We're joined here on the pregame show by Paul Manfred, the G Prep AD coach. I also work in education and all the talk coming into the school year was so nice that it's going to be the first year in a while that it seems like we have a sense of normalcy. Finally, for these student athletes, what's the vibe here at G Prep? The vibe is exactly the same. Our teacher Meetings leading into school were absurdly normal.

People are happy. They were asking about dress code and can kids have, you know, food in the hallway and this and that. Not one mention of. Of COVID restrictions or masks. So it was.

It was an extremely normal start to the school year for us. We've been here for three days. We started on Wednesday and had three great days. So a pretty phenomenal year for Gonzaga Prep football last year. Of course, undefeated in the regular season, made it to the playoffs, lost to Lake Stevens.

That was a tough one. But so many guys on your team coming back. Football expected to put on a good show. What other fall sports are expected to show out? Well, this fall, you know, we are.

We. The best thing about our fall sports is we have more kids out than we know what to do with than we've had in years. We've got 60 freshman kids, 62 freshman football players out. We've got 70 or 80 ninth through 12th or 10th through 12th graders. Volleyball, soccer, they're just.

The participation is great and that's what's been fun to see a lot of energy. We've got some new coaches with our volleyball program and our girls soccer program. So a lot of great energy. And just seeing the kids out there after school doing their thing for the last couple of weeks has been great. And so we started games in the last couple days and it's just been fun.

What's the vibe around the football program coming into this year? I know that they were hoping to make it a little deeper in the playoffs last year than they did. Yeah, you know, probably the same thing this year, but we've got a lot of kids returning and we just. We've got, like I said, depth in numbers. I think we'll be okay just because we've got a lot of kids out and we keep it pretty simple.

We're trying to stay low key and just easy ease into the retirement thing in about 80 years. That's exactly right. So like you said, Cheney and G Prep coming your way here on the top of the hour on the Arby's GSL Game of the Week on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM. If you were just looking at the records from last year as we come into week one, you at home might be thinking Cheney and G Prep.

Yikes, that's going to be a blowout. Here's the thing. Yes, G Prep did go undefeated in the regular season last year, made it to the second round of the playoffs, lost to a really good Lake Stevens team that ended up making a little run of their own in the playoffs.

And yeah, Cheney did go 1 and 9 and they only scored 36 points all last year. However, this Cheney team brings back a lot of guys, including their 6 foot 4, 200 pound second year starter, senior quarterback and Jacob Valance. They're bringing back a couple of really good upperclassmen, running backs and their most important two receivers in Josh Bingham and Curran Moore. Yes, G Prep is the favorite coming into this game. However, Paul Sheeney actually has a little bit of a shot if they can get their offense going.

Well, they got to protect the quarterback and this is going to be a spread offense. They're going to, they're going to spread it around. Bobby Bird, the old offensive lineman from the Cougs wsu, big tall guy, knows how to block and you know, they, they took a beating last year because they were young and it just, it's, that's the nature of the beast.

But that helps you in years like this coming back, you're going to have more experience prep. You know, they lose Ryan McKenna, I mean he was 65% of their offense. Unbelievable football player, could have played, he'd been a great college safety, but he's going to go on and play hockey, you know, and that's the kind of guy he is. So the question mark is will Jojo Shortell, who's been a backup I think for about 30 years, is going to come in and great, smart kid, learn from one of the best in McKenna. And they've got all seniors on the offensive side and they've got a bunch of seniors on defense.

This is a very old, very mature team. But it's run by the qb. How he plays is how this Godzaga prep team will roll. Well, that sounds suspicious, like some Paul Keys to the game. Well, I think, you know, from, from the standpoint of the Blackhawks, you know, they're going to, they're going to spread it and I like their quarterback. He's a big tall kid. You know, he's got, he's got some receivers out there that can get after it, running backs that are pretty good and fast. They're going to try to spread you out, they're going to try to get some isolation one on one. But Gonzaga perhaps not a team that's going to sit back and play zone.

They're going to pressure you first, second, third, fourth and fifth down if they have to. So they're going to do a lot of disguising. H. T. higgins, our D coordinator, has been around for many, many years and he's really good.

So I think for Cheney tonight, come out, be consistent, don't kill yourself. Don't turn the football over. Don't lose the field position battle. Put some drives to get, get some confidence as the game goes on. Put.

You've got to, you can't make mistakes against this Gonzaga prep team because they'll take you apart on prep side. Do what prep does. They just come out and roll. They're very good on defense, all seniors. On offense they've got three running backs that can, that can cause problems.

They've got an excellent receiver in Bo Howell who's also a captain. He's a 6 foot, 170 pound kid that can run very good offensive line. On the defensive side they are pressure, disguise pressure and they create turnovers and create havoc should be an interesting game. The big key tonight for g prep can JoJo Shortel start to step out of Ryan McKenna's shadow after all these years and learn when to pull, when to punch and run? That option we'll see on the other side of this commercial break.

From what it sounds like, main running back in there, Jeremiah Hubbard. But they've got three at tight end, it's Gabe Bradley. They got three wide out starting. Cordell Lair, Josh Bingham and Camden Collins. And here's their line.

Matari Jarmes, Anthony Moore, Cole Palmer, Caden Stratley and Eli Axtell. Here's a look at their defense. Devon Perot, Jorge Munoz, George Serbot and Alex hubbard. The starting four, they've got three linebackers. They run a 4 3.

It's Micah Ragazza Barrasa, one of their three running backs. Corn Moore, one of the great tight ends. Also in there at linebacker. And Tucker Von Warmer, the last linebacker. Then the DBs, Owen Scott, Silas Brown, Josh Bingham and James Guski.

Lot of experience for a team that was not good last year, Paul. Yeah. No, really. And they're going to be tested tonight. You've got to be able to stop the A gap on this option.

Stop that fullback. If you don't, you're in big time trouble. And prep will pressure you up the middle and then go wide. Here's G Prep starting lineup JoJo Churchell finally gets his look as a senior quarterback replacing Ryan McKenna. As you know, they have three different running backs at G Prep, starting with Lilo Michele.

Also Nick Binky and Sam Ohman. They're all back from last year. Their wideouts Max Johnson and Bo Howell and they're starting five Mitch Switzki, Tim McCann, Patrick Riley, Drake Watko and Nick McGann. The starting defense, a lot of names back. Hughes, Nian Yishu and Luke Miller up front, along with Christian Martinez and Kevin McKiernan.

McKiernan is getting some college looks. He's good. He can play. He's an all state candidate and will definitely play at the next level. Very good football.

He's getting a lot of looks. The linebackers this year, Nate Boyhum, Jackson Crocker. They run a four to five and then they have five guys back in the secondary. Tommy Camp, Preston, Yim, Jager, Grimsby, Kaivon Curler and Ryan Jackson. Three juniors and two sophomores.

If there's an area weakness right now on the experience side, it would be the secondary and you've got a passing team with Cheney that wants to spread you out and throw it. The problem is, can they protect their quarterback and give him time to throw? That's going to be the big question tonight. That's exactly right. Should be very interesting. Two teams that want to start out one and oh, and only one's going to come out of here that way. Yeah, these two teams, Gonzaga Prep and Cheney. Like we said at the beginning of the pregame show a few minutes ago, Paul, these are teams that if you look at their records, you go, oh no, Porcini Week one. But you talked a second ago about the starting lineups.

G Prep is really inexperienced on their secondary and their quarterback is inexperienced in terms of the amount of time he played last year. Jojo Shortell those are two spots where Cheney could take advantage of Cheney blitzes and makes G Prep give up the football a couple times. It feels like Cheney might have a little bit of a game tonight. Well, you get some turnovers. You've got to get extra possessions against prep because prep is going to do what they do.

They're going to wear you down as the game goes on. You've got to stop the fullback dive. You've got to play over the top man on the outside because they're not going to throw a lot. But when they do, the guy's usually wide open because they everybody starts creeping up, stop the run. So Cheney's got to be disciplined, they got to have good eyes and most importantly, they can't turn the football over and hurt themselves with penalties.

Kickoff is getting ready. The anthem has been played. People are setting into their seats, getting ready to watch Friday Night football. And welcome to the gsl. First night of the season.

Beautiful night, hot temperatures, little muggy out here, kind of a cool thing. And if you're a football player, you get nice and lathered up and nothing I didn't like anything more than running down on the kickoff, getting a chance to try to blow somebody up and get your head in the game there and get you ready to play. And that's what these young men are thinking about right now, getting ready to go to start the season. It's Cheney and Gonzaga Prep here on the RV's GSL game of the week, week one of our fall schedule here on 700 ESPN and 105. 3 FM.

Greg Talbot, Paul Sorensen with you here tonight. And Paul, we were talking to our good friend from the Spokesman review, Dave Nichols, the other night in the Spokane Indians press box. He was saying, coming into this year, it's very much G Prep and everyone else in the GSL, number seven in the four, eight polls on the statewide level, they earned it because of what they've done with their tradition.

Ron Hawkins led them to a state title back in the day, was an outstanding football player here, and went on to Washington State and then a great career, you know, on the Alliance Insurance side. So it's, it's nice to see. And a lot of our sponsors have a tie to the, the Greater Spokane League, Greg, and that's what makes this thing cool. They're giving back now after they've gone off to school, they're coming back here, they're raising their kids here and they're keeping that tradition alive. This is going to be a fun season of high school football. So let's talk a little bit about what we expect here before kickoff in the gsl. Paul. So Gonzaga Prep consensus number one for what it sounds like. Sounds like the Meat Panthers may be bypassing Mount Spokane for that two spot.

Well, it'll be interesting. By the way, just got a score from our buddy Larry Weir. They played a game, LC Ferris, first game up at Ferris at their field at the school since 1996. Final score, Lewis and Clark, 36 Ferris 6 LC's off to a one to nothing lead in the, you know, one and oh record in the GSL. Ferris drops to oh and one.

And the battle of the South Hill gets off to an early start here on September 2nd, so kind of cool to see that. And looks like prep's gonna kick off and Cheney's going to return. All right, so the Gonzaga Bullpups. You're listening on here on local radio. On 700.

You know exactly what they look like. White helmets, white pants, navy jerseys and white lettering. The Cheney Blackhawks and black helmets, red pants, white jerseys with black lettering. And this will be the opening Papa Murphy's kickoff of the season. Papa Murphy's change the way you pizza.

Paul sorensen. We've got 12 minutes on the scoreboard here. Let's go. Let's go. That's right.

It should be interesting to see a kick goes in the end zone. It's automatically down. Bring the ball out. Do not turn the football over. Cheney.

Be smart about what you do. You don't have to win the game on the first possession, but you've got to start establishing what you're good at, which is spreading the football out and trying to get those receivers open. Number 85 for Gonzaga Prep, Matthew Herzog puts the ball on the 40 yard line on the left side of the field. Genie Blackhawks on the right side of the field. They'll be driving right to left after this kickoff.

Here comes Herzog. He's got his right hand in the air under a beautiful night sky here at Gonzaga Prep. That kick is in the air. It's an end over end kick down to the five yard line. And we have whistles on the field on the opening kickoff of the year.

In rare form right now. They're gonna nail the guy for an offsides. He was like a half a foot over. But you know, hey, the officials need to get loosened up too. And.

And by the way, I'm gonna just make this pitch right now. The. We've got a lot of older gentlemen out there on the field. We need new blood in every sport in terms of officials. I've been a baseball, basketball and football guy for many, many years.

Don't do football anymore, but still do baseball and basketball. We're getting older and we're not getting younger people to come in and replace us. I can't imagine not going to have enough people out there to do games if this continues. I say I can't imagine why there were more. There aren't more people my age wanting to referee.

Paul Considering all the wonderful. Considering all the wonderful parents. Well, they're getting better. You know, they've got to figure out we'll have to take them to, to, you know, officiating, not yelling school. But then we make some bonehead mistakes.

And I did the same thing when my kids played. I was yelling at the officials as well. And that's the rite of passage. All right, so we're going to try this again. Matthew Herzog once again walks his way back to the 20 yard line.

The ball now on the 35. He's got his right hand in the air. Kicks his right leg in the air, gets loose, runs toward the 30. The 35, kicks it up in the air. It's an end over end kick again.

Line drive down to about the 10 yard line, rolls out of the back of the end zone and that's a touchback. And this is where we'll see the Cheney offense the first time this year. All right, so it's time to see this Cheney Blackhawks offense for the first time in 2022. They're led by the 6 foot 4, 195 pound right handed quarterback, Jacob Valance. He had a good first year last year, Paul, but yeah, really inexperienced team around him. Yeah, and he's just going to need some help. He's got to get protection up front.

He's good when he gets time. Every quarterback can do that. But the time is going to be the key with this, this Gonzaga prep defense. They are going to pressure. So Valance comes out of the shotgun balls on the 20 on the right side of the field.

He stands back at the 15. He turns and hands off up the middle to Jeremiah Hubbard. He gets back to around the line of scrimmage. No, he's pushed backward. It's a loss of one or two on the play.

And here comes the G Prep defense. Nice job that time by McKiernan because he just stayed outside. Great leverage. Played defensive end that time and took on the offensive tackle. Leveraged the running back to the bounce of the outside.

He was there. Good outside support that time by him. Really no place to run up the middle. Outstanding job by Godzilla. Gonzaga Prep in their front four.

Cheney a loss of one on the first play of this season. So Valance, the right handed quarterback out of the gun. He's standing back at the 14 yard line. Flanked by the junior running back, the 5 foot 8, 185 speedy runner, Jeremiah Hubbard. Here comes a snap.

It's play action. Valance rolls outright, throws down the sideline. It's intercepted on the second play of the year. Tackled at the 20 yard line. Who was it that came up with that for G Prep?

What a way to start the season on defense. I couldn't tell. I think it was 20, either eight or nine as jersey, he's all. I think it was 28. That's Tommy Camp, the junior.

First interception. He's been a ball magnet as a sophomore. He had a couple picks last year. So that's what. That's exactly what Cheney can't do.

Great field position by Gonzaga Prep interception. And he just slid right underneath that route. Read the quarterback. Big pressure on him. He had no place to go.

Unbelievable. The second play of the season. And now Gonzaga Prep takes over on Cheney's 18 yard line on the right side of the field. JoJo Shortell, his first snap is the varsity quarterback. He turns and slings it off to the right to Max Johnson.

He makes it up to about the 10 yard line. He spun down for a gain of 5 yards. Nice job by Johnson. Just getting upfield and you know, doing a good job of making plays there. So excellent effort by him.

And a nice little throw by by short towel. Easy throw from one. To talk to coach Dave McKenna about this week, Paul. It sounds like they're going to try to make it a little bit easier here for Jojo Shortell because he's not entirely used to the offense. Well, that's what you do.

You get him into a little bit of a rhythm, you make him feel comfortable, let him get his reads. And then when they can run up the middle like that, untouched until you get to the goal line doesn't matter. Handoff of the middle. It's Lilo Michele untouched into the end zone. Touchdown.

Gonzaga Prep man. How long did that take? We are less than two minutes into the season. A Michele touchdown up the middle at six nothing. Bullpups.

That was your STCU touchdown drive. Recap. Nice job. Also, Damon Orthodontics. First down.

Great job that time. Very well blocked on the right side. They just blew Cheney off the ball. And again, first play, they came out of the chute, they threw the football, gained five yards. Second play.

Then you got, you know, the running back Lelo there 23, just going right side and that was easy. Pat, line drive kick. It is up. It is good. It is seven nothing.

And over end down to the left side of the field. And it goes down to about the 15 yard line. Man, that did not take long. The Cheney Blackhawks began this season with a 1 yard loss on the ground. Then they tried to pass it off.

Play action. It was intercepted two plays later, a 10 yard touchdown run by Gonzaga. Perhaps running back one of their three. That one was the senior, Lila Michele. He's a downhill runner.

Boy, did he look like a downhill runner. He took it all the way into the end zone and it's seven nothing. Gonzaga Prep. A minute and a half in the season. 10:29 to go here in the first quarter from Gonzaga Prep.

This thing might get ugly in a hurry if she doesn't have a little more fight in them than that. So here come the Blackhawks. That kick did go out of bounds. They'll take it from the 35 yard line on the right side of the field. The Cheney Blackhawks tonight going right to left across your radio dial and they're already down 7 nothing.

90 seconds into the season. Here it Comes play action. No, it's a hand up to Jeremiah Hubbard. He gets to the left side off the run, he gets back to the 35. No game.

See, that's what happens. You get in a situation where you make a mistake, you get an interception. Just a great read that time, you know, on the interception by Tommy Camp. But again, then you get a little bit conservative and that's where prep takes advantage of you. They put you in third long and then guess what?

H. T. higgins and company dial up the blitzes and they come from all over the place. So, you know, unless you can break a big play, unless you do a little screen or find a seam, get a little time, it's going to be tough because this, this plays right into Gonzaga Prep's defensive philosophy.

No gain on the play. Second down and 10 for Cheney here at their own 35 yard line. Two receivers split to the left and one to the right for the senior quarterback, Jacob Valance. He puts Lahr in motion. Cordell are gets it on the sweep handoff and he's tackled for a loss of five.

And that's where I think we're going to see trouble is up front. I think Gonzaga Prep is just there a 4A school, and you're going up against a 3A school that moved up from the 2A level. You know, Cheney's got the numbers out there and they're doing a better job. You got to give, you know, head coach Bobby Bird credit. He staying patient with these guys.

He's trying to figure out a way. There's Dave McGahn, the old Arby's owner out here. He's been a Gonzaga prep supporter. Great community guy walking around enjoying this. I'll bet she's going to get a Slurpee.

He needs a little. Or a classic roast beef. Or a classic roast beef. Or a twofer. He's gonna get two for the price of six bucks.

I like that. All right, third down and 15 here for Cheney. Paul, we're back in rare form, buddy. Here comes the snap. Valance throws over the middle into coverage off the hands of Cordell Lar.

But he got blown up as he tried to catch that ball. He put him right in the field of those linebackers. Yeah, and that was a PBU for. For Nate Bynum, the linebacker, the 6 foot 170 pounder and the young senior read that. I think it was a little bit tipped by the receiver, but that should have been pick number two, you know, on that.

And again, you're forcing into coverage. Great job of disguising that time. But what's going on with the quarterback? He's under serious duress. He's not able to set his feet and he's just having a tough time trying to find guys open.

Nine minutes flat to go here in the first quarter. Already seven nothing. Gonzaga Prep, in case you're tuning in, here comes the snap. The Cheney punches in the air, but barely. It's Bo Howard waiting to catch it down on the 40 yard line.

He calls for a fair catch. And that's where Gonzaga Prep will take over. Already, Paul. Technically their second offensive drive of the year. Nice job, Damon Orthodontist, your Spokane neighborhood orthodontist located on the north side the Valley.

Pretty good deal. Good deal. All right, here comes that when I was growing up. Here comes Gonzaga Prep for their second of drive of the year. Here comes Jortel.

Pitches along the outside to Nick Banky. He's past the 40 yard line, up to the 45, almost to the 50. Man, if he didn't get the first down, he got awfully close. He did not make it there. All right, so that clock.

Oh, he did get a first down. That is brought to you by Damon orthodontics. G preps, first of the year. He got up to the 50. Josh Bingham was on the tackle that time.

Had to come over from a safety spot to knock him down. Good blocking there. And they're not getting touched until they get a couple, you know, five, six yards downfield. That's boating very well for prop G Prepper on the option. Again, it's a pitch along the right side to same omen.

Past the 50, past the 45, past the 40, down to the 39. Back to back, Damon Orthodontics. First down for G Prep. Yikes, here come the bullpups. Nice run that time.

About 12 yards and just kind of weaving and serpentining his way up there. Very good blocking by the wide receivers downfield. And they have a little bit bigger physical presence in the corners at Cheney right now and they're taking advantage of that. You got down to the 38 yard line. An empty backfield here for Jojo Shortell.

He turns and swings off to his left, he's got Bo Howell for the first time this season. He's past the 35, down to the 32 yard line. A gain of about 8 yards. Not the last time this season we are going to see Bo Howell making a catch there, Paul. Now he's got one catch for eight yards and he's their guy captain as well.

The senior doing a nice job. Just flaring out of the backfield on the left side. Good blocking by the wide receiver Johnson down there to give him a few more yards after contact. I love that. They've already passed twice.

They're trying to get Chotelle in the. Fumbled in the move of passing the ball here. That's exactly. There's a fumble on the field at the 35 yard line. She's got it.

All right. The Blackhawks get it back. That's exactly what they needed. Prep was going to score there, Paul. Yeah, I think that was hubbard.

Alex Hubbard 40, that recovered the fumble and that's what they needed. They gave up one, they get one back. They're even now in the turnover thing and that's something again. And that was the option read. The fullback was diving over the A gap.

He tried to pull the ball out. The fullback tried to keep the ball. Ball went to the ground. That's the thing that, that McKenna was so good at last year was that read and that exchange between fullback and his ability to get to the end. When we talked to head coach Dave McKenna this week, he said Jojo Shortell has all the pieces.

He just needs to learn when to punch and when to pull. He needs experience. Yeah, that's what he needs. He just needs to play and, and have repetitions. It's repertoire.

That's what you need. You just need keep, keep the repertoire thing going. You're good. After the fumble, Cheney takes over on their own 34 yard line on the right side of the field. That's a handoff up the middle to Hubbard and he's met immediately loss of one.

Yeah, that was a serious stick there that time. I think that was Jacob Grimsley, 27, that came up from the safety spot there and he put helmet on shoulder pad and that was pretty much it for that play. So Cheney can force as many fumbles as they want, but I believe their largest gain of the season so far was that play for a yard and a half. So their offense needs to get going. Yeah, but you're playing against prep, so this, I mean, this is a tough out for any team.

I don't care what you're doing. And the biggest improvement for football teams is between the first and the second week. And you're going to see Cheney get much better because the level of competition will be more towards their suit. A deep eye formation. Three running backs are there.

For Valens it's play action. He moves to the left, dumps it off. It's a nice little catch by Alex Hubbard. He's past the 40 yard line, up toward the 45. If he didn't get the first down, it's very close.

Well, I think Hubbard did a nice job that time of going high and pulling that ball down and I, I actually thought he might have gotten the first down. Looks like he extended past the sticks. Sure enough, that's exactly what Cheney needs. You don't need 60 yard plays. Those are nice.

You need those 8, 9, 10 yard pops like he did. Nice job of rolling to his left side the QB and just firing that ball out there. Hubbard pulling it down and making a play. A demon orthodontics. First down for the Cheney Blackhawks.

Their first of the year. And here they come once again. That deep eye formation. One tight end split out each way. Three backs behind Jacob Valens, the six foot four right handed senior quarterback.

Here he comes from under center. It's a pitch to the right to Jeremiah Hubbard. He cuts up off tackle. He got up to about the 45 yard line. Nice little gain there.

Yeah, Luke Miller that time the, the captain, the six two 290 pounder. He came in and there looked like there was a hole there. Then number 92 kind of stepped in the middle and that's like running into a redwood tree. He just towers over people there and just absolutely clean that play up. And I think lost about a half actually he did.

They pushed him back there. It looked like he was going to cut through and he got. You know what happened? Someone got an arm around him and pulled him backwards as his body looked like it was going forward. Yeah, that's an owie.

Those hurt. Kind of clotheslined. That's what happened there. Legitimates not a penalty if they don't throw the flag. So.

So technically a loss of one back to the three back loki for Jacob Valance. He drops back. It's a pitch along the near side and this one's to Josh Bingham. He cuts up off tackle to the 45 yard line. Back to the line of scrimmage maybe a yard or two.

Yeah, that, that, that time. Just a nice job. Tommy Camp who had the interception earlier, came in, did a nice job. He's right position to make a play but kind of whiffed on the tackle there. So good.

A good block downfield. An excellent job by the fullback. Kind of blew up the outside linebacker and gave Cheney a chance there to get a decent play, but it's just nice pursuit by this guy Zaga prep team and now third and long. They're going to pin the years back and come after the quarterback. That's going to be third down and call it nine yards here for the Genie Blackhawks.

They have not passed it for gain yet this year. We'll see if they can here. Third down and nine, 5:45 to go here in the first quarter. We are ticking, we are moving fast. Valance looks to his left, looks to his right, gets a high snap and here we go.

Throws it over the middle. That was a nice little pass off the hands of a diving Josh Bingham, but it falls incomplete. Bingham's got to catch that ball. He's got to settle in the hole. That was actually a good throw by the quarterback.

He was thrown because you had a safety coming over there and so he threw back shoulder. Bingham continued the route but he didn't settle in the hole where he's supposed to be. And again, early season timing between wide receiver, quarterback. That time the wide receiver didn't help his QB make a play. All right, so Cheney had a chance there, couldn't capitalize.

Here comes a high snap, the kick is away, kicker gets run into. It's a short punt down to the 30 yard line. That won't even get to Bo Howell. He takes a really good G prep bounce and man, that's a tough break for Cheney. They fall out of the 50 yard line.

Here comes the pass from Shortell down the right sideline off the hands of Noah hallman.

It'll be second down and 10 and man Paul, we missed a first down over that commercial break, but the bullpups are already rolling again. Holman did a nice job getting up the sidelines there and Shortell just overthrew him. He just got excited. He was wide open. He had a receiver running right down the steam that drew the free safety in the corner.

So if he could have hit him in stride, he probably scores. That's that. Getting that repetition sitting there in the pocket making the throw under pressure. That's the thing that he's really got to get better at. And he will with experience.

435 to go in the first quarter here. Second and 10 for Gonzaga Prep. They're on the option and they pitch along the outside to Nick Banky. He's past the 30 yard line, 25, 20 on his feet to the 15 and pushed out of bounds. That's the name of orthodontics.

First down for the bullpups and they are on a roll. Stepped out of bounds stops the clock. 427. About 16 yards on that run. A great job, great block and I get a hurry up.

Offense preps getting right back to the Lyons Greenwich. That's going to wear Cheney out there trying to get subs in here and just a good job on that run to the left side. G Prep is moving. They got down to the 15 yard line. Up the middle they go this back to Neela, Nico Leland Michele.

He already has a touchdown this time stopped at the line of scrimmage. Yeah, that time. That was a good tackle that time by Devin Pereiro. The six 1,227 pound DN. He also had some help from Munoz55.

Those two guys were able to kind of stop that fullback dive on the left side there. Good play. Two receivers split to the left for G Prep. One to the right. Here comes a low snap to Howell.

He rolls out and he pitched along the outside To Sam Ohman, it looked like it was a keeper and said he's back to the line of scrimmage. Stopped for the second time in a row. That time on a pitch. Yeah, that time. You know, from that standpoint it was just a deal where Oman bellied back.

It looked like he went two or three yards behind on the pitch there. And that allowed Cheney's defense to rally a big third down here. Let's see if Cheney can get a stop and maybe force a field goal or make prep go for it. On fourth down. Third and 10 for G prep and Cheney jumped on the play.

That is a bummer because you just gave him five free yards. Yep. You stop the clock, you give him five. You got 339 to go here in the first quarter. Seven nothing right now.

Gonzaga Prep and they're going to mark off five yards and that's going to make much more manageable here. Third down now you're talking third and about four and a half. I think the defense was just excited. They made a nice play. But then he can't make a bonehead play.

That's a penalty thing. That drives coaches nuts. Four down linemen for the Blackhawks. Bullpups on the left side of the ball. Down on the Cheney 10 yard line on the right side of the field.

They got to get down to the five. They're checking to a different play right now. And let's see if they come back and go opposite side. It's McKayle in the backfield. He already has one rushing touchdown from the 10 yard line a couple minutes ago.

Here it comes. They'll give it to him again. The five yard line. The four dragged down at the three. So he's got a first down but did not get the end zone.

Yeah, that was a good read that time by. By Shortell because he was running down the line. He saw the end come up field. You see that belly button you hand off? If you see the shoulders, you know, you pitch it.

And just a good job of handing that ball off up the middle. 305 to go in the quarter. Handoff to Michaela. Up the middle again. Touchdown.

Bullpups the second for Lila Michele in the first quarter. Already 13 nothing. G Prep, about a four yard run that time. Very well blocked. I think they found, you know, running back here is doing an outstanding job.

And that's two rushing touchdowns. One on the turnover early. This one just an excellent, you know, kind of a bad punt. So you got a, you got an interception return that set up a short field 18 play drive and then a bad punt that's, you know, cut the field in half. Prep elite a lot.

Here's the pat. The swing, the kick up and good 14 nothing. G Prep. All right, Paul. Not an unexpected result.

The good news, I guess for Cheney is although you did give up a touchdown there, you did manage to make Gonzaga Preparatory earn it and work for it on that drive. And if it hadn't been for the penalty, you might have forced third and 10. Well, that's just it. And those are the kinds. That's how you grow up.

You know, you've got to be able to do. You know, you've got to be able to be in a position where you can get some stops. And from that standpoint, they were right there. And then they unfortunately stepped up and had a penalty and that was a no. No.

On the sidelines they were able to run it between the. I can't help but notice you didn't put me on any Mead games this year. Is that to keep away from favoritism, Paul? No, we. We need the Thursday Larry.

We've seen Cheney run the ball a little bit more. They've had some issues. They normally like to throw it, but you're having a tough time protecting your quarterback. So you're trying not to get him killed. And yet you got a couple of yards there, maybe a little play action.

Go against the grain, throw on second down or you know, come back. If you see the box with more defensive players in it, get that ball to the outside. Cause you're gonna have man coverage out there. He went up the middle, picked up a gain of three yards. So second down and seven here for Cheney as Valance goes out of the gun, Gets a good low snap, fakes it, throws it over the middle.

That was nice. Is that hauled in by Cheney's receiver? It is. What a catch by Josh bingham again at 15 yards and a Damon orthodontics first down. Yeah, nice job by Josh.

He went, he ran a slant on the right side there and got down just before the safety. Tried to take his head off. But good concentration. Pulled that football in and took a hit. He missed that play earlier.

Good bounce back. Well, and that's, I think that's good coaching too because they came back and they said, hey man, we've got a. He's open. We've got to make a play there. We've got to make them, you know, honor this thing.

And I think that's going to be there right now. Remember young secondary by Gonzaga Prep. So after the Bingham first down and a man, what a good play for Gina there. Up to their own 35 yard line. Here comes the snap.

Shortell hands it off along the outside to Cordell Lar a second time they've run that play and for the second time it's a loss of five. He's dragged down on the far side. Yeah, that was just good pursuit up there. And what, what prep does, it's so fundamentally sound. They have good leverage, they keep their corners on the outside, they force everything back inside.

They let their linebackers scrape, safeties fill the alley. Your DNS, you know, play good position defense they're fundamentally sound. You're gonna have to knock some people down on the ground. Coach Sweeney for WSU resigns after that game. Similar kind of deal, but hopefully the head coach doesn't resign. So anyway, just a hold there and just a great job stretching that team. That was going to be 65 yards. That would have been our play of the game right there.

That was an awesome effort. That was actually a 70 yard, maybe a 69 yard throw. Nice. Because they've got the ball now they got to move it back and that's just unfortunate. Two big penalties that.

Third down, third and ten gives them third and four, third and five now you wipe out a 69, 70 yard touchdown pass. That kills you. We were all in mid season form there. The Cheney offense, our broadcast, we were killing it there for a second, but it's called back on the penalty. It is still for the moment now, once again, 14 nothing Gonzaga Prep.

So G Prep has forced a fumble and G Prep catches the break there on defense. Genius. Kicking themselves on the. They're. They're really stubbing their own toe.

Second and thirty. Yeah. How many second and thirty plays do you have? Screen draw, maybe flare to the outside. That's about it.

Watch. Brutal. Yeah. So second down and what? 30 yards here.

Here comes the snap. Valance steps up, rolls out to the right pocket, collapsing looking downfield. He gets a gain of two or three yards and he's taken down at the 20. Well, that's what you do. You just rally, stay over the top, get your Receivers covered, keep everything in front.

If. And again, good pressure. They only rushed three that time, dropped eight. So there's not a lot of holes for your quarterback. And he only picked up four yards, so that's.

He'll take that play all day long. You got third, 26 now. Yeah. So third down and we'll be generous and call it a long 25 for the Cheney Blackhawks. 35 seconds here to go in the first quarter.

They're really taking their time there in the huddle. They'll probably just run it one more time here, Paul, and then take the end of the first quarter. Right. I agree. And get out of here.

And actually, it's too bad because this should be a 147 game right now. Really, you got a ball game if that penalty is doesn't wipe out that touchdown and you can actually make the case, it should be 7 to 7. Because G Prep shouldn't have scored that second touchdown if they hadn't turned it over. Here comes Valance, steps up, throws over the middle. Pass incomplete.

Interesting. They threw that ball. Clock will stop at 13 seconds to go. And it's fourth and a long way to go for Cheney. And they'll punt.

And remember, you had a punter that burped a punt on the last one. I think it went only about 12 yards and set up great field position for, you know, for Gonzaga Prep, who proceeded to drive right down the field and score. So you got to get the football off. You got to protect your punter. And you're starting to see hands on hips here at the end of the first quarter.

We talked about conditioning, Greg, early in the season. It's hot. You're not in football shape. These guys are going to get tired. Wait till the third quarter and fourth quarter.

Josh Bingham takes the long snap. He's back at the five yard line. That's not a deep kick. It doesn't even get to midfield. It bounces at the 45, takes a little bit of a G prep bounce.

It's at the 45 yard line. So only 45 to go for Gonzaga Prep. They start on the Cheney side of the field with what, three seconds to go in the first quarter? Oh, what the heck. Let's prolong it a little bit.

But you know, again, Cheney's right there. They've got to clean up a couple of little penalties. This is a ball game. They've got a chance. It should only be seven nothing or seven seven.

Yeah. Honestly, I mean, you know, you got the interception. Let's give him credit, you know, that was a nice pick there and just a bad punt, a bad bounce and now Prep's going to get the ball again on Cheney. Side of the 50 and that's a recipe for disaster if you're the Blackhawks. Unfortunately, JoJo Shortell out of the shotgun.

He's got Nick Binky with him in the backfield. Play action throws down the far side for Bo Howell. He gets behind the man. Oh, he beat the defenders straight up down the sideline. It's Howell the end of the first quarter.

Touchdown G Prep. It's 20 nothing at the end of the first 40. Was that 45, 44 yards, 45 yard touchdown pass and and just a great throw there by Shortell. He just dropped back and threw that ball to a spot and allowed Howe to go in and gather that. A couple of catches there and just a great job by the touchdown by Bohol from that throw by Mr.

Shortell. Man, we thought they were just going to run it to end the quarter here. That was a dagger in the heart. Give the offensive coaches credit for that and that'll end the the first quarter. And this is really a game we were talking about. Could easily be 7 nothing or maybe even 7 7. Cheney with a couple breaks going their way. I would say this game should be 77 right now. And it's 21 nothing just because Cheney keeps tripping over their own feet.

Touchdown pass of 70 yards, gets wiped out for a penalty. They throw an interception and two plays. They give up a score. They have a bad punt that bounces and goes the wrong direction. They fumble the ball, but they can't do anything.

They get a fumble back from prep and can't do anything with it. So kind of disappointing. All right, that ball is in the air. Rolls down to the 10 yard line. She is going to try to return it maybe Back to the 15 on the left side of the field.

So a long way to go for the Cheney Blackhawks. They're down 21 nothing to start the second quarter. But again, Paul, I mean, this should be a tie game. STCU is a member dome cooperative that been helping neighbors in the inner Northwest since 1934. That's a long time.

Handoff up the middle of Jeremiah Hubbard for Cheney. Short gain on the play. Nice job that time. Just a good run. Trying to get something positive here.

You've got a situation. You got one of their linemen coming up limping and that's one thing Prop doesn't or Cheney does want to have is some injuries out of this deal and, you know, lose a kid for a couple of games. And so they're going to have a subsequent there. And if I'm. If I'm H.

T. higgins, I know what he's going to do. He's going to move their best defensive lineman over and head it up right on the new guy coming in and see if he can block him. So a gain of two yards on the play. Second and an eight here for Cheney.

Man, they were one and nine last year, but this looks like a better team than we saw last time out, Paul. This is a better team. I think they're a lot more explosive. They've got some playmakers on the outside. They got a quarterback that could bring it.

Valens out of the gun. Hands off to Hubbard again. He's brought down from behind by a linebacker. Gain a ticket. This will bring up a manageable third and five.

That's okay. This is. That's what you want to keep, you know, getting. Take a couple of shots on the outside, run the football between the tackles, run some draws, run some screens, protect your quarterback. Give him a chance.

He's got a good arm. I like the way he sits in the pocket. He's the kind of guy that can sit back there. And if he has time, he's going to be very dangerous this season. I think this Cheney team is much improved from what we saw last year to this year, Greg, and they just had a tough matchup out of the shoots.

Playing prep 10:35 to go until halftime here at G Prep. And the bullpups leading cheney21 Nothing, but it should be a lot closer. This Blackhawks team looks better. Here comes Valance. He tries a QB sneak out of the gun up the middle.

Boy, he got pretty close there. Let's see what the referees say. I don't think prep was expecting it. He did get it. Gain a five.

That's a demon. Orthodontics, first down. This is a better Cheney team. I like this team, Paul. Yeah, I do, too.

And I think. I think that had a tough time last year. And, you know, some. Sometimes you start getting beat and it's tough to come out game after game. I played on some bad teams, you know, in high school and junior college, and you do your very best.

And also the next thing you know, you look up, it's 28 to nothing. It's like, are you kidding me? How do they score four touchdowns? Well, they put the ball in the end zone, Paul. That's, that's part of the deal here.

So that is how football works. Yep, that's how football works. And they reward you with six points. So unfortunately for us, we gave up a lot of those. First down and 10 for Cheney at their own first 30 yard line on the left side of the field.

They're driving left to right across your radio dial. Here it comes. Valance rolls out left, throws down the far sideline, threw it behind his receiver. Cordell Larr, hauled it in. The question was, was he in bounds or not?

I don't think he was. I think he was out of bounds. And they had a hold on the left tackle there. That good officiating there. They let that one go.

He just grabbed the prep defender and just threw him to the ground. So unfortunately, the quarterback for Cheney could have just run right around there. You know, on the outside he had running room. Probably would have had five, six, seven, maybe eight yards. But he decided to try to fit that ball in there.

I like it. He kept his eyes downfield, but he had another penalty from the headlinesman over here. And they're going to move that back. I think against Cheney, Cheney continues to trip over their own feet. Against G Prep early in this one, 9:44, the clock stopped to go here.

Before halftime, 21 nothing. G Prep actually, I think they declined the penalty. Did they? Yeah. So yeah, second and ten they did.

Yep. So that would have wiped out the run, you know, by Cheney anyway. So that, that's just unfortunate. Clean up those penalties. Don't turn the ball over.

Good things happen. Jacob Valance has gotten better at decision making since we saw him last season. His coach told us that's true on the phone this week and it looks true again here. He throws down the middle off the hands of his receiver downfield of the 35 yard line line. He was going for Cordell Lar.

He was behind two bullpups, but it was just a little overthrown. Yeah. That time ryan Jackson, number 20, he's. He's a junior over there. He actually had a great angle on the ball, but he underran the route.

Yeah. So the ball was over his hands. That hit the wide receiver in the hands. But he had a guy flash in front of him and I think distracted him a little bit, hence he couldn't pull it. They keep trying to get it to number 12, Cordell Lar.

He is their best slot receiver. They say he's player. They say he's the best open guy in the field. Yeah, I would Agree with that. So we'll see if they try it again here.

On third down and 10, back of their own 30 yard line on the left side of the field, Valance, the QB, he's a tall guy. 64195. Three receivers split to his right, one to his left. It's a handoff to Hubbard. He swings left.

Short gain on the play. Prep was ready for it. Fourth down. Yeah, just a good job that time. Defensively a nice job with a right tackle in the DN to kind of squeeze, squeeze that play.

Inside linebacker slid right over the top and he kind of overran the play. Forced everything back inside though. And there were guys here cleaning up. I understand why they ran and they wanted to catch G Prep off guard, but I think you got to throw that ball down 21. Yeah, you got to be smart too, because that's traditionally a time where they like to blitz and disguise stuff and, and all of sudden they start rushing three and dropping eight.

There's not a lot of windows out there. All right, here is number five. Bingham back to punt. Oh no, it's over his head. Down to the five yard line.

Who's going, gonna fall on it? Bingham fell on it. The punter got it. But it's down at their own four yard line. Prep's gonna go four yards here and presumably punch it in pretty fast.

Well, now you've had an interception return that set up an 18 yard touchdown drive. You've got another fumble. From that standpoint, you had a touchdown of 70 yards that get wiped out from holding penalty. Now you've got a bad snap and a punt. Those are three brutal plays that will set up basically wiping out a touchdown for your side, giving two touchdowns for Prep and he can't.

That's what kills, you know, teams when they come in here and have to play Gonzaga Prep. All right, so we're at 21 nothing. G Prep. And they take over now in the Cheney 4. Shortell out of the gun, turns it, hands it off to Noah Holman.

He goes up the middle, dives forward. He's right there. He didn't get it. Second down in inches from the goal line. Two touchdowns already on the ground.

The 45 yard touchdown pass right the end of the first quarter. And that's the kind of play that gives your quarterback confidence. He says, okay, I can throw the deep ball. And now start making better reads on your, on your option rushes and let's see what happens. Second and goal.

Shortell fakes a handoff. He tried to pull it himself, but he's dragged down for a loss by the Cheney defense. They drove him all the way back to the 20 yard line. So I don't think they're going to move him back there, but just a great job that time and probably lost about five, six yards. I think they were down on the one or two yard line.

They're back to the seven on that play. That would be a no, no. The offensive coordinator for prep is going to chew some tookhouse on that particular play. Poorly blocked. The wing guy came in and blew the play up because he ran into the fullback and wiped everything out.

So that was just a. That was, that was messed up from the get go. Yeah, it's goal to go. Third and down. Third and goal from the seven.

Let's see what Shortell does. It's a sweet play. Off to the left, it's Nick Banky. Can he get the edge? Down to the five, down to the four.

The three dives for the goal post. Stepped on about the three, I think. Yeah. Didn't get it out of bounds around the two. So this will be fourth and goal from the two.

What do you do, Paul? Go. Yeah, you go for it. I, you know, Coach McKenna is the kind of guy saying, okay, look it, you screwed up that second down play. You guys need to come back.

We're going to punch this thing in. They're going to run the football off the left side, see if they can punch it in. 4th and goal from the 2. Shortell out of the gun from the 1 because Teeny jumped offside. Good count by prep that time.

Good job by Shortell. He got up there and he gave him a hard count. They wanted to jump into the gaps and they did, but they forgot that you got to read the ball. And you can hear the G Prep student section there on the far side of the field ready to go up. Four touchdowns.

Fourth and goal from the one short. Tail out of the gun. He's got Holman in the backfield. Hands off the Holman. He dives forward.

Prep says they have it. No, they said he's down. They said he's down. I thought he got in. I didn't think he went down to the ground.

But I think, you know, the official came over and you know, from that standpoint then that was. That was a great defensive stand by Cheney. Well done. Yeah. G Prep does not score.

And you rejoin us after Cheney just made a goal line stand on defense and stopped G prep four times in a row. That's like a turnover in my opinion. You get the ball back. I'd consider that a turnover. They've had a fumble.

They forced. They get a fourth down stop that saves them from from punching that ball in there. They had a big plan second down that pushed it back, you know, six yards. So give Cheney's defensive credit. They're making some plays.

It's just they keep shooting themselves in the foot with those offside penalties. A holding penalty that wiped out a 70 yard touchdown. This is a good football team. They are competing here. They're just not getting some results that they need.

So Cheney is down there on the left side of the field at their own one yard line down three touchdowns. They've got 99 yards to go. What will Jacob Valance do? Turns and hands off. Jeremiah Hubbard met in the end zone.

G Prep got to him. Safety 23 nothing prep. That time they shot the linebacker right through the gap. Great job that time by by Gonzaga Prep. They, they get two points there.

So now it's 23 nothing. Well done defense. They scored. So they got points out of it after all. Just not seven.

Out of nowhere, touchdown saving tackle that time. I think that was, I'm trying to think of, I think it was 34 that came through there. But he saved a touchdown, was able to get, you know, able to get there had he not made that shoestring tackle. Prep scored again. So for the second consecutive drive, G Prep takes over in Cheney territory.

Actually, Paul, the third consecutive drive. I take that back. Look at you with your new math. Thank God you're an English teacher? Yeah.

I'm not sure I could do math in my own high school here at Mead. All right, here comes G Prep. They run a sweep off to the the right side. No gain on the play. That was Holman.

Yeah, that's the thing that Holman, that's what made McKenna so good, is he was able to find those holes. His reads were so good because he did it for three years. And you get really good at it when you're, you know, basically 85 to 90% of the offense runs through you. So, you know, from that standpoint this is just a situation where, you know, where Prep's quarterback's going to get better as the game goes on, the season goes on and he gets more reps against, against, you know, live action.

Gain a one for G Prep. Second and nine from the Cheney 47. Here comes the snap to short tail. He'll pitch the option along the outside. It's Sam Ohman up the sideline.

He goes past the corner, past the safety, down to the 25 for a Damon Orthodontics. First down. Nice. Nice job by Oman that time. Really good read though.

I like what Shortell did. He waited for the last minute, the DN came down, took him out. He pitched it right before he got hit. That was a perfect read and an excellent pitch. Going to the right side.

This time it's McKayle and again in fact, and my mistake, that's Noah Holman, the sophomore, gain of about 4 yards. They're using the new sophomore a lot, Paul. Right, and I think they found a weapon there. You know, a couple guys graduated lose their quarterback. 630 to go here in the game and it's all Prep right now, 23 or nothing.

And they're rolling again. Second down. Coach McKenna says he's got a lot of potential and they keep using him. And they come to the option again. This time it's Banky along the outside.

He's got one man to beat. The ten. The five. Touchdown. It's G Prep again.

It's the 612 twenties. Senior Nick Banky off the option. He had a couple touchdowns last year. He does it again here with 6, 15 to go in the first half. Nice run that time.

16 yard touchdown by Banky, but an excellent pitch. Give credit that time to Shortell because he waited till the last minute. The DN came in, took him out, but he pitched the ball. Banke caught it in stride, was able to find a seam. Good block on the outside.

The corner got blown up. Safety couldn't get over there and that was just speed getting to the end zone. Nice job by Banky. Here comes the PAT from G Prep. The swing of the foot up and good 30 to nothing.

We'll call it three receivers split up to the left for Jacob Valance on the Cheney offense, which has looked pretty good here up the middle, they go to Hubbard.

Maybe a gain of a yard on the play. Not a lot. Well, then what happens? You try to get conservative. You don't want to make a mistake because you're down 30.

You know, you're worried about, worry about that. You've got to let the offense be able to roll. You've got to get your quarterback in a rhythm. And this is where the offensive line, this is where guys get better. Plus the poor QB for Cheney's got to run over the sidelines to get the play every time.

And that's the nice thing about the NFL and even college is starting to do it where you've got, you know, you can, you can hear the plays in the headset so you don't have to, you know, expend that energy. That's probably a 25, 30 yard run every single play. You're gonna get tired. Go after the cross country team in the spring. You're gonna be in good shape.

Knight is falling here at Gonzaga Prep. Sky is getting darker back on the field though. Second down and nine yards to go here for Cheney. Jacob Allen takes a low snap, throws over to the near side. He's got Cordell Lar, their best receiver in space.

He turns up field gain a nine. Punched out of bounds at the 39. That was a good throw and a great job by, by the receiver because he saw that he was in trouble. He's not a real big guy, maybe a buck fifty, but he's got great speed. Cordell Lar, they love him.

Five seven, one, five, five. Maybe that's what the roster says. Maybe my left leg weighs more than him. I mean, he's probably 135, but it doesn't matter because I don't care if you're, you're £35. If you can run like that, you're going to be good.

Just don't get hit by the big guy in the field. Don't let somebody land on you. They kept trying to get it to him in the first half. I'm glad they finally did. Yep.

And they need to keep doing that. That play has been there all night long and I like the OC for, for Cheney. They're doing a good job of finding some space and putting your Playmakers in it. Third and a long one here for Cheney. Valens puts his hands on his head, waits for the snap, gets it at his belt, runs up the middle, tries a QB sneak.

Boy, that came really close. It looks like he got to the 39. That's going to be right up against the line of scrimmage. That's a right foot, left foot spot and I think it's going to be really close. He might have to measure on this thing and I think they are so.

We're going to, you know, we're going to go out and impose our will here. Get a really good Gonzaga prep defense.

And they did. That's a, that's an encouragement builder that gets your momentum going. Now they got to stick the football in the end zone without having a penalty. I'll tell you, even though this game might end up being 56 nothing or whatever by the end, I think Cheney. There's some stuff that I like here, Paul.

Well, they're better. They're better, but they're playing Gonzaga Prep, who's the number seven team in the state. You know, that's, that's kind of tough. I mean, how about easing into it a little, little bit instead of whenever they got the three running back thing going there. I like that.

Yeah, they got dime backfield again. It's Hubbard, Jeremiah Hubbard, and not his brother Alex. He's spun down around the line of scrimmage. A tsunami of Gonzaga prep bullpups there. Five players hit him.

They knew where that was going to go. When you have three backs in there, you can bring your linebackers up, bring your safeties up. You're gonna play. Probably play man on the outside. You can really stack the box.

I like it when they spread this team out. Spread these guys out, get some one on one matchups here out of the backfield and, and see what happens. You, you might, you might be able to break a tackle and make a big play like we saw earlier in the game on that long touchdown pass. All right, so second down and 10, no gain on the play. 3:10 to go here before the end of the first half.

G Prep on top of Cheney 30 to nothing. And listen to those bullpup students. But the student sections packed over there. It's great to see. It's totally full.

You love to see it. Here comes Cheney on offense. Valance rolls left, looks downfield, trying to find someone in space. And it's hauled in at the 30 yard line downfield. What a catch by Camden Collins.

Actually, I think that's closer to the 27th. Just a great job that time. Kind of a naked bootleg. It looked like prep had defended it well, but he was able to get around the outside where the DN was corner. Couldn't get up there in time.

He had a little post corner route by the wide receiver over there. And corner was too, too shallow safely. He didn't get over there far enough. Beautiful throw by Cheney that time in that post corner route to the left side. Referring to call that the 28 yard line.

So here come the Blackhawks. That is the second time they've successfully gone downfield tonight. And remember the area we talked about the most least experienced for Gonzaga Prep. Three juniors, two sophomores with those five defensive backs in the Gonzaga prep secondary. Three backs in an eye formation here for Cheney to go to Hubbard.

Left side loss of two, the linebackers all over. I don't like that. I don't like that diamond formation. I like it when they spread. I like the play action.

I know they're trying to set play action, but Gonzaga Prep's too good up front. It's interesting. That wasn't diamond. That was the third time in a row they've run that deep. The eye formation.

It's not working. No, it's not. Keep spreading them out. I mean, you know, you're just telling Prep, hey, we're gonna run the ball. Why don't you pack everybody inside and their dudes are right now a little bit better in chini stints.

Beautiful harvest moon on top of the right side of the fields. End zone here. We got a half moon and it's man, red, orange. That is just beautiful underneath though, on the field. Down to the 29 yard line.

Loss of two for Cheney. They run the deep formation again. It's a pitch. This time it's Hubbard. He's got a nice gain up to the 25 yard line, down to the 24.

Prep had a guy in the backfield, just missed the tackle. Great job by Hubbard to make him miss the tackle that time. And he just slid right up there on the right side. And good, good linebacker play that time by Gonzaga Prep to finally come over and make it at third. Manageable.

Remember the last time this happened was on defense. It was third long right down about this area. And the Cheney defense jumped offside. And then guess what? Next play they come back at school.

So let's see if Cheney can. I'd love to see them punch a ball here. Got 135 to go here in the second quarter. Get a touchdown here. Get your team a little bit fired up going into halftime.

Cheney down 30, nothing from Gonzaga preps 23 on the right side of the field. White jerseys, black helmets, red pants, looking like their big brother. Eastern Washington Eagles play action. Valens down the right side going for Bingham off his hands, overshot his receiver down at the 5. Pretty good coverage over there on the outside.

I think that was Grimsby. The 5 11, 170 pound sophomore had a. He did a good job. They ran a little kind of a skinny corner route with where he ran inside it. Quick, quick slant and broke back outside.

But he didn't bite on the. The inside move. Stayed on his shoulder and made that a really tough throw. He had to lay that in over the top of the corner. Couldn't do it.

All right, it's fourth and five. They're going to send Valance back out, but he gets down on a knee and they're going to have him hold. The Sheen is going to kick a field goal here and just try their best to get on the board by the end of the first half. Well, they're bringing, they had, you know, defender and off offensive player that came in late. Let's see if they get a block.

You got to be careful on that 36 yard kick for Josh Bingham. Kick is up. It's got the accuracy. No, it curved off to the left to the very last minute. No good.

That's okay. They gave themselves a chance. Really. They got one touchdown, that gets called back. Chance for a field goal here.

Here comes G Prep again. This time it's Holman. He's taken down around the 28 yard line. That'll bring up third and three inside a minute. You're at 50 seconds.

Clocks rolling here. I think Gonzaga Prep has to feel pretty good. Made it. Made a mistake on a fumble. Gave up a big touchdown that got called back.

They have to feel pretty lucky. They're up 30 to nothing for some reason. We've got a clock stoppage here on 3rd and Shortbridge. I can't think of why that would be, but they stopped it at 47 seconds here as the Prep offense marches up to the line of scrimmage. Might have been a mistake.

You've got. You've got a guy that just fell down on the sidelines. I think he's cramping again. We talked about conditioning. It's hot out.

It's hot. And so you've got. You got a few. You got the headlinesman over there trying to help the young man out, and he's eight feet from there. It's not even that.

He's like a half a foot from the sidelines. You know, our coach used to say, just roll over here, go get some water. Oh, thanks, Coach. I can't. My legs are cramping.

Helpful. Yeah, that. Seriously. How about you bring me the water, dude? Because I.

I can't even feel my toes right now. Did you call her a coach, dude? No. Heck no. You're too respectful.

Paul, he would make us run. Oh, I called him some things. He just didn't hear what I was calling. Sure. The Sword and Sin Way.

40 across midfield. 50, 45. What a run for G Prep. Sheesh. Big demon.

Orthodontics. First down and still 38 seconds left. Big hit on the sidelines over there. Nice job, but what an excellent job. A blocking on that time.

They brought the guy in motion. Had. Had. Had one of the guards pull around the outside, seal the end over there. Great block by the wide receivers.

I've been pressed by Gonzaga Prep's wide receivers. Blocking downfield. They've been excellent. All right, 45 yard line is where they take over from Shortell. Launches it downfield.

He's got his man behind the defense, Bo Howell, down to the goal line. Did he get there? Nope. No, I think that's like a 45 yard pass to Boho. How about that, huh?

Phenomenal. But. But it didn't look like you got in the end zone. No. 90 yards on two catches and they've got down to the 124 seconds, so, you know, pretty good.

Another great throw that time. And again what happens, you've got play action, pass. Because basically they've been able to run the ball. They ran the same exact play where you had the big run down the side sidelines. They came back, showed the exact same look.

He pulled the ball. And that's what happens. Your corners, you know, basically get into position when they get bad eyes. You start peeking in the backfield, receiver runs right by you. That's exactly what happened.

That was Holman. His first of the year. Good for him. And that's what happened. Then it starts getting away with you and basically you're going to have, you're going to be in a situation where you know, you've got that, that 40 point rule, you know, where you're going to start seeing the clock run and you know, and again I think that, I think that's a good thing.

You know, you don't want to rub a guy's nose in it. And it's disappointing because people are going to look at the score, you know, the score tomorrow and say, wow, prep really rolled. But this game was a lot better and a lot closer than what the scores. And Pat for Matthew Herzog is up and it is good. Man.

Gonzaga Prep is rolling. 37 nothing. Yeah, big drive that time. Great job of getting downfield, but it was the big play. It was the, the guys down the field.

And Bo Howells had two catches. One for a touchdown and one nearly for a touchdown. He's got 85, you know, I'm sorry, he's got 90 yards on two catches. Yep. And a nice job by chance.

JoJo Shortell, the 5 10, 160 pound senior who's been the longtime backup. He really is throwing the ball very well on the deep routes. And I like that the coaches are calling that. And they come back, they set it up with a run, it's exact same look. Then they come back with a pass.

Yeah, I would say Paul Shortell a little bit of an issue so far on pole versus pitch, but throwing is great. Yeah. But you know what, the whole thing is the pole versus pitch just takes time. And you're not gonna, you're not gonna have that same kind of look in practice because they're not gonna let you hit the quarterback. Okay.

So he just needs to do it live bullets. He needs to do it against other teams. He's gonna get a lot better as the season goes on, which means Gonzaga Prep's gonna get a lot better. But I like the way this kid can throw. He's got an arm.

I believe that that's a short little line drive kick from G Prep. They only want to let it get down to the 30 yard line and that's where Cheney falls on it here. 20 seconds left here in the quarter quarter. And you know, Cheney, they could go down with their, you know, with their, their Daubers down here, but they played well, they've represented well. They just made too many mistakes.

He runs past the 20 yard line, line up for the 25 30. Boy, oh boy, he should have been tackled for a sack. And ends up getting about six yards out of it. And I think that'll be it for the quarter. Then one for Bo Howell, one for Nick Banky, one for Noah Holman and a safety, Paul, that got us to 37. Yeah, the safety was, was set up by a great defensive stand by Cheney. They had four downs, you know, did an excellent job on, on second down, forcing about a five, six yard loss. And then prep just couldn't punch it in. But then they had the ball in the one and just a great job on the right side.

The big DN, I think came through and blew up the quarterback in the end zone or the running back and really had no chance on that. Man, oh man. So let's take this time to talk about the Cheney team here, Paul, because like we said, a bunch of turnovers really screwed them off early. However, I got to tell you, we said a lot in the first quarter. This should be a tie game.

I think this Cheney team could make a push. Well, they just, they've got to do a better job of protecting the quarterback and not turning the ball over. And the other thing that was a bugaboo, the thing that's early in the season is your discipline from a standpoint of, you know, of penalties and you wiped out a play that would have brought you back, would have made it 14 to 7, you know, and you have to remember there was a gift from a standpoint of, you know, that interception that set up the two play, 18 yard drive, the first touchdown run.

And then again from a standpoint of a bad punt that went backwards, gave him short field again only 45 yards. Did that in two plays, actually 49 yards, a four yard run, then the 45 yard touchdown pass. So a couple of things took shape, you know, and just, just made it tough for Cheney. But, but Cheney is, is doing what they need to do and they'll, they'll figure some things out in the second half and you got to come on, compete a little bit. They only won one game last year.

You can go to Prep, you can go to Central Valley. We'll have a game or two out there this year. You'll be able to go to downtown, the Spokane, you know, public schools facility. It's beautiful, too, by the way. It's just a big pile of rocks now that they're.

They're trying to make into little ones. But that's. They're. They're not going to have to worry about that thing moving, by the way, because it is really, it's. It's built pretty strong.

It's built for tough, I guess is the way to describe that. So anyway, that'll be fun. All right. So at the moment here on our halftime Show, Gonzaga Prep 37, Cheney Nothing here in Week 1 1, although the Blackhawks have looked pretty good. Let's take a look at some of the other Washington and Idaho halftime scores with our area teams.

Let's see what we have right now. Like we already said, second quarter, Lakeside leading Pullman 44 nothing. That one hurts. That's an ouch. Central Valley only up six on Ridgeline.

Paul, that's a little surprising. Six nothing. Six nothing. Well, I think CV and I think you're seeing Ridgeline, they finally have a senior class. They took a beating last year, but CB's down a little bit, which surprises me.

But Ridgeline starting to come up. That's, you know, that's where a lot of those CB kids came from. And now they're all going to Ridgeline. So let's give Ridgeline some credit. Yeah, nice job.

That's a heck of a battle right now against Central Valley. Well, Liberty Lake is an area with resources. I bet that's going to be a good team in a couple years. They're going to be the new, improved Central Valley, I think. I think they're going to be a big power out there.

But U High and CBO have something to say about that. Other halftime scores we can find at the moment. West Valley leading Freeman 13 7. I guess that's not a surprise. Now, Freeman's usually pretty good and they'll, they'll compete a little bit.

West Valley, you know, is a, is a good team as well, so I think that's a pretty even battle there. And that should be a fun game. And I'll tell you what's a pretty good game at the moment here. We were looking forward to this game over at Mead High School all week. Eastmont's a good team.

Mead at Eastmont over near Yakima right now. Panthers up on the Cats seven nothing. That's a good close game between two good teams. Meads up seven nothing. Yeah, yeah, I remember we went there when I was coaching at Lewis and Clark.

We had 250 yards and penalties because they kept calling our defensive backs for jamming because the, the, the fine officials from that Wenatchee area were using the NFL rule that you couldn't touch anybody within five yards. I go, that's not the high school rule. I got banisheed up to the, the press box in that game because I was not very happy. Taking a look at some Idaho scores before we say goodbye on the commercial break, seeing if we can find any for our local schools. A Coeur d' Alene 13, Sandpoint 8 in the second quarter.

That's a good game. That is a good game. Sandpoint's tough. They got a great. One of my favorite stadiums up there right in the water.

I love that stadium. Such a great place. Great to play baseball up there in the old man days. That's a good one. And they fixed it up and it's really a beautiful setup.

I love that, that ballpark. And getting towards halftime, Post Falls on top of timberline 27 nothing. Yeah, post Falls is good. I mean, Post Falls, Lake City, Coeur d' Alene Lane, Lakeside, Lakeland out there. They're doing a nice job as well.

There's some good football over North Idaho again. And there were some parents from Puyallup, and they had this catcher who was trying to go. They had already had two guys picked off. They had a guy thrown out of second. So they've had three calls go against them. So their catcher, on a pass ball from first, goes all the way to second, keeps going.

He doesn't even slide at third base. So I'm the infield official. So he walks in there, the guy tacks him on the chest. He's out. So I call him out, and all of a sudden, this parrot starts yelling at me from the.

From the top of the. You know, the Gonzaga thing. And he goes, I can't believe we're getting hometown. That's four calls. It's gonna get all of them.

We're out. It was easy. So I'm thinking. So I yell back. I go, is that how you win in Puyallup?

You got a hometown, people? Coach starts laughing. He goes, that guy's an idiot. Don't worry about him. And he yells back, and he goes, he was out.

It was great. So I yell back at him. That's kind of how it works, you know, I love that. And I wish more referees would do that. No, don't do that.

That's a bad thing to do. Never mind. But I'm old enough now. I don't care. I'm on the far side.

I'm getting ready to retire. You're not old. You're an institution, Paul. Yeah, institutionalized, maybe would be more. More important stuff.

But coming out second half now Cheney's got to do a couple things. They can't make penalties. They can't turn the football over. And they've got to come out with some energy. Now.

You're down 37, nothing. If they give up another score, you're going to have a running clock. So this is really going to be a chance for this Cheney team to get better. This game's. Out of the way.

You worry about what happens next week. How do you get better for next week? You improve in the second half and that's what I want to see with this coaching staff if they can get this team to come out and play hard in the second half. I'm Greg Talbot. That is the legendary Paul Sorensen here for week one. It is Cheney. It is Gonzaga Prep. And the bullpups up 37 nothing.

Although Cheney looks a lot better. It's interesting, Paul. I was looking at our spotting boards, which is how we broadcast our games so we have our information. I was looking at last year's spotting board for Machini. They.

They look better even though they did lose some guys. This is not exactly the same team as it was last year. They had a lot of offensive linemen, you know, that are back their quarterback. I think that last year was really good for him. He got better from experience standpoint because he took a beating.

He got thumped. He did, you know, and I can relate to that. Our teams in high school, you know, we played in a 5A high school league, you know, in California. Our high school was 3,500 students and we were the smallest high school in our league. We had two schools that had over 7,000 students.

Now think about that. So you're going to run into some pretty good football players. And we got better our junior year. We were awful. Senior year we went three, four, we lost three games because of a teacher strike.

You guys needed more money. So the first month of September. I didn't start teaching until this year. I don't think you get to blame me for teaching. We were throwing potatoes and tomatoes at the teachers that were out there because we wanted to play and they, they wanted more money and they got more money and then we got to come back and we lost three games.

So. So it was fine. But. But it was a great experience and it helped us get better. That's what Cheney is doing.

They experienced that tough junior year that we had and now they're going to come back and you're going to see more wins out of this genie football team. This is not a bad football team. They've got some skills. You know who I like? You only got a couple of touches is Cordell lard.

That little 5 foot 7 wide receiver. I love him. He's so fast. I would try to figure out a way to scheme him. I put him in motion, put him in the backfield, put him in fly sweeps, bubble screens.

You know, things where you can get one on one and get him in space, run him down the seam, run him down the sidelines, you know, throw some fade routes to him. You know, you can do some game planning utilizing his speed. And then what happens? You have a defense that will roll protection to his side, which will open up the backside and that, that might get you some big plays there as well. You know who I'm surprised we did not hear from in the first half was Curran Moore, this 6 foot 6, 210 pound wide receiver.

He was their crazy tall, go up and get it guy last year. I'm not sure we've seen him targeted once. Well, I think he's had to stand and block. He's been, he's been spending some time in protection. I haven't seen him in a lot of routes, to be honest.

And I think they're trying to figure out a way to protect the quarterback because perhaps putting good pressure on them. They sure are. And they're not blitzing that much. All right, the prep team is out there in their navy jerseys, white helmets, white pants, doing their stretches. The Cheney team is on the near side of the field there.

They're standing on the sideline just waiting. They're like, all right, let's see if we can make something happen in the second half. Yeah, I agree. Well, and they got two minutes to go here, so you get a chance to kind of do their thing. But you know, you go in at halftime, you try to have fun.

You get some, you know, some juice, some oranges, you try to do some things to rehydrate and you come back out, compete, you know. Paul Sorensen. We're just getting started with our weekend of football here on 700 ESPN 105. 3 FM. What's coming up tomorrow in Cheney?

Yeah, we got Eastern taking on Tennessee State and the Fighting. Eddie Georges, he's the head coach. It's a historical black college. It's all only the third time that Eastern has played a team. Like actually fourth time, they're two and one on the season.

One was in the playoffs and then they had two non conference. One of the teams was a Division 2 team that was opting up that Eastern played I think a year or two ago. Ledger Wood or you know, one of those teams, I don't remember the name, but this will be interesting. They've got transfers from Ohio State from Rutgers. They want to come play Freddie George.

They want to come play for Eddie George. And you remember him from the Ohio State dates. Great running back, had an outstanding career with the Tennessee Titans. He's got a lot of guys with NFL experience on his coaching staff. Two new coordinators, both offense and defense.

Larry Ware and I'll bring you the game. Pregame starts about. I think it's, I think we're an hour and a half or maybe it's an hour. I don't remember. I think we started 11 and no, 12.

Yeah. Noon is our pregame. Thank you. Steve Pry, who keeps us honest and he always has a finger on a button making sure that I say the appropriate things and when I don't, you don't hear me. So it's good to have his, his skills back in the studio because he's really good and.

And then of course, game time will be one o' clock going out to Cheney. If you don't anything going on. Cougs take on Idaho at 6:30 down in Pullman. That'll be interesting. I think the Vandals are going to be much improved.

They have a couple of transfers. Kid from Notre Dame is playing DN linebacker from usc, both of grad transfers. They got a guy out of New Mexico State. That's, that's a corner that's really good. They got a couple of JC linemen.

They got a punter out of junior college. So I think, I think it's going to be a game where I think they're going to have some issues up front. But Washington State better not screw around because I think Idaho is going to be much improved. Personally, I think they're going to be the most improved team in the Big sky this year. Really?

Yeah, I do. I like Koch Ek. I think he's done a great job. He was on that staff with Nick Holt back in the day, then left and ended up going to South Dakota State. They brought their quarterback and their offensive coordinator back, along with Coach Jack.

They're going to have some discipline and they're going to be physical. So the first full week in the football, man, it's here. It's here, man. Here. Where did August go?

I mean, seriously flew. Where did August. Where did July go? This summer was fast. Oh, my goodness.

You know, and I'll say this too, the weather's nice. I mean, it was a little hazy. Not a lot of fire season this year. No, thank goodness. Because the last five, six years roll into September.

It's awful. Well, guess what? It's Papa Murphy's changed the way he pizza. It's that time you got another kickoff. Cheney's gonna have to kick off.

Prep's gonna receive the football. Let's see if prep, they always want to, you know, have that first drive, try to take that football down the field and put some points on the board and really set the tone for the second half. All right, the second half kickoff is brought to you by Papa Murphy's change the way you pizza. And back to do the kicking on the left side of the 50 is Josh Bingham, back to receive for G Prep. On the right side of the the field is Bo Howell and Sam Omen.

The kick is in the air. It's a pretty good one. Down to about the 25 yard line. The question is, did it go out of bound or bounce? It just went into the the end zone.

And once you touch the end zone, they bring the ball out to the 20. It's a safety issue, which I think is good. And I will say this too. You're seeing a lot more, you're seeing a lot better tackling a lot of the rugby tackles. You're seeing a lot of these football teams wearing those extra like puffy little things on their helmet kind of to protect the head.

So I like the direction that basically high school football, college football and even the pros are going. They're trying to limit the collisions and you know, take, take care of these guys, these athletes. All right, here comes G Prep from their own 20 yard line on the right side of the field. Jojo Shortell drops back, rolls out to the left. Looks like he's going to pass on the first play of the half.

No, he tucks, he runs. He's still on his feet. He dodges a man past the 30. That's a first down to the 35, maybe to the 40. Boy, what a demon.

Orthodontics. First down, at least a gain of 15 for JoJo Shortell. Yeah, nice job that time and just an excellent job. Kind of a head fake. Look like he was going to look like he was going to make a play.

And then I think it was Siebert that came over 64 that finally landed on him and it knocked him down. But just a great head and shoulder fake. Get around that end and pick up some positive yards. He got to the 37 yard line and again a 17 on the QB sneak. Hand off up the middle on the option.

Lilo Michele picks up three on the dive. That was a good job that time by the read by him because that Was the right play he had there. Just a nice tackle on the inside, you know, by that same young man that just made the tackle in last place. So two straight for 64. Well done.

Gain of four. Second down and six for G prep. Sam Ohman goes in motion and instead on the option it'll be kept by shore tallies. But past midfield and down to the man, the Cheney almost 40 yard line. Another great run.

He's a little quick. He's got some quicks in there and that's really kind of the first time we've seen him make that fake. You can see him starting to get confident, Greg, in terms of his ability to make reads and then to start to pitch the ball and keep that ball. Plant that right foot, get upfield like he just did. Get that first down.

I was going to say Paul, not a big surprise but he looks a lot better compared to the first half here as he rolls out down the right sideline, looking deep down, throws on the out route off the hands of Bo Howell. Just threw too tall. Yeah, Dave, Dave McKinnon is going to talk to him and say look, you have that much open space in front of you, get 10 yards, get out of bounds because what happens, he rolled right. He had a receiver about 15, 18 yards down and air mailed him because he didn't plant that back foot. There was nobody in front of him.

Run. You got positive yards. Take it. And he was wide open to Howell. And more importantly, no one was chasing Shortell.

He could have run that ball. That's what I'm saying. And that's where, that's where he's going to learn. Second and ten. They run the option handoff up the middle of Michaela.

Spun down for a gain of about six. He's good. I like the weapon that he brings and he runs hard. And that's the one thing they do. And let's give this offensive line for prep credit.

They're opening holes, they're sustaining their blocks. This is a senior dominated football team and they're going to get better and better as the year goes on. Gain of six on the play. Second down here as they go up the middle again to Michaela. He's on his feet past the 25 yard line for a Damon Orthodontics first down.

Remember we talked about the. The A gap? Yep. Guess what? That play was a gap.

Yep. And if you can't stop that, then this entire offense has all of their weapons there because now they go a gap to quarterback, to pitch, to pass. You're in trouble. Cheney looks tired. They're down 37 nothing on the first drive of the second half for G Prep.

One more touchdown here for the bullpups would put us into running clock as it shortell looking play action, rolls right downfield, looking downfield, spins a man off and is clocked at the 20 yard line. And the clock will keep running there. And that was. He got ear holed on that one. But that's where you got to be smart, you know, and make sure your quarterback doesn't get hurt.

I think he's down still. Yeah, he's coming out because his helmet came off. Yep. He got spun down and popped. Got spun down, thrown into the bleachers.

He'll come over and he'll say, son, get out of bounds. And you see the guys with the white shirts, he's coming over to Pumlia. Get out of bounds. I need you the entire season, not just like the third quarter. So the question is, who is the official backup QB this season for Gonzaga Prep?

It is number 18 in there. They don't have an 18 on the roster, so I guess we'll find out a little bit later. Probably the JV quarterback. Handoff up the middle to Leela McKel. McKelly, he's down inside the five.

So Damon, orthodontics, first down. It'll be goal to go. Yeah, let me see if I can find out who that guy is here. You know what I miss, right? It's number 12.

It's Ryan. It's Tough Ryan. Tough Ryan is his name. Wow. He should be a field turf.

His first name's Tough Tuff. Right now. You know, he's gonna be. He's a sophomore, so he's our jbqb, I'll guarantee you. Okay, that makes sense.

And again, this is not an indictment on Cheney. Prep is good. There are four A team. You've got Cheney that's moved up from the two A to the three A level. They're rebuilding their program.

They're getting better. I like what I see. Yeah. Gonzaga Prep preseason ranked number seven in the highest classification in the state. Can't blame him.

Nope. And again, everybody's gonna go. Cheney's not very Good. Cheney's much better. Cheney is a lot improved than what we, we saw last year.

That's exactly right. All right, so for their first drive of the second half, here's Jacob Valance with three backs in the backfield, hands it off to Jeremiah Hubbard, who gets lifted off the ground in WWE wrestler slammed for a loss. Oh, man, those G Prep linebackers, no joke. Well, they, they see the fill there and that was just an excellent read. I think that was 37.

That was a Jackson Crocker six one, 190 pound. He's also captain and he's going to get a turf burn because he hit the ground so hard after a perfect form tackle. Put the shoulder right in the chest, head off to the side, pick the legs up and buried him. That's if you want to. You see what tackle is, Go to Wikipedia, you'll see that play.

That's a Big Sky Conference future player tackle. Heck yeah. Darn right. That's. I got to get a hold of coach.

Basket going. Hey, there's a dude out of Prep's pretty good. Yeah. Second down and 11 after the loss of one. Here comes Cheney on the play.

Action fake. It's not going to Hubbard. It's going to be Valance rolling out to the left, looks downfield. He just eats it. No one to throw to.

Well, again, when you have a one receiver route out there, basically eliminates everything because you roll there and it cuts the field in thirds and it makes it much easier to defend. When you drop back and you've got the entire field, you can scan, you've got a better chance there. But they basically cut that field in half of the rollout. Then he got closer to the sideline in the hash. You're down to a third, easy to defend.

Good defense that time by prep. And he did run out of bounds. But with the 44 point lead for Gonzaga Prep, we've got a running clock. Yeah, and that's what's going to happen. And that's part of the deal.

And it's a good thing. I like that rule on multiple fronts. All right, so Valance back out under center this time. No, instead he'll go back to the shotgun. He's got two receivers split to his left and two to his right here for the long third down and eight.

They're down 44 points. Here comes the blitz. Gets a low snap at his knees, steps up, no one's open. He's just going to run it up the middle past the 30 yard line on the left. Tash.

He Is clocked. Good run. Did not pick up the first down after man again, about seven that time, Prep brought both outside backers and then their inside backer slid to the outside. So that was actually good read by Cheney. Just couldn't get away.

But let's do the math. That's, that's seven touchdown. Let's call it six. Six or seven touchdowns for Gonzaga Prep so far. Not all of them on offense.

How many of these could have been avoided on Cheney's part? Well, the first one interception set up an 18 play drive. Yep. Second one, there was a fumble. Yep.

Third one, Cheney lost a 70 yard touchdown play and a holding penalty that would have made basically probably a 77 score instead of 21 or 14 and nothing. And then after that, they come back right before the first quarter is over with a 45 yard touchdown pass right as the quarter ended. So I would say realistically they probably handed 22 points easily the Gonzaga Prep and you could cut this game in half. Honestly, I think that's about right. So like we said during halftime and we'll say it again, yeah, this Cheney team on paper is going to get absolutely demolished and wiped out tonight by the time it's done.

Cheat is going to win some games this year. They only beat Rodgers. That was their one win last year. I think they can win some GSL games. Paul.

I agree. I like what I see. It's just, it's just not a great matchup against these guys. And there's our dude. That's really quick.

Let's see if he can get in some space. Yep, it's Cordell Lahr receiving the kick down at the 10 yard line, runs along the outside, gets to the 20, but man, he spun around about four guys to get there. Well, he ran a long way, but unfortunately ran from sideline to sideline. The good returners plant that foot and you head straight up the field because you got a much better chance of not getting crushed along those lines. Jacob Valance has made a lot of strides between last year and this year. Coming into this year, the coaches say he's being recruited by Whitworth and Pacific Lutheran on the west side. So he's got a college future, Paul, and I think that's great and I think he'll do really well at that level.

He's got a good army, he's got great recognition and look at this. First down, throws to the near side. He's got cordellar past the 30, past the 35, up to the 40. On the near side for their scat back. Lahr was one guy away from breaking that and going to the house.

And that's the kind of thing Cheney you can look forward to. You've got explosive people on the outside now. They don't care. Game's over. Now you can just go out the of play.

This is where Teeny gets better. This is where you start making your reads. This is where you start getting some. A little bit of success and you feel better about yourself. Don't worry about the score.

Throws over the middle and it's Camden Collins, his second catch of the night. He hauled it in across midfield, down to the opposing 45. That's that aiming orthodontics. First down and what they're doing, they're spreading this Gonzaga prep defense. He had two receivers, twins on one side, twins on the other, and ran double slants.

And he hit the inside receiver on the left side of the field. He was wide open first down. Good read. Great job by the quarterback to look off the safety because he looked right, came back left. That's a legitimate qb and that's a guy that will play at the next level.

Isn't it nice to hear those cheerleaders again. Paul Sorensen and having stuff. Sections and you know, that stuff. That's the part I love. And I think that's the thing that's encouraging.

We're getting back to high school again, Greg. You're getting back to activities. Bands out, the cheerleaders are out. You know, the football players, the families are out. You can.

He just flipped that ball out there and threw it 45 yards. He's got a legitimate arm and I like the way that he reads and reacts. He went to the right guy. He just needed to plant that foot, have a little bit better mechanic. And I think he would add a big completion.

That would have been 40, 45 plus maybe even a touchdown. Yeah. Second time on this drive. Laura almost ended up in the end zone, huh? Yeah.

No, and you see Cheney, they're getting confidence. You're down to a minute 30 here in the third quarter, you know, but. But they're doing a great job. They've got confidence. They're starting to play a little bit better on offense.

Third down and 10 for Cheney. Down 51 against G Prep, but looking to get in the end zone. Here comes Valance. Flag on the field. That's going to be holding.

Throws far down the left sideline. Over the head of coffin, but that one's coming back well. And I. I don't know if that was a delay of the game or what that was. That came down as he was rolling.

No, actually, I think. I don't think they're calling holding. I think they're calling a motion penalty. Oh, interesting. But I'm surprised they didn't blow that dead before the play started.

They blew it dead as the ball was in the air, which is strange. Well, maybe the. Maybe this p. The whistle thing got. I've done that in a basketball game.

I went to call a foul, I blew up my whistle. Nothing came out. Cats and dogs scurried underneath the bleachers, but there was no sound. So maybe he tried to blow his whistle and launched it or lost it or swallowed it. Who knows?

All right, after the loss of five on the penalty, third down and 15 for Cheney, and they're now back at around midfield. The ball's on the 50. They're going the wrong way. What do we talk about with penalties with Cheney? Please avoid those.

There's a I'm going to warn him about you. He's going to wear earmuffs and blinders. So he just stares straight ahead and doesn't look over at you. Sure. But he's also in good shape, so I don't think you want to make him Angry.

I'm not as in good shape as him and I'm not either. You know, I saw Deontay and Kendall yards the other night. I was like, man, that guy is, he's in better shape than me. Yeah, he is. He can still be play if you wanted to.

Here comes Jacob Valens, throws downfield quarterback for Cheney, throws into coverage. Intercepted. Intercepted yet again. That is Kerry Cage. Good for him.

Another turnover, third of the night on the pick, Paul. Yep. And that was just that ball is poorly, poorly thrown on the inside. Didn't give his receiver a chance. Great job by the corner.

Ran stride for stride. He actually had inside leverage on it and he looked like the receiver. He did a nice job of reading the flight of the ball high, pointing that thing. And most importantly, all defensive backs are not wide receivers that can't catch. He went up high, pointed the ball and caught it.

Nice job. First interception of the year for him. G Prep defense has been all over it tonight. But you know, it's funny considering no touchdowns, three picks. I still like Jacob Valance.

I do too. I do too. All right, here comes G Prep out on offense from their own 30 yard line after the interception. That is tough. Ryan back out there the backup QB again.

I'll be interested to see how he develops the last, the next couple of years, his career. He's only a sophomore and getting some playing time here on game one of his sophomore year. He pulls on the option gain of one. He'll play probably a lot of JV football. They really do a nice job.

You know, you look at the, you know, kind of the Catholic lead in sixth, seventh and eighth grade, you know, at All Saints and some of the different places they're playing eight man football, they're getting a good experience. And what do they run? They run the Gonzaga prep offense. So when they get as freshmen they've already had exposure to that. So we used to do with grid kids, I'll tell you.

And we had, we had a team up at Ferris, it was a half LC half Ferris team. And almost all the guys that were going to go to LC ended up going to Ferris. That team won six state in 2010 because they stayed together, they played the system and looked like he had a 15 yard penalty and they're going to move that down. And again this is where you try to get some composure. Got some frustration going on out there.

And that's the thing that's an advantage for prep is if you can stay in the system, you know exactly what you're getting. When you get here. Three minutes on the dots go in this one. Here comes G Prep's offense back out. Tough Ryan poles and hands it off along the near side up to the Cheney 40 yard line.

Nice little play on the carry that time was Aiden Patterson a sophomore. Yeah, I think. I think Aiden is now in for Tough. I think tough is toast. Yeah, Tough just went out.

Tough went out. So Aiden's in. He's five 8, 160 pound sophomore and he's getting a little playing time which is good. I like that. And you're down to 235 in the game.

And I think tough's back. The Tufters looks like maybe had a shoe issue or something. Yep. He pulls, gets down to the 30 yard line on the near side and picks up the name and orthodontics. First down pretty easily.

Almost a 20 yard run, 225 to go. Still 50. What is it? 58 nothing. Gonzaga Prep.

Man, if he keeps this up, I'm going to call him the toughest. He's going to go from tough to toughest at this, at this level. What if he scores a second touchdown here? It'll be even tougher. They run the option again.

Here comes the second snap along the far side. Ouch. Big hit. Down goes Henry Mudd. Gain of about 4 yards on the play as the clock continues to go.

Wow. Then we go into Great Gatsby, then the Crucible, then read that book. Read the Great Gatsby, which is good. Yeah. And then we do Old man in the Sea and then the Help.

And he wiped out a 70 yard touchdown pass. Yep. You know, I mean that would have been 147 right? There could have been 7 7. And Cheney also missed a field goal just barely.

Just kind of creeped around the the left up right there and that there's another field goal there. And we figured they probably gave prep with turnovers, bad special teams play and penalties about 23 points. So there's a lot of what a shoulda couldas. Doesn't matter. This game's over.

We also knew that Noah Holman, the sophomore would be a big face. They all scored a touchdown tonight, but Lilo Micheley had two. Yeah, and he really played well and I thought he had close to. He had a couple big runs in there primarily off the A gap and he did a great job. When they got close to the end zone.

His first run, touchdown run was a 13 yarder. That was a two play, 18 yard drive after the interception really set the tone for Gonzaga Prep. Then they came back lickety split about six minutes later he had a four yard touchdown run as well. And that bounced the score up to 14, 0. And then right after that is when Cheney threw the long 70 yard pass.

That got wiped out by the penalty. And that was as close as Cheney was going to get. Paul, now that you've seen G Prep this year, what do you think the premier matchup is going toward the end of the year? What game should we watch here that might tell us who. Who's number one and number two?

I thought Mead was going to be pretty good. I think Mouse Spokane is going to be okay. I'm not sure about me right now considering this is the only two teams I've, I've had a chance to see. I think Me G Prep is at Mead on September 23rd. I think Lewis and Clark is going to be improved.

Central Valley, they look like they're having some struggles, you know, over ridgeline. Only up 6 to nothing. So I don't know. I think it's kind of a question mark from a standpoint of I think it's Gonzaga prepping everybody else. Mead a comeback win in the fourth quarter on top of Eastmont 14 to 13.

Look at that. There go the Mead Panthers. There you go. You know what? We'll throw Mead in the mix now.

They came back. Got a W. Good job. I should note that I'm an English teacher at Mead High School. Just so we're very clear.
