on top of Riverside. Seven three deep, shotgun. Look here for Jake Gaffney drops back, throws a post over the middle.

He's got Colden Ackerman tackled at the 41. That's a gain of five or six. It won't be enough. So that'll bring up a fourth down punting situation. But clock stops.

Shadow park wants the timeout. They want enough time on the other end of this timeout to stop the clock. Cole. Yeah, and I think they have a good opportunity. You know, Trey's shown that he can air it out pretty, pretty deep down the field.

And he's got the tools in Jordan Deaver to, To, you know, really cover some ground here. As we end the first half, I have a hard time thinking they're going to go on the ground much here. They're going to Be looking for their one or two guys. Yeah, they're definitely going to be looking to spread the ball out and apply some pressure down the field. We've seen Cam o' Dell make a great catch.

Jacob Boston as well, and then of course, Jordan Deaver. But they've only really thrown to those three guys. I might start looking for the young sophomore, Christian Walters too. Yeah, yeah, no, they're definitely going to as with. With the clock against them.

They're going to look to look for those guys down the field. All right, so Shadow comes back out there ready to receive the punt. They're going to send Jordan Deaver back there to do it. They didn't even kick to him though, Cole last time, that's the thing. So didn't have a chance to return it.

If you were Shadow park, would you. Would you Even if you're Riverside, do you even give him a chance here? If I was Jordan Deaver, I'd scoot up a little bit. I don't think they're gonna look to kick to him, but I would try to get the ball into his hands because in open space he's dangerous. He can make a lot of things happen.

Happen. High snap back to the 30 yard line on the left side of the field. Kicks away. Deaver's gonna have a chance. Catches it at the 24 yard line.

Shakes a tackle. Shakes a second tackle. Comes near side, taken down from behind to the 32. Pretty good vice by Riverside there. You know, Jordan made a couple guys miss but was able to get gobbled up by Riverside special teams.

All right, so not a lot of time left on the clock here for Shadow Park. They lead 7 to 3 on top of Riverside. 132 to go in the first half and they've got what, 69 yards to go. Yeah, this is. You got to be careful in this situation.

You don't want to throw an interception or have a timely turnover. That really swings the momentum. Riverside, big student section on the far side of the field. A little less loud than they were a few minutes ago. Potentially worried that Shadow park might be able to punch one in before the break here.

They've got 92 seconds and a flag comes in from behind the line of scrimmage. That's going to be on the offensive referee. Let's see, 12 men on the field. That is a killer. Yeah, that's a, that's a break.

And you know, the, the coaching from up top. You know, obviously 24 thought, you know, they were. Had one package going in and it turns out that they're a little off. So now first down and 15 for Shadow Park. They've got 132 to go.

They lead by four points. Trying to get down the field and score one more time before halftime. Two receivers split each way. Here comes the highest nap for Dickerson. Throws an out pattern near side balls caught at the 31 yard line.

And it is hauled in by Joey Barber. His first catch of the night. Looks like they stayed in bounds, Greg, that clock's gonna continue to. Yeah, he did not get down in time. So now second down and 11.

Clock ticks 119. 118, 117. Here comes the snap on offense again. They come near side to Christian Walters. Makes a catch of the 30, no gain.

Same thing. They try to get a tunnel sweep screen there and stayed in bounds. That's really going to cost them. Timeout on the field. Is this Riverside taking a timeout?

Please set the clock to 104. We have a timeout, Riverside. Okay, well, that is interesting. Riverside wants a timeout, Cole. They want one more chance before the clock goes out.

Yeah, they're gonna try to make a late push here at the end of the first half to try to, you know, gain some momentum back, maybe. Maybe make something happen within the last minute here. I did not see that coming. No, no, that was. I didn't anticipate that as well.

You know, they've been mainly a ground. Ground to pound team and you know, they're going to have to make up some ground here if they want to score before halftime. Shadow park students actually doing a good job tonight. Let them know who's technically the home team, even though it's Mead Stadium. Yeah, they're doing a great job.

It's. It's fun to see the fans back in person. All right, 104 to go here until the end of the first half. It's now third down and 11 for Shadow Park. Both teams have been burning timeouts.

So Shadow's got one. Rather, Riverside's got one timeout left. Shadow's got not. You know, that's interesting. I don't see Deaver out there.

Greg, two receivers to the near side. He might be in the slot here. Here comes on third down and 11, they go up the middle on the handoff. That's Yager taking on the jet sweep. Got back to the line of scrimmage.

No gain. They were ready for it. Clock runs 53 seconds, is now fourth and 10. And Riverside is gonna have very little time here on the other End of this punt. Yeah, it looks like they still have a timeout, but I think the scoreboard's right.

I think the scoreboard's wrong. Wrong. For what it's worth. Okay, so 20 seconds on the play clock, 35 seconds on the game clock. So there's going to be about 15 seconds once this ball's in the air.

That is not very much time, Cole. No, not no time at all. They're going to have to make something happen on this punt return. They're going to have to set up a wedge and really, really kind of get this returner out in space and lose 15 seconds. And there goes the play clock.

They're going to eat. Delay of game here. Probably a good call there, Greg. You know, run the clock down as much as you can. These referees are being a little sassy with the game clock operator tonight, huh?

Yeah, I have never seen them reset the clock so many times. Little sassy. All right, so after the penalty, fourth down and 15 for Shadel. They'll be punting. They might try to go after it here.

Greg, looks like they're lined up in the A gaps coming after him. All right, so Riverside would like to block this punt. They're sending everyone. But that kicks in the air and it's a deep one down to the 30 yard line of Riverside. Around the corner.

Here comes Eagle. He's wrapped up immediately at the 34. So Riverside's got a long way to go. Their own man, what? 35, 36 yard line.

They've got 11 seconds to get the rest of the way. Yeah, they're probably just going to take a knee, go into the half and regroup. All right, so a long way to go for the Riverside Rams. They're one and oh this season. Coming off that win last week at St.

Mary's picked it up 13 to 6. They got on the board first tonight. A field goal after a long drive. And their first drive of the game put them up three nothing. Shadow park scored a touchdown.

Beckett Ensminger ran it in from the goal line, made it seven to three. That's where we still are here with 11 seconds until halftime. However, Riverside might want to take a shot. Here comes a low snap to Gaffney. Pocket collapses, throws a screenplay.

It's hauled in at the 40 yard line. That catch is made, but not for a whole lot of yardage. That was Austin Gallagher who caught it. Gain of 8 yards. But that is the end of the first half.

So great to have you with us tonight for week two two of our high school football slate. Man, we had a Blowout. Last week in week one of our broadcast, it was Cheney at Gonzaga Prep. Cheney had a little bit of a shot in the first quarter, eventually ended up getting completely railroaded by G Prep. Final score Last week in week one of our broadcasts, 51 to nothing and the pregame show.

Cole Carfstetter, who's calling the game with me tonight and I we said our spidey senses were tingling about this game. Our funny bone was feeling a little bit strange as as we each got out of bed this morning. And at halftime it's Only Shadow Park 7 Riverside 3. Riverside came off a win last week. Shadow park should have won their game against Timberlake, but they kind of blew it on mistakes in the second half.

So people were wondering coming into this game, would Shadow make more mistakes with it? Give Riverside an opportunity. So far Riverside's been playing pretty good football. Shadow park has been playing decent football. They dropped a couple passes.

Their clock management has not been perfect. More importantly, Riverside is just playing big compared to the size of the roster and the size of their guys. Their quarterback, Jake Gaffney, the 6 foot 2 junior in only his second game as the varsity quarterback, has been pretty phenomenal. So with that out of the way, let's talk about our first half recap for tonight. Scoring hasn't been a ton of it.

Early on, Rams got down the field with the help of a couple of big plays and a couple of penalties. On their first drive of the game, the quarterback, Jake Gaffney came on the field as the kicker. He put in a field goal to make it three nothing in the first quarter. Shadow park comes right back out on the field. They get all the way down and they respond.

A couple deep passes put him in the red zone. Trey Dickerson turns and hands off to Beckett Ensminger, the 511 senior. The second team, all greater Spokane Lake running back from last year. He's a physical guy. He shakes and breaks tackles with ease and that is what he did down at the goal line.

Field goal and in seven to three, that is your halftime scoring. Update Terms of the vibe Update. Sheetl park looks like the more complete football team tonight. But there is a good chance that Riverside just ends up playing a better football game in the second half of this one. So we've got about 11 and a half minutes until the second half kicks off.

Let's get to our halftime scoreboard updates tonight. Man. We have got a good schedule of games across the Greater Spokane League also just in the Eastern Washington area. We talked about these on the pregame show, but in case you're just joining us, man, are we happy about the slate we have tonight. You should be watching KHQ tonight at 11 o' clock to watch their highlight wrap up show because it is going to be good starting off with Moscow Pullman.

I'm so happy we get that game this early in the season. Cole. I know they're crossed a rivalry. I know it happens, but I always love it when rivalries don't have to wait until late October. Oh yeah, you get it out of the way early.

You know, there's not as much buildup but, but that passion really comes out in week one when you got, when you got your rival just across the way and certainly one of the most historic rivalries in all of Eastern Washington. Yeah, yeah, they have, there's a lot of history down there and historically those two, those two teams don't really get along. So it's, it's very passionate. Elsewhere tonight, Kellogg, Deer Park, a fun little game. East Valley at Lakeside, Central Valley, Lewis and Clark.

I might be wrong about one, about that one, but I know we said on the broadcast that our spider sense were tingling about this game, which is currently Shadow Park. 7, Riverside 3. Rams are given the Highlanders a scare. I think Lewis and Clark might keep that closer than most people think. Yeah, yeah.

Definitely has an opportunity to be a great game and come all the way down to the wire similar to what we're watching here tonight. It's been a great game. Nice cool evening out here at Union Stadium and I'm excited for the second half. Elsewhere, Ferris and Cheney going at it. Mead and U High.

We talked at the pregame show about the fact that Mount Spokane really surprised a lot of people last week with how good they looked. It Is funny though to get an insight into the brain of a 20 of a 17 year old high school football player, Cole. Because you know, really how Mount Spokane did against UHAI should have no impact about how Mead thinks tonight they're going to do against uhai. But you know, sometimes you just can't help but, but let, let other games impact the way you think about your game. Oh yeah, you're, you're constantly making those comparisons and you know, you, you play the same team, you, you base it off that score, right?

No question about it. Elsewhere in the GSL tonight, Mount Spokane at Ridgeline. Mount Spokane I think put up something like 35, 36 points against Uhai in week one. A lot of people thought the Wildcats would take a step back this year considering all the guys they lost on last year's great team. It sounds like maybe not sounds like the Wildcats are back again here, Cole.

Well, the Wildcats have historically kind of created this culture, you know, which, which really enables young guys to come in at a young age and make plays and contribute early and it really, really kind of makes that transition seamless as you get older. All right, we've got some halftime scores in for some of these games. Central Valley 14, Lewis and Clark seven in the second quarter. Here come the Tigers. Yep, yep, we'll look for a second half comeback here.

Interested to see what happens as we get ready for the second tonight on the Arby's GSL game of the week on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM. I'm Greg Talbot joined tonight by former Eastern defensive star Cole Carstetter. Cole, you just said that. You told me.

While you're in commercial break, I'd like to expand on that for the audience. You said conditioning might become an issue in the second half. Which team do you mean that for? I think that what we'll find coming out into the third and fourth quarter here is that Schadl's depth will really, you know, play into their favor. Riverside just came out of the locker room with 40 seconds left.

You know, they're looking to, you know, sustain some of that energy, get their breath back because I think it's going to be a long second half for those guys over on the Rams sideline. I think you Might be right about that. When you look at the size of the roster, is Shadow park not the biggest roster in the gsl? I mean, Central Valley, Mead, Mount Spokane, those rosters have a lot of kids. Shadow park, not exactly that, but I'd say Riverside is what the roster may be.

Three fifths the size of Shadow Parks. Maybe if that. Greg, you know, if Gaffney can continue to have his linemen, you know, block hard and continue to stay aggressive, you know, they got a shot. But looking at the sidelines here, it might be troublesome down the stretch. But again, in case you're just joining us for our broadcast tonight, it is less than a one score game.

It is Shadow Park 7, Riverside 3. And in case you weren't with us, here's how it happened. First drive of the game for Riverside, they got down the field, kick the field goal. It felt like they should have scored a touchdown on that drive. In hindsight, they might wish they hadn't settled goal.

Yeah, I think that they might be, you know, coming down the wire here and thinking if we could have that one back. They had a lot of momentum going into that, that field goal there. And so they might look back and think of it as a missed opportunity. One other thing we saw at halftime, Trey Dickerson was out here really early. The Shadow park quarterback.

How do you look to you? Yeah, Trey, Trey was out here, looked like he was warming up his arm. I'm not sure if they're, you know, anticipating, you know, more pass, first game plan. Coming into the second half, it looks like he's stretching down here on the sidelines, just getting geared up and going to come out with his hair on fire. Hair on fire.

You said that now twice about what we might see out of Shadow park here. Diagnose this offense for me coming into this game, we said with your keys to the game. They wanted to spread it out to different receivers. We have one catch for Cam Odell, one for Jacob Boston, one for Jordan Deaver. The passing game has not been as great for Shadl as we maybe thought.

Yeah, they seem to have kind of went away from the pass game a little bit more and kept it in between the lines, in between the hash marks in the trenches with a lot of QB run game and a lot of split action. Beckett Ensminger, their 5 foot 11 senior running back, the second team all GSL runner, they've relied on him tonight more than I maybe thought they would. Yeah, I think, you know, playing, playing a Riverside team, they're, they're trying to wear Those guys out on the other sideline, they want to take them, you know, try to make them tired because they've got less guys.

They got less guys. You know, it's, it's a long game and, you know, the more you can pound it, the more taxing it is on your body. Did we see Riverside look tired at all in the first half? Are you thinking we're going to start seeing that toward the end of the third? We'll see here.

You know, it's usually this first drive that sets the tone. We'll see how, you know, they went into the locker rooms, let's see what adjustments they made. But usually it's this first series that sets the tone of the rest of the second half. Well, we are just getting started with a great weekend of football on your radio here tonight on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM.

Coming up tomorrow, big one Eastern Washington at Oregon. Cole, you're a former Eastern defensive star. What's the vibe inside the program this year? How are people feeling? You know, the vibe is good.

Coach Best is starting his sixth season. You know, they're a gritty team. They've lost a lot of high caliber recruits, but it's not going to be easy going down there into Austin. They're very loud, but, you know, they're a gritty team and hopefully Gunner can, you know, create some, create some, you know, magic down there and throw a couple touchdown passes and keep the game competitive.

Obviously the knock on him throughout his whole career and continues to be as he takes over. His quarterback this year is his size, but I thought it looked pretty good against Tennessee State last week. Yeah, no, he's a, he's a real competitor. He spent the last five years, you know, working his way up, working as a walk on all the way through to the starting quarterback. And he did a fantastic job on his first outing throwing five touchdown passes.

Like I said, Coach Best is a real gritty guy and they got a real gritty team, won 70% of their last, you know, over their last five seasons. So they're gritty and they'll, they'll hang in there. They're gritty and they'll hang in there. They're taking on Oregon tomorrow. That's a big one.

At Austin, the stadium, 5:30pm that game, I don't have it in front of me. I would imagine it'll be the Pac12 network on TV. More importantly, listen to it here on this very radio station. Paul Sorensen, Larry Weir will have the call. Yeah.

The halftime is over. The teams are out there. Fatal park will kick off from the 40 yard line on the right side of the field. Their classic uniforms, green tops, black bottoms and that lemon lime colored Gatorade helmet. And numbers.

Those have of course been updated since the old days when it was just yellow on the left side of the field. Ready to return the kick. The Riverside Rams, here comes a low line drive kick. High bouncing 30 yard line. Gaffing to receive.

He's got it tackled around the shoulders at the 32. So good field position for Riverside as they take over. Down seven to three. Yeah, they're going to get some good field position here. That was a little squib kick.

You know, they're hoping that Riverside can't quite corral that ball and Chadle might get an opportunity to get the ball back. And that was the second half kickoff brought to you by Papa Murphy's change. The way you pizza. Riverside 1 and O on the season. They beat Little St.

Mary's out of Idaho last week. Here comes their quarterback, Jake Gaffney. Six foot two, skinny, right handed. He was the backup last year, but he's been in the Riverside program since grade school. So he knows this team, he knows this system.

And they're only down seven to three as they start the second half. Comes out with two backs. With him in the backfield poles. He'll run it himself up to the 33 yard line before he's pushed back maybe a yard. Yeah, they're, they're really keen in on Gaffney now.

All eyes seem to be on him and they're, they're really gonna. It looks like Shadow park went into the locker room and said that their focus is going to be stopping 13 the second half. And you tell me we have seen Cooper Eagle make a couple of catches. We have seen them target Colton Ackerman. Tyler Lynz has run the ball, but really it's just been Gaffney tonight.

I mean, if we're being honest. Yeah, he's going to have to spread it out here to a couple other receivers and running backs. Take a Little pressure off him, you know, keep, keep Shadl a little bit more disciplined about covering everyone else. Gain of 1 second, down and 9. He drops back, looks left, looks right, pumps, steps up in the pocket, throws over the middle.

Man, that could have hit three or four hands. He was targeting Colden Ackerman, but that, that pass falls way incomplete. It'll be third and nine. Yeah, they're trying to stretch the field there, you know, open up some, some space for the running game. And I almost thought, I think he thought he was going to be tackled.

That was such a convincing pump fake. I think he thought he was going down. Yeah, yeah, he was under duress there. He, he was looking to scramble. Thank, thank goodness he got out of it.

When it talked to the coaches on this Riverside staff as we did this week, they said that Gaffney is fast and smart. He just needs to work on his arm strength and his decision making. But that only comes with varsity reps. It's only his second game as QB1 for the Riverside Rams. Here it comes out of the gun.

It's third down and 10. Little swing pass out to the left side. He's got Gavin Jaeger, his first catch of the night. Maybe back to the line of scrimmage. Not nearly enough.

Fourth down and nine, they will punt. Gosh, that was a good open field tackle by number 24 there. It's hard to get those guys down in wide open space and, and he did a fantastic job there. Tyler Yager making the catch under their two way player for Shadow park, one of their running backs and receivers as well. So fourth down and 10, man, it was a loss of one on the play.

That's a tough beat. Gaffney will kick. He's ready to kick it away back from his own 20 yard line on the left side of the field. And Jordan Deaver waiting on the shield. Park 30 on the right side of the field.

Punches in the air, left to right, fair catch called for. Takes a good bounce at the 40 yard line. That's what it'll rest. 10, 23 to go, shadow park comes back out and I think, Cole, this drive might tell us everything we need to know about how the rest of the game is going to go. Yeah, this, this is going to be a tone setter for the Shadow Park Highlanders.

We'll see what Trey comes out and let's see if he can really put some pressure on Riverside. Listen, those Riverside cheerleaders and student section on the far side of the field, they don't know they're the away team tonight, Cole, they're being loud. No, no, they're doing a good job and they're trying to create some of that momentum and energy for their defense to really hold strong here as Shadow park comes out for their first drive in. Second half. Shadow 7, Riverside 3.

Here come the Highlanders out on a spread formation. Shotgun. Here comes Dickerson. Hands off to Ensmon. Minger dives forward through the guards.

Got to the 44, gain of four. How's a good little collision down there for a four yard gain? They will take that every time. Four yards is a guaranteed first down by the end of the series. However, Riverside, considering they're a smaller team, they've been really good at stopping the run tonight.

I've been very impressed. Yeah, they've been pretty impressive down there in the trenches. We'll see if they can sustain the pace that I think Shade will about to, you know, put on them with the hurry up offense. Second down and four. Deaver split to the near side.

Odell to the far side. Two men in the slot now it's three receivers to the right side. Here it comes. Dumps it off near side. Jordan Deaver one on one in space.

Spins off a man. I thought he was down. He was down at the 47 yard line. An unbelievable open field tackle by Tyler Lenz, although Deaver did not think it was a tackle. Cole.

No, Deaver slip and you know, he's a, he's a playmaker. So they're going to continue to give him the ball, get him into space, and he's going to continue to make plays. Riverside really needs to hone in on number 80 in green. So Jordan Deaver there spun up thinking he was going to take it to the house. They'll say his knee was down, so they're going to call it.

Third down and five. That their own 45 on the right side of the field. Driving right to left. They got to get to the 50. Here comes Dickerson out of a deep shotgun.

Three receivers to his right, one to his left. It's a high snap. It's a bad snap. He steps up, he's going to run past the 50, 45, 40, 35. Down to the 31 yard line.

Man, oh man. Jake Gaffney ran him out of bounds on defense. That play should have been broken up, but Trey Dickerson with a big name in orthodontics. First down, but we've got a flag back at the 50. That looks like holding to me.

That. That's going to be holding. I think this is coming Back, which is really unfortunate for the Shadow Park Highlanders. Trey made another impromptu play there, missed his running back on the mesh and created a really, really good play for the Shadow Park Highlanders. Holding again.

They'll repeat it. So now this looks like it's going to be third down and nine. They'll replay it here. Yeah, look to get Deaver over the. Over the middle here on a post route.

They are going to love going to Jordan Deaver in the second half. They don't. They know they didn't find him enough in the first 24 minutes. No, no, you can't, you can't get the ball to that guy enough. He's a, he's a true playmaker.

Third down and nine. Two receivers split each way. Wide open spread. More nation for Shadow Park. Here it comes.

Dickerson's gonna go deep into coverage. He's got Deaver. No. It's tipped away at the 25 yard line. HOHGAFFNEY, the quarterback on defense with a near interception and a huge pass breakup to force 4th and 10 for Schadl.

Gosh, what a heads up play by Gaffney. Wow. Sitting back there in the post knows that Trey's gonna go to his best receiver. You know, heads up play by Gaffney out of the safety spot there. If he wasn't heads up, that would have been a touchdown.

That had the potential to be a big, big touchdown play. So Shadow park will only stay up 7 to 3. They will not score on that drive and they will punt. Here comes a snap right boot into it. Good kick.

Will bounce down ready to receive it. Braxton Welch, he won't get a chance. It's over his head. Rolls down to the 20 yard line. That's where Shadow park will touch it.

858 to go in the third quarter. About nine minutes left. Still seven to three, Shadow Park. But that was a huge, huge stop for Riverside, Cole. Because if Shade was going to come out and win this game easily, they would have scored there.

Yep, yep, that was, that was a big stop on third down and a costly penalty. You by the Shadow Park Highlanders that, you know, similar to what we were talking about, Riverside in the first quarter. He's scrambling around as the quarterback. I am really, really impressed with his conditioning. 8:45 on the game clock. I have the sneaking suspicion there's a high schooler who doesn't know how to run the high school football game clock tonight. Cole, what do you think?

Yeah, it looks like we got some youth on the scoreboard tonight. Okay, so they're setting the clock for 8, 45, 1st and 10 up to the 37 yard line. Here comes a sweet play along the outside to Colton Ackerman. They've been trying to get this working all night. Almost got the corner.

Gain a three. Yeah, that was a. That was a good stretch play. Jet sweep to stretch the field there. They're trying to get these guys left and right so that Gaffney can come counter him right up the middle.

They've been trying to get the ball into colder, man, Ackerman's hands, really. He's their number one receiver. He's got a great body. Six two, one, nine five. They just haven't been able to throw it really into space.

Yeah, they haven't had too many opportunities. They've had some success on the ground, and I think they're going to stick with it. You know, our keys to the game were, you know, get into your rhythm, you know, give the quarterback success. Second down and seven. Here it comes.

And it's going to be Gaffney keeping it again. This time he runs up the middle, tries to hurdle a guy taken down at the ankles. Gain a two. This is going to be third down and maybe a long three, short four. Yeah, up to the 45.

This is. This is a big third down for these guys. They've kind of generated some momentum and after the last stop, so look for them to convert here and really, really kind of put some pressure on Schadl. Wow. Referees really giving this a very generous spot as the quarterback fell forward.

They're going to mark this ball at the 45 yard line. He's only got to get to the 47. It's third down and two, and this might be easier than we thought for Riverside. Handle up the middle. No, sir.

Tyler Lynn's taken away back by a linebacker who came flying in to force fourth down and a loss of what? Loss of three on the play, number 50 was in the backfield. Before they even know it, Kenny Hutchinson. Kenny. Kenny was in the backfield before Jake knew what to do.

Gosh, that was a great play by number 50 for a tackle for loss. Was that the best play of the night for Shadow so far? I think maybe that, that, that could have been, you know, the, the game changer for sure. All right, so now both teams forced a punt here. 6:52, 651, 650.

Ticking on the clock, still 7 to 3. Shadow park on top of Riverside. Punt left to right across your radio dial. Takes a pretty good bounce and takes a shield bounce to the 21 before Riverside knocks it down. So Shayla park now takes over after the punt on their own 21 yard line on the right side of the field.

I'm not sure what I thought the third quarter was going to be so far, Cole, but it wasn't this. Yeah, no. I'm surprised that on that third down that they elected to go to the running back instead of keeping it in the hands of Jake. Jake, you know, has kind of been their place playmaker all night. I would have liked to see them keep the ball in Jake's hands.

Alright, so out come to Shield Park Islanders. They scored a touchdown in the first half. That's why it's seven to three. But they've taken a couple of deep shots. Is the interesting Cole here, they just haven't connected on those.

They connect on one. This game might be done. Yeah, no, they're looking to really stretch the defense here and they've just been a couple fingertips away from making some big, big plays. Let's see what Trey does here. Here they come from their own 21.

Dickerson out of the shotgun, turns hands off. That is to Nick Tilton. Gain of six on the play. Got to the right hash mark. That'll, that'll.

You'll take that every time. And here come the Shadow park student section. They're loud tonight. Referee's gonna call that a gain of seven actually. So second down in shorts and only one deep safety back here for Riverside.

They're counting on Shadow running the ball. But this is where Dickerson has gone over the top tonight. Yeah, this. They'll probably stay on the ground here. Get the first down, second and along two and Dickerson will keep run left side.

So this is probably the game in a play. Shadl park leading 7 to 3. Riverside's got no timeouts left. If Shadow converts, this game's done because they can run the clock out over the course of the next couple minutes, assuming they don't get taken down for loss. If Riverside stops them on 4th down here on the right side of the field around the 20, then they will get it and go 80 yards with no timeouts.

In about three and a half minutes, this might be the game. This is shaping up to be the most important play of the day here. Shayla park comes back on an offense. Beckett Ensminger is there and the quarterback Trey Dickerson is on the sideline. They'll run the Wildcat again.

Let's get to our recap in this game. Riverside came out looking pretty good right away. They did not put Shadow. Park came out looking really good. They got down pretty deep into Riverside territory, turned it over on fourth down.

Riverside marches all the way back down the field. They send out their quarterback, Jake Gaffney to kick a field goal. It goes in. Then late in the first quarter, Shield park responds very early in the game when they went on the ground to beckon Ensminger in our play of the game. Just had a little lapse there, you know, towards the end of the game about not throwing it away and living to fight another day. They felt the need to put a beating on you high this week.

Anytime you can, you know, shut, shut the other team out and get that goose egg on the board is destruction and domination.

Speaking of Mount Spokane, poor ridgeline, 46 nothing. Yeah, that's about scoring every single series. So that's a tough one for the Ridgeline. You know, they're young, hopefully they can bounce back once they get, you know, their foundation, you know, set. But that's, that's a tough game.
